World Online Premiere of The Beyond The Still Final Collaborative Film
This should be hitting the web at the exact same time we have the back-to-back premiere all 8 final chapters of the year-long Beyond The Still contest, live at the Sundance Film Festival .
Below you’ll find three movies. The first is a compilation of all 8 Chapters as one final piece. The second is the final and 8th Chapter (not preceded by the previous 7) that was written by all 6 of the chapter winners, starring Judd Nelson, that I directed alongside DP, Joe Desalvo.
And the third – a new behind the scenes video of the Chapter 8 shoot with all of the 6 winners on set.
This has been an incredibly exciting year – and working with the 6 chapter winners on Chapter eight was the highlight of the entire experience for me. Congratulations to them and to all of those who entered and/or followed what is being called the largest online collaborative film contest in history by Vimeo. Grey Advertising tells me that the project has made close to 200 million impressions over the past year.
A special thanks goes to the cast, crew, the winners, The Joneses, Crewcuts NYC, Company 3 LA, and to Canon and Vimeo for everything they did to make this happen!

Click below to see more behind the scenes images shot by Ryan Booth from his great blog post here. I recommend you check out his post as it’s the best one I’ve read that talks to the experience the 6 chapter winners went through during the final chapter’s shoot.
It’s my birthday today and I’m really excited to see this. It’s a great birthday present for me to watch this whole movie online.
Thanks for putting this all together. I really enjoyed the contest and all the BTS material you guys posted, even though I couldn’t participate in the contest.
I’m really looking forward to another contest like that some time soon.
All the best from Germany,
Sebastian
The same time as the Jets game? C’mon Vince.

You’re telling me!!!!! These things are planned months in advance…. I say Jets vs Greenbay at Super Bowl!
@Vincent Laforet, YES!
Oh…..Yea Right when the game comes on! But I’m gonna check it once the game is done or during halftime!!! Thanks Vince! GOoooooo JETS!!!
since childhood I liked the video cameras, I always wanted to do something like you, today I have 24 years and with the little money I have attempted to look like you, I’m still on your website, blog and twitter … very good job vincent , you are my biggest idol in the world of broadcasting.
Greetings from Pontevedra, Spain
I’ve been waiting for this! I really wish I could be at Sundance for the showing. Will you be documenting it’s showing by any chance?
Beautiful work, Vincent! You are so ridiculously talented (also confirmed by Ryan Booth). I’ve been following the contest all along so it was a real treat to finally be able to watch the final chapter. Thanks for inspiring us.
amazing, stunning and what an awesome inspiring piece made from Canon Cameras and of course very talented people and of course a few expensive cranes here and there haha 😉
well worth the wait, congrats to every one involved
It’s a fantastic work by so many people. I was wondering how it would be possible to combine the work of 7 different film makers into one final film. Somehow you guys managed. I would call it a “David-Lynch-style-I-have-to-see-it-at-least-three-times” film 🙂 Awesome.
Many Thanks …
Peter
It looks spectacular. Proud to be part of it. Congrats. And as a die hard Wisconsin-ite, bleed green and gold packer fan…at least you got one. Go Pack and again, well done
very interesting)))
It’s an amazing experiment… and a nice short. The collaborative force is quite remarkable.
What’s funny though, is that by the last chapter the production is pretty similar to a “regular” small film crew, except the dslr cameras.
Chapter eight has moved very far from the original Laforet short, which captured the imagination in big part, by the promise of not needing all the heavy industrial gears, including huge lights and long credit list.
Ironically, what has started up in the early chapters as a mean and lean skeleton operation, got most of the traditional “meat” by the end, as we can see in the behind the scene video.
At this point the role of dslr camera as a driving force, seems to be somewhat faded, as a stark reminder, that although the price of cinematic depth of field for he television or monitor screens may have dropped dramatically – most everything else of a film shoot has remained quite the same.
Or we just get used to way too fast for even miracles that take our breath away for the first time?
Wow, hundred of thousands worth of equipment at your disposal, and to top it all off a major hollywood actor. Don’t know what to make of it all. I will say this IS the site for all your DSLR fantasies.
Unbelievable 🙂 I mean the capabilities of the camera are great, but you still need a lot of equipment to go with it, which saddens me, coz I want to make movies like this 🙂
