Tips and Tricks for the 5D MKII – Part I
This will be the first of many tech tip posts on the 5D MKII and video in general – specifically aimed at still photographers making the jump to video.
First – I got my 5D MKII production camera yesterday(yep I had to wait ’til yesterday to get mine…:) and I also received a battery pack. One small details that I didn’t know about (because I only use 1D EOS series cameras for the most part) is that you can use AA batteries in this pack – should you run out of the rechargeable ones… again – this is common with most of the Canon cameras outside of the 1D series – but many pros might not know this. And given that the Canon 5D MKII batteries are hard to come by – I thought I’d share this simple tip.
The second tip that I picked up is that the WIFI base to this camera will allow you to trigger the camera’s video on and off remotely (when you’re connecting (pairing) your computer to the camera via WIFI.) Most of your won’t care about this – but to others (ME) that’s a big deal. Currently – if you have LiveView enabled and the camera in video mode – if you plug a pocket wizard or other device into the camera and trigger it – it will trigger a still frame – NOT the video. And that’s a problem for some of the stuff I’m working on. I also hear that the Canon IR trigger will also do this (start and stop the video function)- the more expensive and newer one that is – the LC-5. UPDATE: THE LC-1 works as well.
That’s it for now. Time for some zzzzs.
Consider me (and a lot of other folks, I’m sure) extemely excited to see you writing up a series of 5D2 tips and tricks!!! I’ve been messing with mine all week, but there’s still some things that have me stumped and frustrated.
I especially can’t wait to hear your thoughts regarding quasi-manual control of the aperature using the production model. So far the best advice has been “use Nikon manual f-stop lenses with an adapter”. But as someone who only owns EOS glass (and not much, at that), that’s an expensive option.
Dear Vincent
it would be interesting to know how long the AA Batteries are lasting in comparism to the recharcheables. I remember reading that those AA run very fast on empty. Perhaps the expensive Lithium AAs could come closer to the recharcheables.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts

@Bernard,
I remember to try the AA pack when I had a 20D. It could do about 10 to 20 shots!
I have been following your adventures with the 5D2 religiously. I should have mine Monday.
Have your read about the “black pixel next to highlight” problem with the camera? They even use one of your stills from REVERIE to demonstrate the issue.

I hope this does not turn into another “1D Mark III fiasco” for Canon.

The AA’s don’t last long in the pack, but they’re great as an emergency backup. I usually have a handful in my bag for my flashes, so if my batteries don’t make the distance (hasn’t happened to me yet) I do have a backup.
Thanks for the info about remote triggering though; I hadn’t thought about that at all. I wonder if they’ll release something else that makes it easier to remote trigger the video mode?
I keep the AA battery pack and 6 Lithium batteries in my camera backpack for emergencies. The lithium batteries are supposed to run 7 times longer than alkalaine, and they also seem to have this magical self-recharge property too. When you use the lithiums in high-drain appliations (like a camera or flash), they tend to get very hot and loose their umph after a time. After they cool down, they seem to work like new again.
any chance you can take a look at the black dots problem ??? many blogs/forum are loaded with threads and post about the black dots appearing in high iso range… on video and stills… just google it up ( canon 5d black dots ) that would be really sad if this is a deffect in the hardware…hopefully just software issue. Thanks
From my experience with the original 5D, using AA’s with the grip is good for about one shoot.
Hello Vincent!
Have you tried also Eneloop from Sanyo?
They cost in Europe around 11-15 Euro (4 pieces).
Here an link from Geizhals -> http://geizhals.at/a294453.html
Why do you get your Canon EOS 5D Mark II yesterday (5.12.2008)?
In Austria the first photographers get it around 20th november 2008…
Has Canon no 5D Mark II for you? You have made one of the best movies, no, THE BEST MOVIE, with an DSLR since any DSLR can make videos (in Full HD). 🙂
Good luck with your own cam!
Please post further informations about your work with the new Canon!
Thx & Greetz from Austria (not Australia!). 🙂

Sometimes, it seems likeee VL believes all this independence talk himself. Come on, Mr Laforet. Wiith your budget, if I were independent, I’d buy a Red One with an EOS adapter to do serious work instead of wasting my time on this toy function of the 5D II.

@Rufus,
Hardly a toy considering the footage I’ve seen produced with it. …….I know Jannard would like to think of it as such.
I for one was wondering if you’d be able to connect to the 5Dmk2 via a pc. I wonder if you can do any other interesting things like remote fire stills and change exposure etc. Programming time lapse via a notebook could be useful.
Vincent, really enjoying your updates.I just can’t wait to actaully get my hands on one.
Dear Vincent!
Thank you for your informative commitment to this camera. Actually my main preocupation is aliasing. (besides the conversion of 30p to 24p but there is at least a workaround) I would be very grateful if you would give us a hint how to avoid this issue in the real world. (The best way I heard of is to keep the subject slightly out of focus – but I feel that that is not the best way to get rid of it)
Good stuff indeed. So, when should we expect the tip that makes this thing affordable? lol..
Oh i seriously want this camera so bad, it would be a huge step from my 400D. The price is kinda though for me though, would you recommend me to get an used 5d? Ive seen them for 250-300 dollars!
Feel free to visit my (its in swedish but got lots of pictures)
Dont use akalines in any camera or flash. The voltage drops too fast and there thrown out before most of the power is extracted. Good rechargeables last much longer than a single Canon battery. Lithium seems to last forever in camera and are the best backup one can have.
Anyone getting poor performance from six AA is using akalines or bad rechargables.
Vince do you know the zoom trick for setting shutter speed?
Hello,
I wonder if it isn’t possible to use two battery in the grip. For my very old 350d grip, I can put two battery and it allow me to do so much shoot.
Like everybody, I use the AA batery pach in case of in my bag.
Wonder to wait for your next advices.
Fred
Hi!
Quick tip for the lack of manual aperature: Take a look at the Singh-Ray Vario Duo adapter. Here you can blend between 2 to 8 fstops, and it even have a polariser filter “built in”. =)
best of all, it´s a intro price through 1 january!
http://www.singh-ray.com/varinduo.html
It´s a bit pricey, but i think it will do the job =)
I may be the only person who did this this quick. I sold my 5D Mark II. I prefer the heft and feel of the 1DsIII to that of the smaller camera.
The files on the 5D Mark II are very sweet. Video, well, it is video. I am a still shooter and if I need to shoot video, I’ll hire a DP.
Nice camera though.
On a green tip when it comes to AA batteries – check the usbcell (http://www.usbcell.com/) – rechargable AA batteries from a USB port. Been using them on a couple of my strobes – haven’t tried them on the 5D2 grip as yet.
Dear Vincent,
This is a great tips, I didn know about the AA batteries, I have using the old canon 5D for 2 years, and i cant wait to get mine, but it is not out in Paris yet, I shoot HDR photos with the canon 5D and sell big prints, but with the new resolution, I will get even bigger prints, you check out my work at : http://photoserge.com/portfolio/
Serge
I have some tips too.
Yesterday I was with the kids at the Barenaked Ladies concert in Toronto. I brought the camera in my messenger bag with a 17-40, a 200 2.8, one battery, and one 8gig Kingsmax 54 dollar card.
The video was amazing, all things considered. We were up in the gallery, way up, there were people moving all around, so i could only hand hold the camera, which is why there is quite a bit of shake in the footage. Focusing a 8 inch lens while holding onto the camera and tilting your head down I could see the screen was tough…with a tripod and a fluid head this footage would have been perfect.
What totally blew me away was the quality of sound from the little built in mic..honestly, it was pretty decent. Not for professional use, but for the majority of the people that are going to buy this camera, it’s pretty good. As is the video. Compression or not, 24p or 30p aside, it’s pretty damn amazing actually. So much so…that I only took about 20 still photos with the camera in one day..i’ve just been playing with the video!
Anyway, on to the “tip”. If you make your camera strap short enough so that when it’s around your neck your camera is out from your chest about 2 feet, you can hold the camera with one hand on either side while pulling away from your body, this creates tension in the strap and stabilizes the camera considerably. I’ll post some of the footage of the subway ride home later to show you..it’s quite good.
I recorded everything on the 640×480 setting just because I don’t want to get into dealing with huge files just quite yet, but I think at next weekends wedding I’ll be ready to do that.
Also, if you ARE planning to use this camera a lot for video or liveview..BUY BATTERIES!!! I went to the show at 1 and came home at 330 and the battery was drained to 30%.
I mentioned the Kingsmax card that I had. I purposely put a cheap 133X card that cost me around 50 dollars to see what effect that had on the video..so far, there have been no issues with the file transfer during recording or viewing. Of course, that was not with the HD size file so I’ll test that out soon too.
So, want to see the video footage of some of the concert? I also posted some stills that I grabbed while it was recording! That was the coolest…I can’t figure out how a shot at 5.6 at 640 came out so sharp but it did…
http://andreasphoto.blogspot.com/
PS. An usher came up to me only after he saw me moving the camera around while tracking the lighting of the show and he said “is that video, if so please stop”.
So I did at that point – and changed CF cards just incase 😉
I pre-ordered my 5D MKII the first weekend of October, and it arrived on Thursday evening at my local camera store (I like to buy local). The owner of the shop left a message on my cell phone indicating that it had arrived and was waiting for me to pick it up the following morning at my leisure. I went in Friday morning, and lo and behold! The salesperson from last night decided to sell the camera that I had already purchased to another customer. Pretty bummed out about that. But thanks for your tips. I’ve been following them closely, and feel free to keep them coming!
Hi Vincent,
Thanks to your post, I did some investigating in the eos5dmkii-im-en.pdf (5d Mark II PDF Manual)and discovered on page 125, the 3rd bullet under “Display and Operating the Camera”, you can trigger movie start and stop with the RC-1 Remote Controller. Since I owned the RC-1, I just tested it and it works on the 5D Mark II!
Hope this helps someone out there also.
-Will
I have been having fits trying to rid myself of a moire pattern which appears anytime I do video of lines against a contrasting background. Can be a single line, or something in a grid, makes no difference. It happens in almost half of everything I shoot. Here is an example (not by me but something on the internet which shows the problem clearly…
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aqM5QqqDqhw
Watch in HD and look behind the computer monitor right at the beginning to the covered windows.
If I turn sharpness down all the way, it helps but does not go away entirely and doing so degrades sharpness too much anyway.
Ideas?
I used a battery pack with AA with a 5D when I was in Congo, so fairly rough conditions. The performance of battery pack versus Canon batteries was very poor indeed, very short life, not recommended.
Vincent, you are a genius! I’ve been trying to work out how to do this (doesn’t help that my manual is in Chinese) Drop me a line.
Dan
Cool tips… glad to see you are getting into this video work more and more.
Don’t pay attention to those Red fanboys, they are just upset they have to wait another 9 months to get their equivalent.
Vincent –
Thanks for the tips here. Now if only Canon would go back to the add-on battery pack design of the 1n and 1v, where the grip seamlessly slid into the camera body and it looked (and felt) like a solid one piece system, instead of a disjointed add-on that looks so after-thoughtish.
I recently caught your PHOTOplus in NYC video/demo interview and really would appreciate any help from you. I’m purchasing the 5Dm2 in the next for weeks and I’m attempting to come back to an investor with a final amount. I want to include: Camera, an assortment of lens, footage storage and a similar mount like the one you’ve constructed. Could you post a ESSENTIAL list for the beginner like me and I’ll be forever grateful. BT
Anyone here actually have and use the WFT-E4A with the 5D2? Will it double as a vertical grip and make it unnecessary to own both?
I hope this works much better as my 5D MKI
@Parker, I fin
The $24 Canon RC-1 remote will also start and stop the video by setting the DRIVE to 2Sec Remote/Self Timer. Only thing is that it is direct line of sight, so you have to trigger from the front of the camera, or try to reach around front.
I think the Wireless transmitter also allows you to record video direct to a USB attached hard drive, or to the connected computer. Can anyone confirm that?
any news about 24P or 25P on 5d MKII?
Just echoing Paolo – any news on 24/25p? I hear there’s already a fund for someone to hack the firmware…
Да уж Достаточно спорно, поспорил бы с автором…
can do. Vincent Laforet’s blog is still a great resource, and he has some tips and tricks. Tips and tricks for the 5D MKII – Part 1 Tips and tricks for the 5D MKII – Part 2 Audio. He certainly seems to be getting a lot of work
Have a passion for very much of, can give you different feeling, not- ordinary enjoy.
