The RED CANON
Allow me to introduce the Big Kahuna.
I mentioned that I was working on a few prototypes/gadgets for this production with Jamie O’Brien – here is one of the first things that I can share.
The Red EOS Mount by Wicked Circuits was created by Andy Lesniak and Richard Wardlow. It allows you to control both Iris (Aperture) and focus control of any Canon EF Lens mounted to a RED One (Link to Wicked Circuits to come.) This will allow us to shoot 4K, 3K and 2K footage at up to 120 fps. The lens (w/ the crop factor) will be the equivalent of a 1280mm 5.6 and up (depending on the resolution we set.) Needless to say – I can’t wait to see what this looks like on the beach!
This “little guy” is supported by a RedRock Micro lens support system – also customed configured for this project (microLensSupport and the just released microOmniMount). The setup is remarkably stable and works perfectly so far.
The Red EOS Mount allows you to control the Aperture in 1/3 stop increments and also allows you to focus the lens with the rotating dial at 3 speeds (slow, normal and fast – through the switch to the right of the unit.) Push to go between the two modes – and a third time to lock down the settings. Very very slick.
A big thanks to RED, Canon, Wicked Circuits, and RedRock for their support in making this come together.
That’s impressive. How many people will be needed to man this setup? I assume you’ll have someone as your focus puller?
Oh man I TOTALLY need this setup (with Nikon lenses of course) for my next boat race!
Mark
You know, if you ever get tired of that setup, you could always mail it to me. I’ll pay the shipping fees. ;D
Maybe no one will notice it when you pull the unit out of your shirt pocket. What will we be zooming into at on the beach?
Awesome setup.
…and two guys to swivel the camera… I wonder what parents would say if I brought this to do a photo shoot of their baby.
Nice setup, but one thing is missing to complete the unit.

Pretty amazing!
Cannot wait to see the film. I mean digital captures. Whatever.
Oh Nice! Im so impressed. my favorite lenses on my Favorite Camera. I gotta get my hands on this!
Vince,
We’re all waiting for you to comment on the controversial “black dots” problem with the Canon 5D Mark II: http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1032&message=30308463
Please don’t keep us waiting.

@Simeon,
OK, I’ll bite.
What does a post about a Canon lense attached to a Red Camera sitting on a Manfrotto/Bogen tripod have to do with a Canon 5D Mark II and it’s teething problems?

@Simeon, Sure it can seem a bit off topic but i think it’s an important matter. I tried (in the 5DMkII audio thread)but i never got a reply.
As Vincent have promoted this camera heavily it would be nice to hear his thoughts.
Wow 1280 you can definitely cover some angles with that lens and get intamate shots of the surfer in action. Pipe breaks so close to the beach that sometimes a 600mm is to tight. But with the 1280 you can get crazy close and that will make for some interesting footage that your general audience will appreciate.

@Noah,
I’m curious to see and hear if the rolling shutter becomes apparent zoomed in this tight. I think the Red is supposed to be the fastest sensor and deal with the “jello shot” issue the best. I’m also very curious how the mark ii compares to the Red in this area. Not bagging on the tech as so many like to do, just curious about the limitations and how you are working around them Vincent. I suppose with nonlinear forms and a smooth consistent pan it would be hard to spot regardless.
OMG I need that lens! I am loving the 5D Mark II. Thanks VL for your inspiration!
Here is a sample clip right out of the box – of course, I couldn’t wait for batteries to fully charged so only go to shoot about 8 gigs worth of video. http://www.vimeo.com/2581629
Cheers!
To use an 800mm f5.6 allows you into a very different place, one that many others just do not understand nor see. I’ve used one for 20 years and loved it. Have a great time, and like the rest of the world, I look forward to seeing your results.
Nice,
can’t wait to get my Alesniak mount.
Wow! 🙂
I guess I am totally in the minority, but it really makes me a bit sick to my stomach and sad.

@christian, huh?
Very nice stuff, I’ve just been recently been reading this blog and find it very interesting since I work from a moving image aspect instead of photography.
Is Vincent going to op the camera for the shoot with a FF op, it’s the only way, right.
Very excited to see the outcome and hopefully I can get a scarlet and use it with some L lenses next year.
Good luck!
“This will allow us to shoot 4K, 3K and 2K footage at up to 120 fps.”
I’m confused…you can only shoot 120fps in 2K, am I missing something? Cool set up though!! I would love to pull focus on that, it would be quite the challenge, even with a decent f-stop!!

@Christopher Arata, I’m sure that Vincent meant it can shoot 4K, 3K, and [2K footage at up to 120fps]. Just a grouping miscommunication. Should be an incredible setup!
Now that is a mini bazooka! What are your thoughts on the RED’s handling?
No surprise here! That’s a nice rig for sports and nature. I own multiple RED One cameras, some of them for almost 16 months now, For almost a year now, for sports (surfing, etc.) and nature shooting, I’ve been using a Canon FD 150-600 f5.6L zoom, with a Century PL mount conversion on one of my RED Cameras. The 150-600 is about the same length as the new Canon 800, and weighs nearly the same – 9 lbs for the 150-600, and 9.9 pounds for the 800.
On one of my other RED One cameras I keep a Nikon mount. For sports and nature long lens work on that camera, I use a Nikon 400 f3.5 AIS (weight 5.5 pounds), and when I want 800mm from it, I use the Nikkor TC-301 2x. At a hair over 5.5 pounds that’s a very light lens setup to get 800mm.
RED’s 12/3 announcement for Epic and Scarlet included smart mounts in three kinds: RED, Nikon, and Canon. I fully expect to see a lot of the new RED electronic lenses, Canon EOS lenses, and Nikon lenses on Epic and Scarlet – not just long lenses like the Canon 800, but lenses of all focal lengths.
The new RED electronic lenses announced also feature optical image stabilization and auto-focus.
Welcome to the next incarnation of media convergence everyone! Very cool I’d say…
You can see a pic of me with my Canon 150-600 on the Redconnector link below.
If anyone is interested in teaming up to shoot long lens sports action (surfing, etc.) or wildlife, get in touch with me. I have an extensive background in those genres, plus adventure travel.
I field produced, directed, and shot coverage of the Pipe Masters last year with three of my RED One cameras.
Sorry for the long post. It is my first here. Cool blog…I’ll be back…
Happy Holidays!

Dear Vince,
Now I REALLY hate you.
-bret —> RED with envy
Now this is the truly end of the privacy. In the beach I mean. Awesome Vincent, just like the rest of the blog and work.
Yes! its wonderfull! i want this red camera!!!
wondering if the new red scarlet will have this as a mount either canon or nikon AF would be super nice. and where can i get one of these mounts now for my RED ONE>
This is insanely awesome, can’t wait to see not only the results but also the making-of reel.
I would like to mount EF lenses on my Sony EX3, any ideas on lens adapters to make this a possibility? We cant afford Red cameras so we are stuck to XD for now. Nice blog, will be back.
Congratulation M. Lafôret
What is the magnificient factor when you fit a still canon objectiv on a raid one ?
Is it 1.6 ?
What’s about the aperture ? How many do you loose ?
If Andy read this. When the Standard Smart Mount Controller will be available ? Is there any new information about the avibility ?
Many thanks for your work & technical inovations
Of course, what a great site and informative posts, I will add backlink. Regards.
