Unfortunately it has ZERO to do with that. It has to do with US laws and giving stuff away. We ran into this with the Vimeo / Canon Beyond The Still Contest – and it involved bonding etc in EVERY SINGLE US STATE! It’s a bit of a nightmare. It has nothing to do with CreativeLIVE’s or RedRock (nor mine) unwillingness to give stuff away overseas! We’d all LOVE to be able to do it. Unfortunately lawyers rule the roost in this country which is sad…
Blog, gear page, now your giving stuff away for letting us edit You!? The kindness never ends with you does it Vincent?

Redrock is giving away the gear and the work being edited was shot by students at the workshop
Oh no! Thats not fair! I have no chance for the price here in germany….

Americans have an obsession with lawyers and litigation / ridiculous!!! I’m sorry but nit my call nor anyone’s – this happens with ALL contests …
Great challenge, Vincent … gotta dig your RRM rig. Be great to see some gear associated with editing and sponsors become involved – we always need more hard drives & software! Good work …

How do you download the files from Vimeo? I’ve never downloaded files before.. Thanks!

Watch the video – it gives you step by step instructions.
@Vincent Laforet, Ok Thnaks Vincent! Mayby i come to the US and join the next contest! π
This is a great contest and i looking forward of the results!
1 Question pls… Should i use a 7D or a 5D Mark II?
I have a 7D but i donΒ΄t need 50p/60p and hope the look of the image is better on 5D Mark II…
Thanks!
Cheers Alex
I really like this idea but since I don’t have a Vimeo Plus account I can download only 5 clips a day. Is there another way go get access to the raw footage?
Cheers Stefano

I’ve spoken to CreativeLIVE and they are working on all of these issues. I’ll see what I can do to help on Monday through Vimeo. I wasn’t involved with setting this part up and I’m just getting up to speed… you all have time so you should be good in terms of deadline. We’re not ignoring you or your hurdles! But to be honest – you have 41 clips to download over close to 60 days if you don’t want to get a Plus account. I wasn’t involved in how this was set up – but it was set up by creativeLIVE and I very much doubt their intent was to “force” anyone to get a Plus account.
Is the script available anywhere?
Thanks.
@Robert Matichak, nevermind I just found it. Sorry.
@Vincent Laforet, Well getting a PLUS account isn’t that expensive. Their monthly fee is only $9 and their yearly fee is around $59

Kinda agree – but keep in mind there was no dark little plan behind this to force anyone to do it… This was the best solution Creative Live could find and ultimately decided on.
Hi Vincent
Re: “Only in US”, “forced to have a plus account”, “blah, blah, blah!”
You forgot to remember the old phrase “No good deed goes unpunished”.
Shame I’m in UK though π
Man, im curious….Im gonna participate but I read the terms and all that it`s so complicated! I read the part that says you need sufficient written documentation …I have no idea what that means all i know is the video im going to upload was edited with some sound stock and royalty free music a friend gave me like a year ago…and Im an american citizen but i have double nationality, also colombian….and right now im studying in colombia but if I ever were to win the prize…could it be mailed to my mother that lives in NY and she would eventually send it to me? I would sign what ever needs to be signed anyway.
@Vincent Laforet, try downloading the clips with realplayer…then convert the .flv files with a converter…I had to do this or else I wouldn`t have ever downloaded the videos
It’s a great idea but oh, how much more badly organized can it be! I can download 5 stems per day! The names of the downloaded videos are different than what they’re called on the site – so one has to constantly recheck that one actually downloads missing ones. How hard could it be to make a list of all videos/scenes and names to keep track of it. How hard can it be to create a page where one can download all of them at once….it goes on and on.
The organizers (?) knew very well that there’s a download limit! Why not say right out at the page instead of letting everyone of us find out the funky little secret after we’re getting the message that we’re not permitted to download!
Again, great idea, mediocre, confusing, terrible execution.
And, Vincent, kinda agreeing that a ‘pro’ account is ‘only’ 60 bucks a year – in other words implying that us wimps should pony up for crying out loud, is – do you agree – kinda lame ;-(
If anything this will give me an opportunity to get something done on a timely basis. If I get it done! LOLOL
Thank VLaf!
For being the great bringer-together-of-peoples-to-make-something-cool!!!
Dam its only U.S. π that rig sees so f. nice π dam laws. I could pay for the shipping if that changes.
Are the 41 videos all the footage being made available? The script shows there’s more story to the short film.
Also, are the entries being judged by how closely they hew to the original vision of the short film as seen in the script and storyboard?

All the details are listed in the post… you can do something original w/ the edit no problem.
Must we follow the script and storyboards, or are we allowed to use the footage to totally create an completely different story?

If u are a us resident I don’t see why not. CL is ultimately in charge… But I net u r good to go
Great idea for a contest, but a terrible way for people to get the assets. Vimeo simply isn’t a vehicle for delivering source assets. I am a plus member and even with that, I can only download 5 a day. On top of that, the file names do not match the titles of the clips that are posted which makes it confusing coming back day after day. Also when saving some of the files…all I get is the html pointer. I gave up!
If you are going to put your name on a contest, you should really be up to speed on what actually is happening. Making excuses doesn’t cut the mustard!

You know what – take a deep breath and get a hold of yourself. This is a contest that is being run by CL and I’m putting whatever pressure I can on them to do it the best way they can. And they’re doing everything they can on their end. Many other people have managed to download the files and submitted their edits. So I think it’s working. The only excuses I’m hearing that don’t cut the mustard seem to be yours at this point.
Copyright policy ?? -> Entries and other submitted material become the property of CL and will not be acknowledged or returned.
Hello, IΒ΄m from Spain, can I do the proyect??

Yes you can of course – but Creative Live is not allowed to give the prizes internationally unfotunately…. π
First I was really excited about this contest but then I read that I don’t have a chance to win. At least this is one more story I can tell when there is a discussion about ridiculous court cases in the US (we laugh a lot about some of your laws π ).
Hey Vincent,
Thanks for this wonderful opportunity. Regarding the deadline, is everyone required to submit their entries BEFORE August 12th, or is August 12th the last day for submission? If the latter, what time must we have our submissions in and how to differing time zones factor into the equation?
Thanks!
Steven

As a general rule – always enter 12-24 hours early to make sure you don’t hit any technical snags… I’ve seen a LOT of GEMS get disqualified because they were late…
one thing that is not clear to me is, if we can or cannot make more than one submissions. i mean, if i already submitted but wanna make a few more changes; can i withdraw back and upload new one or, shall i leave both uploaded or how?

Once you’ve submitted you should not submit a second entry as it could disqualify you. You should contact Creative Live directly with any questions – cheers – v
Just wanted to say THANKS Vincent! for this great experience in editing. Its hard to get hold of orginal footage to play with when you are just starting out, like me. Had so much fun and a sense of achievement when it was completed. Contest nearly over, 60 entries at time of posting! Have to say there are some really good edits in here. And good luck to everyone.
big thumbs up.
Paul.
How do you download the files from Vimeo? Iβve never downloaded files before.. very Thanks!

I’m pretty sure those files cannot be downloaded. If they are downloadable there would be a download link on the right of the page. Most of my videos are set to stream.
