A Few Spots Left in an upcoming 5D MKII Workshop in Atlanta
I will be speaking at a conference and leading a workshop in Atlanta on October 3rd and 4th respectively. (Go to the Canon Live Learning site here and select Atlanta as the city and pull down the menu to list my name if you are interested in learning more or to register.)
I’m sorry that I didn’t list this sooner – but the good news is that there are a few spots left as of this posting.
On Saturday you will get to meet three different Explorers (one of them being me) and get to hear us talk about our individual experiences with stills and video in what is a mini conference. Bruce Dorn and Adam Jones will be the other two speakers – they’re great! I will be showing both my still work and discuss my transition into video/film – including Reverie and the Jamie O’Brien “Fist Look” project which is still underway.
On Sunday I will lead around 16 students in an hands on demo of the Canon 5D MKII and it’s video performance. We will split up into two teams – shooting a very short “short” – with students given the chance to direct, DP, operate the cameras, do sound, lighting etc. We will discuss shooting a narrative video/film pieces and discuss how the 5D MKII fits into that type of production. Then we will get together and do it a second time with a second group (this gives everyone a chance to “play”) and edit the two pieces in Final Cut Studio. I will also give a quick intro into FCP’s Color software – to grade (or color correct) the footage.
This will be the third time I’m doing this workshop for Canon (we did one in NYC and another in LA) and I think it’s fair to say that students had a great time and learned quite a bit at both of the previous workshops.
You’ll get hands on experience with the RedRock Micro systems, Marshall Electronics and Ikan Monitors, Glidecam, LitePanel
and several other necessary gadgets.
The Saturday event is located at the Georgia World Congress Center – here (googlemaps link.) And Sunday’s event is at Studio Nine Hundred. UPDATE: Class is full sorry!
Just registered! Looking forward to a great workshop! Ill be bringing my Canon 7D as well. 🙂
I just got the e-mail, but was too late. Already sold out… 🙁
Visit Atlanta again soon. Best.

@Steven, Steven – we’re trying to set up a second workshop on October 6th – pls see the most recent post on my blog
Not too long ago, I attended a Canon seminar (here in Brunei) where Nat Geo assignment photographer Kris LeBoutillier (based out of Singapore) was invited to speak about his journeys and experience with the 5D MkII. At the seminar was a Red Rockrock Micro kit on demo. Not a keen video enthusiast myself anyone who likes the Redrock Micro can check out pictures of it with the 5DII and 70-200mm mounted:

Hey Vincent….
nice rig! We’re also building up one here. But we got some problems with the adapters/cables for the hdmi-output….maybe you can name some proper products (90°-hdmi-adapter in the picture) !?! 😉
We got problems with flickering picture as a result of bad hdmi-cables 🙁
thx lot….great job!
cheers

@Nils, I just found the 90º Adapter. I actually think that HDMI is one of the worst standards to do this with… hard to split – small connector that breaks – it’s very hit or miss! Splitting the signal is tough – I found a cheap splitter online for under $100

@Vincent Laforet, yes! First thx for replying 😉
I also use some splitting y-cable: HDMI typ C IN -> HDMI typ C OUT & DVI OUT . Unfortunately the 5DII reduces the output to 480p as it detects the DVI-Monitor 🙁
Yes! I’m just searching this “90° Adapter”…where did you get it?
Thx for your help…
What’s the optimal camera settings for video on the 5d mkII?

@Andreas, Set the sharpness down to low, and take the contrast and saturation down in PICTURE STYLES – that’s about all you can do. Everything else is pretty much set such as FPS.
Got the email but sold out. Need to do a second day…. pleeeaase!

@Andreas, Sorry you didn’t get in – pulling one of these off is tough – you have to get studio, models, etc. Not cheap… if You can find a studio that would donate their space, and enough people who are willing to do this and pay a reasonable fee – I can do something on the 6th… you’d need to find at least 7-10 people and that’s not easy! Pulling these things together is tough.

@Andreas, We’re trying to set up a second workshop for Oct – 6 – pls see latest post on this blog.
Hey Vince,
wanted to tell you again how much I enjoyed the workshop in June. It was so much fun even if you set us up to fail. I am the guy in the green T-Shirt with the glidecam 🙂
I was wondering if you have the final edited video we and the “pros” took. Wanted to show some of my students here in India what the final things ended up like.
Hope to be able to attend another class of yours some day. Keep up the amazing work.

@francois, No – I bought a cheap splitter… no need for power (as the good ones need power) – but it’s very very touchy.
