3 Day HDDSLR Workshop now available for download!
This past weekend something very special happened. As you may know, the crew at Creative Live, Chase Jarvis, and I engaged in a very interesting educational and social networking experiment.
Our goal was to stream a three day live workshop over the internet and gauge the response- and frankly to see if we could pull it off technically. By most measures, if not all, it was an incredible success as close to 100,000 (of which 48,000 were confirmed to be unique visitors) joined us from all over the globe.
I, for one, was amazed with the fact that people tuned in from the Himalayas, Australia, Asia, Europe and in between – often in the middle of the night due to the time zone difference. What struck me even more, was that many of the same people stayed tuned in for all three days!
I’d like to that all the viewers and the crew that worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make this experiment a success.
I wanted to announce that the resulting three days of raw footage has just been made available on the creativeLIVE site!
Here are some quotes from people who tuned in, as well as a few links below to reviews on the web:
playdorsey “Absolutely AWESOME 3 days, full of information, humor, surprises and high high energy. Bravo to Vince, creativeLIVE, and everyone who helped to make this happen. Groundbreaking model that breaks down barriers, borders and opens the doors to learning for all. Thank you to ALL!!!”
mib_uw776x “I have spent a lot more for so much less. Great Job. Look forward to future classes.”
michael_levin “i’m a video pro and this little discussion is giving me hope about the future”
ib_gqxv7q “Thanks all for a great weekend experience – high quality knowledge delivered for a large body of viewers. Impressive!”
Delfer_DK “I can honestly say, the advice given this weekend, will save me thousands and thousands of dollars in time saved, over the years to come. This workshop has been absolutely [exhilarating], and being a [photographer] in Denmark, I would NEVER have had the opportunity to sit through a masterclass like this, had it not been for creativeLIVE and crew! Thank you SO much!!”
Review 1 from thetechnofile excerpt below:
“Despite its ambitiousness, the event was a big success, attracting, on its first day, an audience of almost fifty thousand, from all over the world, many of whom (including myself) spent the whole weekend watching. If you missed it, you can purchase a download of the full three day event from the Creative Live website, something I would highly recommended doing.”
Review 2 from human two point x excerpt below:
“The content of the three-day course is challenging and extensive. My fellow classmates, literally thousandsfrom around the globe, are simultaneously captivated and engaged as the class is streamed live around the world. And everyone is participating, working together to not only ask the right questions but to answer them.
Take note! Expertise of this quickly evolving subject area is collectively assembling all around all of the instructors, assistants and learners as we all learn together.
Is this how we will all learn in the future (I mean, the present)?
Equally significant, the manner in which the class is delivered is as technologically advanced and sound as is the content of the course I’m taking. Simple, easy-to-use, expert instructor-led, live students working on set in a hands-on way — all meticulously planned, bundled, and served through powerfully organized and compelling media technology.
I’m even working hands-on with my trusty Canon 7D when my online instructor asks me to…”
Review 3 from “On The Road to Being a DP” excerpt below:
“When I first heard this was a free workshop I was a little skeptical. We have all seen free ‘training’ videos for production and although they may have some good information we realize why they are free. Well, anyone who didn’t see Vincent’s workshop needs to go ahead and buy it from CreativeLive (it was free when it was live). If you don’t have the money, sell something you don’t use on Craigslist or Ebay. Here is why…”

Wow, thanks Vincent. I’m glad you liked my review so much to post it on your blog. Can’t wait to re-watch your workshop

@Rob, Thanks very much Rob – we really appreciate the support! I know we’d all like to be able to do a bunch more of these – and we’ll be able to pull that off with your and others’ support.
Hi Vincent,
Thanks so much for your fabulous workshop with Creative Live. I stayed glued to my computer screen all weekend, at one point record braking 19 hours in a row, catching up with re-broadcast and live stream during the same day. Besides expert info on all areas needed shooting with HD DSLR, really enjoyed and learned a lot from your teaching style and methods.
Thanks for all your efforts and hard work! Hopefully we’ll be seeing many visually stunning but content oriented films in the future as a result of you sharing your knowledge with all of us.
You and Creative Live deserve all the positive feedback received!

@emoriya, 19 hours! Wow – it’s pretty amazing to see this type of thing happened – would never have believe it would be possible 5 years ago…
I was traveling during the workshop, so I was unable to watch the stream. I’m willing to pay for it, but it would be really helpful to be able to view a sample to get a feel for what it’s like, how it’s presented, etc. I don’t think giving a free sample of 5, 10 or even 30 minutes out of the whole thing would damage the value, and it would make the purchasing decision a lot easier for me (and surely others).

@Sean, We’re working on this.
Thanks Vincent, that was a great training weekend. I was there pretty the whole time. I picked up a lot of new stuff.

@Dave Dugdale, Thank you Dave!
Thanks Vincent for this incredible workshop! I’ve watched 90% live and also purchased the course. This is great stuff to re-watch again.
I’m only a little confused about the supposedly 100,000 people watching the event. I have a hard time imagining this because there were usually “only” between 1,500 – 2,500 people watching via UStream. But due to network problems many people had to reload the page/stream again and again or stopped and joined in later again. And maybe that 6-digit number represents how many times people have done that?
As much as I would like to promote your absolutely wonderful workshop I also wouldn’t want to see these unrealistic numbers being spread.

@arni, Yes – you’re correct. I’ve checked into it – and there were more than 100,000 total people who visited (I was told 50,000+ in the first day and people broadcast that.) The stats from USTREAM are actually delayed by a few days. Now that we have gotten the final stats, there were 48,000 confirmed unique visitors – I’ve gone ahead and put that important information up to clarify.
Hi Vincent, I purchased after watching for a day but like someone else said. It’s truly unbelievable that something this great was offered for free at any time. I think if people see a bit of the amazing material you offered the entire internet should be brought down by the amount of people downloading! At least that’s what should happen in my eyes! 😉 Thanks again. Had a great time watching and will look to the video’s as my inspiration and somewhat of a technical HDDSLR bible for some time!

@Tony Obfenda, GOOD LUCK!!!
Darn. Wish I knew about this while it was streaming for free. Sounds like a great resource. Too bad I’m a starving filmmaker ;-(
Vincent, this was an awesome broadcast.
I attended the workshop in Dubai and this is without doubt the perfect workshop companion as you have filled in the finer details that i know you wanted to include in our workshop but ran out of time… for $79 this has been the best workshop addon i could’ve asked for 🙂 – Thanks Alot to you and the Team!

@Khaled, Khaled – thank you! I’m happy you think so after spending a week with me in person!!! I appreciate it very much – v
I loved your workshop. It completely lived up to what I hoped for. I of course bought the course but I have one question…
If people look better and size more relatively (fist demo) in the 100-200mm range why are video prime lenses pretty much all in the 18-85mm range?
Thanks

@Jamie, What I was referring to are portraits of people – to clarify. The longer the lens – the more compressed and therefore flattering the image. And 18~85mm range is a perfect all purpose lens for filmmaking. Keep in mind that the majority of cameras have smaller sensors/film sizes in general – so the 85mm can easily exceed 135mm in terms of relative 35mm film size cameras.
Vincent,
I was glued to the screen for three days. Like many before me have said, it was magical, fantastically informational and worth many times what the downloads cost, but unbelievably was offered for FREE! You and CreativeLive deserve praise for your innovation and excellence. All I want to know is, when is the next one so I can plan to be in the audience.
Thanks very much.

@Stephen Anderson, Thank you Stephen! Means a lot. Chase and the creativeLIVE team deserver a LOT of praise for making this one happen.
Hey Vincent!
Firts of all – thank you for doing all this. I wasn’t able to watch the whole thing, because I live in Moscow, and the difference in time zones makes it very hard (you know – not to sleep for 3 days 🙂
But anyway I definitely want to purchase the whole course, even without any samples, but I’ve noticed that some parts of it are still missing (correct me if I’m wrong here). Those are the following:
Day 1 (Friday, April 30, 2010)
Bonus – Vincent Laforet + Chase Jarvis Chat
Day 2 (Saturday, May 1, 2010)
5 – The First Shoot!
Day 3 (Sunday, May 2, 2010)
4 – Post-Production & Thank-You’s (2:18:39)
My question is – if I buy the course now, will I be able to download this unavailable parts for free when they become available? Or should I wait until the whole course will be available to get the “complete experience”?

@Demetri, Demetri – Once you buy the course – you will get a login. This login will allow you to access all current AND future downloads. So as new / edited ones become available – you’ll be all set.
I am told that all of the videos are edited now – they are just processing them down and all should be up within the next few days – I appreciate your patience (there was a LOT of informaiton to crunch as we had up to 5 cameras and 12 mics going at once at some points.)
Hi there,
if I purchase the download of the course, do I download files or do I have to watch it on your website? And how often can I watch it? For a limited time?
Greetings from Germany
Johanna

@Johanna, Once you purchase – you will be given a login that will allow you to download all current and future videos (some are not up just yet.)
You will be able to download the videos and watch them as many times as you’d like for as long as you need them!
tried to catch it live but couldnt make it so will have to download it, thanks for sharing…
I had this event on my calendar for about a month before it happened. You and Chase are two of my favorite photographers and I couldn’t believe I was going to get a chance to learn from both of you. And learning VIDEO from you was probably be the #1 thing on my educational wish list. And then to top it all off, the price to buy 3 days worth of video was just fantastic! Couldn’t have asked for more. Thanks so much, and I can’t wait till the next one!

@Jim Powell, Jim – what would you want to see in the next one? We’re discussing some ideas… would love to get some feedback from everyone… v
Hi Vincent,
Thanks so much for the fantastic workshop! Some great and very practical advice for HDSLR filmmakers!
One question though — During the workshop, you mentioned that lenses with an ultra-sonic monitor were less than ideal for filmmaking. Could you explain? What do you recommend?
Thanks for a great workshop!
Best regards,
Michael
Hey Vincent
I attended all 3 days and it was AMAZING. I actually don’t have a HDSLR I use a Canon Hfs10 but the foundational knowledge provided by your workshop was absolutely amazing.
I will be buying the downloads from Creative live I also took so much notes I am in the process of re writing. Next workshop if possible would be great to break down some of the topics and do some deep dive for post work with editing software same way you explored story telling in capturing the frames would love to go further in that area. Workflow etc… I have been a fan of your work as a photographer for a while I started shooting film last year and did not even know that you were the same vincent laforet when i saw REVERIE. lol anyhow thank you so much for your generosity. You are an amazing instructor. I will attend many many many sessions with you HURRY FOR THE NEXT ONE!! 🙂

Vincent,
Thank you very much for posting this workshop online and for a reasonable fee. As an amateur this set of videos is likely the biggest tool that will help me get started shooting video with the Mark II which I have owned for almost 18 months.
Would it be possible to see the slides made available for those that have purchased the content.
I hope to see more content from you and others on creativelive.
Vincent,
Great job with the workshop on CreativeLIVE. Watched it from Ireland and learnt a lot about film making. I know two of my staff who watched it in it’s entirety too!

Vincent,
what is the model of the Really Right Stuff L-Plate and camera mount you referred to in the Day 1 Gear Video Part 2?
Awesome series BTW!
Thanks!
