Help-Portrait
Here’s a fantastic project that Jeremy Cowart is starting up that leverages the power of social networking and of photography. Chase Jarvis linked to a post from Scott Kelby’s blog and I immediately signed up today.
It’s called help-portait.com – and I’d like you to consider being part of it on December 12th.
Jeremy is a graphic-designer who switched to photography full time in 2005 – and he’s done some pretty fantastic work during that period of time. I’m particularly impressed with the fact that he understands an often missed lesson that every photojournalist comes to understand at some point in their career: Photographs are often not about YOU – but about the people/places/events you photograph.
My favorite quote from Jeremy:
“We don’t want to see your photos… this isn’t about you, or me, or portfolios…or lighting… this is about GIVING pictures- not TAKING THEM… it’s about… connecting…sharing – and most of all sefving for the pure sake of serving – it’s about helping people see the beauty of who they are…”
If there are any sponsors perusing through this site – pls let me know if you’d like to help in this effort.
Looking forward to December 12th!
And to those who want to find a yet another way to give back through photography – here’s another group run by a friend (Michael Muller) that I am also happy to be a part of – a fantastic organization: Kids Clicking Kids – please check it out!
I’d love to help out. If I remember correctly you were moving to manhattan beach? If that’s the case we’re within a couple miles of each other. Let me know how I can help. Chuck

@Chuck espinoza, Does anyone want to help start a group (on Facebook / other) externally to start discussing this outside of the blog?
I signed up after seeing the video link on Chase’s blog. I’m trying to get something going down in San Diego via the local Strobist group, but if that doesn’t work out then I’ll make the drive to LA for whatever you plan to do (audio, video, or photo – can do all three).
Stuart, that was my original idea in SD, hit up the military families they would appreciate that I am sure. I am figuring what to do in my neck of the woods, I am thinking hitting up the soup kitchens or HUD housing.
yeah, thanks for sharing, we want to be a part of this too, signed up and following on twitter! photographers unite! we are in Hawaii
I’m game for whatever you have in mind in L.A.!
My calendar is marked! – I can round up all the local Manhattan/Hermosa photogs and vidiots! – I also have a battery powered Epson Photomate for on-the-spot 4×6’s – i can rig it up with solar panels and make it a GREEN DAY!

@Jim Toten, Perfect – hopefully someone can start an external group to discuss options (see first comment)
Hi Vincent,
I saw the original post on Scott Kelby’s website that just happened to correspond closely with the launch of our new website. We are in the Los Angeles area, and here it what we have so far: http://fadedandblurred.com/community/Thread-Help-Portrait If anyone is looking for something to do on 12/12, come by and check us out. We can use the help. If you know of another organization needing these services, we will have lot’s of photogs itching to help.
Thanks,
Frank
Carson and Stuart,
I’m in Carlsbad and willing to travel, so give me a shout and lets make it happen.
Thanks,
Dennis Hoover
I’m officially inspired. I just thought of a great idea!
