Wow, very nice video; from a SLR none the less. I am concerned about the auto focus during video. Canon’s site implies there is, but your video seems to show otherwise. What are your thoughts??

It’s beautiful. And quite an accomplishment for 72 hours. Great work.

For those wondering why it looks like video, there are two reasons.

The first, as previously discussed, is that it’s at 30 fps.

But even more responsible for the video-like appearance is the shutter interval. Film usually has a shutter speed of 1/2 the frame duration, i.e. 1/48 second for 24 fps. Video, unencumbered by a physical shutter, often has a shutter speed equal to the frame rate. The most video-like sections of this short are those with 1/30th shutter speeds.

This issue plagues many 24 fps HD examples as well. Even at 24p, a “360 degree shutter” results in too-smooth motion with a video-like appearance.

I’m not trying to critique the piece at all, just hoping to preemptively answer the question of why some 30p samples look so filmic and some don’t.

In other words, 24p is only half of the filmmaker’s solution—the other hald being manila control, teh ability to enforce a 180 degree (1/48 at 24p) shutter speed.

The quality is impressive. Maybe you should get a commission on all the Canon 5D MkII’s that are going to be purchased because of this. I know I’m going to buy one! It would be fun to know what lenses were used for which frames. A person could guess some of them, but it would still be interesting none-the-less. Thanks so much for what you do.

@Daniel Garcia: yes, that would work, but it’s certainly not ideal… (Plus there are very few video cameras out there that can shoot 48fps)

Also, maybe it’s just my untrained eye, but I didn’t spot any rolling shutter problems. All the fast action, like running out of the apartment and grabbing the flowers, the wheels spinning then skidding to a halt.. all that stuff looked perfect to me.

Wow, amazing. I must say reading your blog posts have given an extra little boost to save my money and buy the mark II instead of trying to get a good deal on an old 5d

but I look at it this way: you (the consumer) are getting a pro grade video camera and a pro grade SLR for about $3000, thats a deal.
Its like; is the video part of the camera on par with a $1500 video camera?(uh duh) and is the 21 megapixel super SLR part of it worth $1500 as well? you bet!

I was excited about the video capabilities when the specs were officially released. Canon’s site got killed, but I waited for their anemic video examples (I knew it was something special just seeing the clips, but there were too many unanswered questions for me to jump on ordering it). That is, until I discovered this site and you’re first post about the film! I pre-ordered the 5d then, after reading your success, feeling the excitement about a tool to change independent filmmaking, and eagerly awaited this video!

My god, I am glad I pre-ordered then. This video just ensured a one year waiting list. Now I am just concerned (other than the economy) about how much I will have to pay to get a second body.

All I can say is wow. uterley amazing for someone with no film experience.

no, I’m a 5D pro shooter indeed. I have too much invested in L lenses to consider Nikon.

Look at it this way if you will : this 5D mkII has 9 points but only one is cross-type. You certainly know cross-types are the most responsive AF points. You may also know that the 1-year old 40D has 9 cross-type AF points.
I own both and the 40D can lock onto things much faster than the 5D when using peripheral points.

What good is a stunning 21MP image if it’s not in focus because you had to focus-and-recompose ? with the narrow DoF full frame can offer, do you really think focus-recompose is the best way to take a picture ?
And you’d also think a camera that can shoot clean ISO 6400 would be better equipped for low light work (in dark places, only cross-type AF sensors will allow reasonably paced candid shooting).

I’d be curious to hear Vincent’s thoughts on this (he surely uses cameras with more cross-type AF points and surely knows how it can help in getting a better photo)

The answer is yes—the result would be 24 fps video with each frame exposed at 1/48th. But that is surely breaking in through the back window when the front door really aught to be wide open!

Loved the crisp clean images. Nice job Vincent. But, that motion was just awful. The frame rate cadence at 30p just screams “video.” C’mon Canon, give us 24p.

So, this and that superfast Casio P&S makes the future of photojournalism, action and sports look like it’s going to be video, or at least 30FPS with still frame grabs. A little bit sad, I think.

Anyone notice the several consistent “hot pixels” in the scenes that appear to be shot in the higher ISOs. This could be edited out in post, in theory. Hot pixels will typically show up in the same spot when shooting many consecutive long exposures and can be healed or cloned in PS, though video would be slightly a different story- particularly in non-static scenes. Most cameras are not immune to this (my 1DS Mark III will exhibit this on occasion, temporarily).

Also, though not the end-all rolling shutter test, the fast motion of the rims on the SUV tires look promising.

but it seems the focus is fixed at all the scenes…does the AF work in movie mode? is it fast enough?
and…i expected less noise in movies with your excitments…it performed just like my small camcorder in the first scene with los f noise specially in the sky…

Opentracker helped them to reduce their Servers fourfold.

16 Servers with Hypertracker -> 6 Servers with Opentracker
100% CPU load -> 15-20% CPU load

And i doubt that you would reach more than 6500req/seq.

i would love to download a full resolution version so I could watch it on a Sony Bravia HD telly, the Canon site doesn’t do it justice, the resolution’s too low and it’s off centre!

That was absolutely unbelivable. AMAZING. Mind boggling, really. Fantastic. You know there are things that are being hyped a lot and don’t live up at all to that hype. Well this TOTALLY lived up to the hype AND exceeded my wildest expectations. WOW. Absolutely unbelivable. This is definitely ground breaking. I can’t really put into words how amazing this is and how excited I am about this whole project.

Very cool short film. This proves how capable a camera the 5dm2 is gonna be. Amazing lowlight footage!

Now we just need 24fps and shutter speed control. Canon, don’t let us down on something so simple to implement. This camera is about to make me make a full switch from Nikon.

Looks like Smugmug couldn’t handle the server load. I know they are trying to help, but it makes them look like an amatures when they don’t have a plan to handle large amounts of traffic.

Well done Vince, now it´s time for Canon to up the ante and offer a firmware that supports 24p 1/48th. Then this will be a true revolution and they would sell 3x as many cameras.

The protectionist stance on Canon will only make them loose sales in the long run, a hacker could probably do the 24p in the near future like the CHDK mods recently on the 40D.

The only thing is the motion looks like video. But then again, I guess that’s where RED comes in. Full Frame sensor with a few lenses, but Film-like motion!

Otherwise, Great production… Just limited by the camera i suppose… But that just makes me a film junkie.

Can you please tell me how well this camera handles image stabilization? I noticed your chopper scenes were quite smooth. Do you use a gyro or something to prevent camera shake? That is our biggest concern adopting this camera for our video production. Thanks!

Part II:

I notice several scenes in which exposure jumps are visible. The moon, aerial views, etc.

Were these just shots that were not exposure locked before rolling? Other images that seem to be susceptible to exposure jumps due to lighting changes appear to have avoided the issue.

We see this sort of thing in the default settings of the Nikon D90 HD mode, but that camera has other artifacts the 5DM2 appears to avoid.

Good low light quality for 1 light only.
Unbearable hyperreality TV/video feel due to 30 frames/sec. Will need transfer to 24fps and softening to pass as “film”. Bizzare “blue-box” like feeling of the women’s silhouetee/profile against the water. Needs serious color correction work. If the codec is 4:1:1 which is most likely at this acquisition speed (38 mbit/sec) it’ll not be easy if at all plausible.
Allover no big deal. Any pro video camera will be another league (higher). At higher price sticker of course.

There is no 24fps on that camera! I love the work in this video, but the greatest disappointment of my day was seeing Canon screw up yet again and not include a 24 frame per second shooting mode. (Takes me back to the days of the XL1.) Apparently it is limited to 30fps and that is just sad. I am hoping that they will release a firmware upgrade or something to fix this colossal oversight. Please, someone, please just tell me that everything I have researched and read about this camera is wrong and that it can shoot 24fps. I will buy the camera instantly if I am wrong!

I always wanted a Canon XH-A1 HDV camera, but was more into photography than video. The Canon 5D is a game changer.

i was keeping my fingers crossed that this short “film” would blow my socks off. well, it didn’t. Nothing against Vincent or his filmmaking chops, my comments are only on the camera. I am an experienced cinematographer and also a photo enthusiast (owner of HVX200 and D300 respectively) and lately i’ve also come to love the look of using my M2 adapter and Nikon lenses with the videocamera. But this setup is a very inconvenient to say the least. So when i heard the news last week I hoped the 5D video would look a lot better than the D90 -full frame DOF and that movie feel. I was wrong. The HD video is just that: “video”. The look and feel is far from cinematic. The 30p is the killer(so was the auto iris/exposure). Canon must get the 5D MII to shoot true 24p with full manual controls before any filmmaker (with drama in mind, not docs) will be serious about replacing his/her 24p HD videocamera regardless of the mega pixals.

Who knows. I will probably end of getting the 5D anyway and hope for a 24p firmware fix or go back “to the old” days of down converting in post with so-so software conversions…

… and I just can’t wait for Nikon to respond. (given that I have a stable of Nikon lenses) Video is where my heart is.

I think the reason the recording need to stop every 12 minutes or so is that the FAT32 file system won’t allow any documents exceed the 4Gb mark. So when the .MOV file hits this limit, the recording will have to stop and restart with a new file name.

It seems bizarre that a camera obviously suited towards hardcore documentary photographers would be tested and discussed and wildly praised as a device for shooting scripted corporate cheese. Definitely changes things – wish it was a better example.

Also can we get see the full res version?

The impression of bad hyperreality comes unfortunately from : 1) the usage of 30fps which in everybody’s mind (in NTSC land) is equal to unscripted/live television 2) progressive character of carrier, while television is 30fps over 60 interlaced fields. Drama was “always” shot with 24fps and whether we like it or not this frame rate is perceived as feature story telling method.(Europe is a bit different). For the experience to be new and revolutionary a different frame rate should be used, eg. IMAX is 60fps . 30fps progressive is excellent for corporate pep talk Big Brother movies though. Before Canon announces the details of the codec this corporate/wedding field might remain the only viable area for 5D2 filmmaking. If the codec samples chroma at 4:1:1 or 4:2:0 it is useless for any pro postproduction. With the bit rate of 38mbit/sec it is the most likely option , unfortunately.

Your purpose may not have been financially motivated, but certainly Canon will sell a lot of cameras because of this, and you have gotten a lot of publicity (= free advertising and future clients) from this video which clearly owes a lot to the choice of music (hence your reluctance to make it available sans music.) I’m not putting you or your work down, just saying Moby got taken advantage of here. I think this is one case of “Fair Use” being used unfairly.

Vincent, Very, very beautiful. Wonderfully made. I’m as excited as anyone about this new camera, but the one downfall I see (and it seems to be a REAL downfall) is that in your movie, and the only other video clip I’ve seen shot with this camera, Michael Reichman’s (at luminous-landscape.com), in neither one was the audio captured by the camera mike. This lends me to believe that we’re about to have a tremendous visual machine with a crappy microphone stuck to it. I’ve read that it does come with a jack in the side of the camera, but that it’s on the cheapo side, no for any “real” type of microphone. This is just an early comment……and I sure hope I’m wrong!

Canon should just use your video for TV ad.

Regarding audio: Nowadays you can get great, inexpensive stand-alone audio recorders, so no biggie that this camera doesn’t come with XLR jacks and audio pots. If it did, the surface real estate requirements would compromise its function as a still camera, so I think the compromise made was a good one, although I guess you could imagine a plug in screw on module sort of like a vertical grip with all the jacks and pots. Still it would mess with the mobility of the camera to tie it down with wires and such.

what was the sequence setting for editing?

The photos are very good, but there are a fair number of “hot” pixels in each photo – sample gallery. You can see those red or white pixels in almost every photo. I’m sure the final production models will be much cleaner.

This is TRUE 35mm sensor territory! Below $3,000. I suspect Canon themselves are not yet fully aware of what they have just unleashed and the potential it carries for even more. 24/25p, true uncompressed RAW capture, 2K/4K resolution (after all, this sensor has 21 million photisites, doesn’t it)… Oh gosh, I guess I’m falling in a REVERIE.

That was amazing. The gap between still and video are getting closer and closer.

I’m not trolling .. but I don’t see what all the fuss is about. I haven’t seen the movie because it’s not available due to bandwith issues.

Does this camera have a microphone? Does it have an external mic jack? Does it have a heaphonoe jack? Does it have a limitation on the amount of time recorded? (other than the size of the memory card this is) What is the battery life while recording video?

Those are just a few questions I came up with without thinking too hard.

Geez I wish people would stop saying “Full HD” and/or 1080 without telling us about frame rates or interlacing. 1080p@30fps – if that’s what it did – is *half* the rate of “Full HD”…

Really enjoyed your video shot with the canon 5D MKII. Looks great. I just to do some photography, but at the moment more into Digital filmmaking. Very low budget. To keep a nice DOF and perspective, I always shoot with the help of the P+S mini35 and 35mm Zeiss filmlenses. In Brasil, “Show de Bola” is now in the cinemas.
But the DOF with the 5D MKII is even nicer. Hope canon will stick that CMOS chip etc in a Canon XL like body.
I do have a question though. Is there any kind of TIMECODE, shootng with the 5D MKII??
I’m shure you will have a billion emails, so it might take a while before you get to my mail.
Hope it will be before the end of the year.
Have to shoot a feature movie in Spain soon. Really start thinking to do it with the 5D MKII. These new Zeiss ZE lenses look very nice to use for film as well.

i’ve saw other demo video on other sites like dpreview or luminous-landscapes and they are really crap. They simply doesn’t show the possible applications of the new 5d in pro video issues and what does it means for the evolution of the sector (redone camera seem old stuff now expecially for high iso performance, cropped sensor size and prices).

Just out of curiosity, what happens when you hit the 4GB limit (or duration of 12min or so)? Does it automatically start a new clip? Is there a deplay? and if so, how long is it? Or does it wait for you to start a new clip manually?

Hi Vincent, I was just wondering what type of gyro you used to stabalize the camera when you did the helicopter scenes? What the 5D teathered to a laptop so you could frame the shots or did you somehow look through the viewfinder?

It’s ok. It feels more like a commercial for perfume than art, but it does show that still photographers can dispense with video cameras and use the camera form that they are familiar with to create moving images from this point on.

Does anyone know if the contradiction between the claims of Chuck Westfall of Canon and Vincent have been resolved? Canon’s Chuck Westfall claims that there is ZERO direct control over any specific exposure settings, including aperture. But Vincent says the camera he used allowed him to set the aperture or shutter speed.

Vincent:

“you can shoot in Aperture priority – you set the Aperture and the camera chooses between 1/125th of a second or 1/60th of a second – and then it’s main control is the ISO

“you can shoot in shutter priority mode- set the shutter speed ( I think only 1′/60th and 1/125th of a second would be option here) and the camera sets the aperture and ISO for you…”

Chuck Westfall, Canon:

“Since the EOS 5D Mark II controls ISO, shutter speed and aperture value automatically in movie mode, there is no direct user control over these settings. The best way to force a wide aperture is to shoot in low light or with an ND filter. The best way to force a low ISO is to shoot in bright light. It’s not realistic to expect that you’ll be able to force the combination of wide aperture and low ISO at the same time in movie mode with the 5D Mark II. There is no ‘program shift’ in movie mode with the 5D Mark II to adjust the settings the camera picks. However, it is definitely possible to apply exposure compensation and AE lock in movie mode to override the camera’s automatic adjustments to a reasonable extent.”

Also, Canon:

“The following settings are made automatically by the camera and cannot be adjusted by the user:

ISO speed
Shutter speed (from 1/30 to 1/125)
Aperture (varies according to lens; no arbitrary restrictions)”

If Vincent is correct, there is a path to get f/1.4, shutter 1/60, and ISO 100 for a daylight close-up, for example. A very typical shot — a CU with b.g. blur. But if Westfall is correct, you’ll never get that shot. The iris will likely not open up wide until the ISO has gone into noise territory.

There’s a mile of difference between directly controlling one variable and directly controlling none. It’s huge.

Westfall says none. Vincent says one.

Which is it?

From what I’ve been able to figure, the 5d II cannot lock down the exposure. It will shift if you pan from a bright scene to a dark scene. Am I wrong?

Having worked as both a filmmaker and now as a photographer, I definitely stumbled, technically, when I first started shooting weddings with flash, although it helped that I’m friendly, connect well with people, and have no problems bossing people around. I was used to working in a way every shot is planned, logged, and lit with studio lights ahead of time, where there was the time to make adjustments. I would say that if you’re going to shoot weddings, it actually takes a lot more expertise than Elizabeth mentions (at least to be really good, and to make a living at it). It’s very fast, high-pressure, and you have to really be great with choosing your settings/lenses/accessories on the fly. You’ve also got to be a nice person, with good social skills, great manners, and ability to really connect with people – as well as being able to attend weddings over & over again without getting cynical.

I have made my way around this blog and I myst say that I am quite impressed with the work. Great work Vincent!!
