Workshop – In Depth Still Photography Workflow & an introduction to Video for the Photographer
QUICK UPDATE: The Workshop is full at this time. Please send an e-mail to workshops@vincentlaforet.com with “NOTIFY ME” in the subject header – if you’d like to be notified when the DVD/Video/Online release of the workshop video becomes available.
I’ve been planning a photography workshop for a few months now – and have recently decided to include a section for photographers wishing to make the transition into video as well. The full-day workshop will be held at the Apple Boston Market Center, in Boston MA on Sunday November 2nd, 2008.
We will cover Apple’s Aperture software in depth – and I will share with you the workflow that I have adopted for both my commercial photography business – as well as the more deadline-driven editorial photography that I do out in the field.
Basically, I will show you how I run my business and the tools that I use every day.
I will show you how I manage my entire photography library within Aperture, as well as other tools from Apple and 3rd party software: ranging from Apple Remote Desktop, to special features in Leopard (such as Automator) to a number of utilities, plugins (Viveza), and delivery methods (Transmit) that I use on a daily basis not only to produce and prepare my images, but also how I run the business side of things (OmniFocus, Kerio Mail Server.) In short – I will share most of what I have learned over the past 3 years of running my own business (on the technology side) – after leaving my role as a staff photographer after close to a decade. This will comprise 2/3 of the day-long workshop.
The last third of the workshop will focus on the transition to video/film. I will bring the Canon 5D MKII that I used in the making of “Reverie” along with hardware from RedrockMicro and will discuss my transition into video and some of the initial challenges that I faced. This will NOT be a Final Cut Studio Tutorial however – we will look at some unique workflows especially adapted to the 5D MKII and output strategies via Compressor that will be relevant to all photographers/filmmakers interested in video/web/DVD delivery of the content they produce.
We will also be discussing FCP Studio’s Color software – I have had the opportunity to spend some time with an incredibly talented colorist Alex Bickel (who has shown me how to “treat” the moving image – very much in the same way still photographers are used to working on their master prints. You can see some of his work by going to this page and selecting the Euro RSCG Jaguar link.) We will discuss some of the hardware needs (such as reference monitors and video cards) needed by those who wish to perform professional level color grading – although again: this will not be an in depth color grading workshop by any means.
The idea of the second section (the last 1/3) is to INTRODUCE you to the concepts, tools and challenges of making the transition into video – a primer if you will. Not an in depth look into any particular software or techniques.

The seating is limited to 30 people and the cost of the workshop is $250.
Attendees are required to bring an Apple laptop with a copy of Aperture and iLife ’08 if they want to follow along with the tutorial.
Send an e-mail to workshops@vincentlaforet.com with:
You full name, e-mail (if different than the one your are sending from) and telephone number.
We will then contact you with further information on the final steps for you to register and payment details.
Optional: If you would like to include a link or two (no attachments please) to share with us your website/current work – those are of course welcome. The idea there is simply for me to get a quick snapshot idea of the level of photographer / videographer that will be attending so that I can better fine tune the curriculum to your needs.
For Those of You Who Cannot Attend:
We are looking into ways of recording this workshop – and how we can best broadcast that content to you at a future date. More to come on that at another time. If you are interested in being notified of when this becomes available – please send an e-mail to: workshops@vincentlaforet.com – with “NOTIFY ME” in the subject line.

You should note that this workshop is not being sponsored by any of the above manufacturers in any way (other than Apple donating the workshop space) so the last thing you should expect is a product pitch – I will be showing you what I use on a daily basis – and discussing each piece of the puzzle in detail – and their strengths and limitations.
Wow!! Why don’t I live on the other side of the pond?? This looks like such an inspiring event . I know I asked this question regarding your speech at the Apple Shop in NY but this would also be really interesting for us in Europe . I’m will get in contact with my local Apple office and beg, blackmail, etc to have them organise something like this.
Thanks for pushing the envelope even further!
Wilhelm

I completely concur. You really seem to have a rock-solid workflow, Vincent, as evidenced in the results, and I would love to see how you do things.
Boston is a bit far from New Zealand, though.
Video from the workshop would be really welcome. I would buy it asap 🙂
I would also be really thankful for presentations or even a video!
Greetings from Switzerland
Yes, a video version would be _very_ interesting. Seeing your workflow would be a big boost for some people saving a lot of time to fiddle out their way. Or at least it would be a good basis.
I have no problem paying for the video, too. Much cheaper than the flight to NYC and feeling like a criminal at the airport.
Video plz! We cannot all be there 🙁
Hello Vincent… THANKS for all your work and Updates I have been receiving.. Very Informative and Informational as always…
As I am in Saskatoon, SK, Canada I would appreciate any VIDEO updates that may come of this..
Stay well and thanks again for ALL your Hard Work and ART!! 😉
I’d pay $50 for a dvd! I just couldn’t justify a flight from MN though, plus lodging…
(college tuition + 5d mkII = not much left for air fare! 😉
Hi Vincent
Any workshop planned for Asia???
Your experience is far valuable than just limited to those in U.S.
Cheersss
Hi Vincent,
Witnessing the number of hits you received regarding the 5D MkII and Reverie you have a much larger audience that what the Apple Center in Boston will ever handle -lol. I’m sure you will soon figure a way to share this information with a much larger audience very soon. Thanks for your inspiration and willingness to share.
Best Regards,
Ron
What are the odds of you doing this kind of workshop or others in other areas around the country? Like Detroit, Chicago or any other areas in the mid-west. Or could you actually recommend other workshops that you have heard of covering the same kind of content by other photogs?

Damn! Romania is soooo far away! 🙁
When will you be notifying those that would like to attend?
I’m assuming that you’ve had more than 30 people that wish to attend. With the short timeframe to get travel booked I’d like to know ASAP to avoid booking a flight at last minute and paying the more expensive last minute fares.

Dan –
Just sent out notices. You are one of the attendees – not to worry. There are still a few spots open – so pls let me know if you’re interested. I’ve gotten a few hundred requests to “Notify Me” about the video/podcast/DVD or whatever we produce in the end from this event – so that too will happen. For those of you who are attending – see you in Boston. And for all of the others – I will indeed notify you when I have had a chance to catch up on cutting the material we produce that day at the workshop. And as far as trips to other parts of the US and the world – I’m totally open to that. I do think it’s SO much cheaper to produce downloadable content and/or DVDs for both you all and myself as well – getting a location and having everyone travel in is much more expensive of course. Yet of course – there is always something to be said about 1 on 1 time in “real” life…

QUICK UPDATE: 2 SPOTS JUST OPENED UP
The workshop was full – and two people had to drop out due to medical reasons (unfortunately) – so I have two new spots open – as of 10/23 – so pls write in if you are interested in filling one or both of those spots. The workshop is a go – see all of the attendees on Nov 2 in Boston!
ichat video conference your presentation??? please??? 😀
I’d be so tempted to take one of the free spots but I have Aperture only on my iMac, which is a but bulky to bring down from Toronto. Would you consider a trip up north? There’s a large photographers community up here, eh!
Please notify me too when your workshop is on the web or DVD.
Thanks,
Colin
Hoping you still have a spot. I live close by in Arlington and really want to be there for your presentation. I’m a “New England School of Photography” graduate, and a documentary photographer working with ongoing projects in Guatemala. Interested in moving into more video work with the new 5D.
Greetings-
Sunday Greetings Vincent-
I want to attend if you have room-please wait list me if you are full-I am just up the road in NH and will keep the date clear and can certainly make it on short notice
I spent a day with Rob Galbraith in Boston a a few years back when he did his “Just Show Me Tour”- it was invaluable- I am sure your session will prove to be the same- Thanks- Bill
Hi Vincent,
Just checking in once more. Do you have one more spot???
Thanks,: D
Chris Gagne
Vincent, PLEASE do this same seminar in New York. It’s exactly what I’m looking for.
Jim
Amazing. Simply amazing. Since it was Sunday, it was just like church… for the digitally depraved.
Much to process – thanks so much!
-j.
Very informative! Thanks, Vincent! Looking forward for the DVD! 🙂
Regards,
Jonas
Excellent workshop. I learned more about Aperture in the 8 hours of the workshop than I did in 3+ months of using it on my own.
-Aaron
Will you have a DVD or Online workshop for sale? That would be ideal.
