Awesomeee!
wow. that makes me excited about video.. nice work Vincent. It is great to see this camera in you hands as it has obviously sparked a fire of creativity in you.. we creative professionals need that and i hope this camera does the same for me
Thanks, can’t wait for the download to finish!
Stunning. Vincent, this entire thread is an inspiration. Your excitement is contagious. Thanks for paying it forward, it’s working…
Thank you, I’ve been waiting for this all weekend!
It’s nice to feel welcome as a Canon shooter again (after a few months of Nikon induced angst).
amazing!
Wow, very nice video; from a SLR none the less. I am concerned about the auto focus during video. Canon’s site implies there is, but your video seems to show otherwise. What are your thoughts??
Autofocus
* Quick Mode
* Live Mode
* Live View Face Detection Mode
* Manual
Thanks for taking the time, this is an awesome showcasing of the 5D!

wow! thanks!

WOW! I’m glad I pre-ordered mine today before this video came out…
that was awesome.
especially for the conditions you stated.
72 hours with a piece of equipment, no prior “training”, no manual, first time doing a video shoot, and a limited budget.
simply
amazing.
I’m drooling just looking at that screen capture from the helicopter… Waiting for the video to load!!!!
=Matt=
@Scott:
SmugMug is ready and willing to host 720p and 1080p versions of the video. As I understand it, Canon wanted to do it, though, so we’re waiting in the wings.
I have no idea why Canon wouldn’t show off the full 1080p glory of this fabulous footage on their new game-changer, though. Seems strange… ?
It’s beautiful. And quite an accomplishment for 72 hours. Great work.
For those wondering why it looks like video, there are two reasons.
The first, as previously discussed, is that it’s at 30 fps.
But even more responsible for the video-like appearance is the shutter interval. Film usually has a shutter speed of 1/2 the frame duration, i.e. 1/48 second for 24 fps. Video, unencumbered by a physical shutter, often has a shutter speed equal to the frame rate. The most video-like sections of this short are those with 1/30th shutter speeds.
This issue plagues many 24 fps HD examples as well. Even at 24p, a “360 degree shutter” results in too-smooth motion with a video-like appearance.
I’m not trying to critique the piece at all, just hoping to preemptively answer the question of why some 30p samples look so filmic and some don’t.
In other words, 24p is only half of the filmmaker’s solution—the other hald being manila control, teh ability to enforce a 180 degree (1/48 at 24p) shutter speed.
That was incredible! I could never belive an SLR could provide video of THAT quality! Props to you!
Bravo!
Canon… Smugmug… And YOU Vincent… Are my heroes 🙂
Wow….goosebumps, Vincent. Amazing! I can’t wait to get my hands on this camera!
Damn – I can’t wait to get my hands on one of these to play with. I haven’t had an overwhelming interest in video in the past – but a large part of that was not wanting to invest in another set of hardware. Now, though? I can’t wait!
Absolutely astounding work, Vincent, thanks for sharing this and getting this whole thing going. I suspect this is going to be a big deal..
-c
Stunning. Truly beautiful!
Amazing work!! Great job Vincent and what a camera. I am so jacked about what I just saw I cant believe it..You were right on when you said everything will change.. Thanks for extra effort in putting this together..
Vincent – a question:
During the helicopter scene when you panned down on one of the tall buildings, it looked like the camera irised down…was that something that was automatic? Done manually? In post? Or is there an exposure setting lock in video mode?
sensationell, das video isch eifach hammer !!!
Awesome work, Vincent – nothing short of breath-taking for such a minimum amount of time. Thank you for taking the time to put together such a fine example of the potential of the 5DII.
Your efforts are appreciated.
Stu – could you, in theory, replicate the “180 degree shutter” by shooting at say 48 or 60fps, and then cutting out every other frame? (I know you can’t with this camera, i’m just asking hypothetically)
Great! Absolutely great. This IS a revolution.
I love the way you use your TS lenses. Great color.
Great quality. You could paint out the seat belt
in the helicopter shot though 😉
Simply amazing! And the fact that a photographer as busy as you spends the better part of this last week working on this “project”, getting it out there for all to see, is also amazing. THANK YOU FOR ALL THIS HARD WORK!
All I can say is that I’ve practically made your blog my homepage. I’ve refreshed its sooo many times waiting to see this video. You’re work is so inspiring! Thank you.
This was absolutely outstanding work. The team here at GearPatrol.com commends you for the work you did. Seriously awesome… inspiring.
Damn. This just means they’re going to be back-ordered forever. 🙂
I would like to see if something like Coldplay’s Yellow video could be done with this camera. Extreme low light, one take.
amazing. exciting…. i have goose pimples all over.. i am sitting writing a script and ideas b/c i am inspired to make my own. thank you!!
I simply can’t get over this video. Kudos!! Can’t wait to get my hands on one!!
(._.)
I can’t stop watching it (I’ll save it locally to save the bandwidth).
Great job on the video!
The quality is impressive. Maybe you should get a commission on all the Canon 5D MkII’s that are going to be purchased because of this. I know I’m going to buy one! It would be fun to know what lenses were used for which frames. A person could guess some of them, but it would still be interesting none-the-less. Thanks so much for what you do.
OMG and other such acronyms!
Damn, I just wet my pants!
Which frames were shot with the TS-E 24mm f/3.5L
TS-E 45mm f/2.8? Simply amazing.
@Daniel Garcia: yes, that would work, but it’s certainly not ideal… (Plus there are very few video cameras out there that can shoot 48fps)
Wow… just wow… (Love the Moby – Extreme Ways at the end)
Look at that image quality!!!! Very well filmed, good job!
Thanks for sharing Vince, I was particularly excited to see the aerial footage. How did the camera behave for aerial work in your opinion. Were you shooting with a gyro handheld?
Nice Job!
Simply incredible for an SLR! As you said this is a total game changer. I already found a use for having both still and video capabilities in one unit for our photographers where I work. They already use the 5D. The quality of the video will help combine two services with using only one person as opposed to using a small crew. Definitely time to upgrade.
Looks great, I can’t wait to see the making-of video and see how it all came together and scope out what was used where!
Freaking fantastic! Thanks!
Holy Crap. That was astonishing! Seriously, Holy Crap. I just keep saying it. Wow, wonderful video.
ok i’m buying one now. Excellent work
Also, maybe it’s just my untrained eye, but I didn’t spot any rolling shutter problems. All the fast action, like running out of the apartment and grabbing the flowers, the wheels spinning then skidding to a halt.. all that stuff looked perfect to me.
Amazing (yet pricey) result, given such a short period.
Now I understand why Canon didn’t bother improving the aging AF system of the 5D : this mkII is for filming, not photographing (what was I thinking?).
Stunning. Kudos Vincent, Canon and everyone involved.
As Stu said, if Canon can add a 24p mode and a shutter speed control (or a fixed 180 degree shutter) we could have a full film look!
I’m still drooling… 🙂
Great work! I can’t wait to see the behind the scenes footage!
Graduation Stoles
Wow, amazing. I must say reading your blog posts have given an extra little boost to save my money and buy the mark II instead of trying to get a good deal on an old 5d
but I look at it this way: you (the consumer) are getting a pro grade video camera and a pro grade SLR for about $3000, thats a deal.
Its like; is the video part of the camera on par with a $1500 video camera?(uh duh) and is the 21 megapixel super SLR part of it worth $1500 as well? you bet!
Thanks so much for sharing this with us
-N8
@Don, indeed it’s very strange that Canon would offer the 1080p version to amaze all. I mean even this version was amazing, but I can’t wait to hopefully, eventually be able to enjoy the 1080p version on my 24″ monitor: beauty. I even tried multiple other URIs for the m4v file to see if it was on Canon’s servers but couldn’t find anything…
I hope to see the behind-the-scenes video soon!
something this good.. from a dslr.. wow.. great job putting this together.. you guys are awesome..
@ Paul
In the grand scheme of things, I’m wondering how this is “pricey”.
Very cool! 🙂 Great job Vincent!!
So the girl in this movie was Alex(andria?) Rush?
I hope you and others will indeed make more soon.
Pretty sweet! Thank you for all the hard work!
With all due apologies – we are just as exciting as you all seem to be… and it’s time for a BEER..
Have literally not slept for more than 3-4 hours per night for close 10 days…time to celebrate and get some sleep… I’ll be in touch tomorrow….
Afternoon 😉
The Behind The scenes video will be up in 1 hour or so… so if you’re up and excited… so are we… more TK soon!
incredible… with this, plus other develop tools, huge role in video game development possible.
Btw, if this was downsized to 1/4 resolution, I’d love to see the original version! This is the best I’ve seen since the Red Camera for digital.
> Amazing (yet pricey) result, given such a short period.

Nikon always sends one person to poop in the punch bowl, don’t they?
The camera is not at all pricey given its feature set. And its AF system is just fine. It may not have one zillion focus points like some cameras, but how many are really needed? 9 is perfectly fine and the image quality is going to blow everything else away. It is still a dSLR for photography; video is just an added bonus.
Vincent,
I’ve been a huge fan of your work – especially since the Beijing Olympics. I followed your blog posts every day. Thank you so much for sharing this. I’ll be one of the first people in Seattle to be getting this camera – I placed my deposit for it at the pro store and more than likely will be receiving the camera from the first shipment. I’ve already got ideas lined up for what I am going to be doing with mine. And I’m just a simple photo geek who’s still honing his craft.
Stunning… It will be neat to see the evolution of photography as we know it…!!!!
Super fantastic work Vincent.
Epic.
Unbelievable work.
I am looking forward to more videos like this.
there is a visible noise in the sky during the last chopper scene
Vincent,
Thank you for your efforts. The results your have achieved with this new and exciting product makes my job worth while. Your artistic genius is very well appreciated.
DS
Wow, gorgeous short film! I always have video has a red-headed side hobby, but I’ve never had my own camcorder. This combo looks incredible! I hope I can pre-order soon, I don’t want to wait any longer than necessary.
Mindblowingly awesome. This is exciting stuff! I can’t wait to see the behind the scenes vid.
Absolutely beautiful, Vincent… thanks for all of your work in getting this out to the public.
Looking forward to getting one of these in my camera bag.
Absolutely unreal! I was skeptical of the video quality ie a gimmick included just because a certain other brand has video, but now… wow! My sense of value/dollar for the 5D II is shifting for the better!
Vincent,
Thank you for showing what is possible with the latest technology. I hope for the best in your new window of opportunity.
Vincent, absolutely INCREDIBLE! each frame is simply stunning. Wow!
Congrats on your first short film!
-Talya
I was excited about the video capabilities when the specs were officially released. Canon’s site got killed, but I waited for their anemic video examples (I knew it was something special just seeing the clips, but there were too many unanswered questions for me to jump on ordering it). That is, until I discovered this site and you’re first post about the film! I pre-ordered the 5d then, after reading your success, feeling the excitement about a tool to change independent filmmaking, and eagerly awaited this video!
My god, I am glad I pre-ordered then. This video just ensured a one year waiting list. Now I am just concerned (other than the economy) about how much I will have to pay to get a second body.
Well done and thank you.
Wow, that is ridiculous. I am sitting here in awe, and can’t believe that I even just viewed that video. I sit at home watching 1080p TV, and shoot with a 12MP SLR, and still can’t even get my mind around the concepts that you just threw at me. Great work, and thank you for sharing.
-DPollitt
This video is a real slap on the face of those who say video is worthless in a DSLR.
Really nice video.
Simply Stunning! So glad you got the opportunity to make this happen. This is 1000x better then the samples on the Canon Japan site. Love to see more.
Very nice photography&editing, I would like to see original footage to check detail on shadows and enjoy the production on full size.
btw if its posible Vincent… some lines about WB setup would be nice too 🙂
this “camera” makes me going nuts.
Absolutely gorgeous production, you make us fellow Canon users proud!
Astonishing quality from a DSLR. This is indeed going to change the way our industry will function. Nice work =)
That was an amazing piece of work. Many thanks for all your work on this. Initially I thought the video on this camera was just a gimmick. I’m so happy I was wrong. Now I’m waiting for the next one:-)
Enjoy that well-deserved beer Vincent. I hope it’s OK that I used your image (with attribution and link) on ProLost:
http://prolost.blogspot.com/2008/09/reverie.html
Hi Vince. Can you convert/resample this video to 24 fps and post that as well so that people stop talking nonsense?
I really don’t know which I more impressed by, your ability to put together a brilliant piece like that in 72 hours or the camera that it was shot on. I think you have a future in Cinematography.
Fantastic work, Vincent. I love your translation of your own style with stills to the world of video. It will be a very interesting time for creativity and exploration for photographers when they have this tool in hand. With the right tool in hand, you have quickly (and cheaply) made something magical. Congrats!
where can i pre order one of these?
Vincent- you’re energy and enthusiasm is both infectious and entertaining. Thanks for letting us see what the 5dII can do.
I’m primarily a still photographer but saw a need to add some other skills to the skillset and started working with video about two years ago – I’m sure you’re well aware of the variety of hats photographers can wear in the business now and in fact, I did the final color grading work on the most recent five episodes of the Discovery HD series “Sunrise Earth” and was curious if you even sent your project to Color let alone did any color correcting on these files.
Thanks again-
All I can say is wow. uterley amazing for someone with no film experience.
Any chnace you’ll put the full 1080p footage online somewhere so we can really see the quality.
WOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWZA! That blew my freakin’ socks off!!!!!!!!!!
I am totally blown away at the video you put together. The video quality was fantastic and the cinematography was absolutely gorgeous! I’ve never done any video, but it seems that it opens up a whole ‘nother world beyond still photography!
Thank you Canon for hosting this!!
Yowza! Thanks Vincent! I’ve been in serious need of a creative in the photo butt and I think this is just the thing.
Nice work and kudos for your unbridled enthusiasm.
Cheers!
> Nikon always sends one person to poop in the punch bowl, don’t they?
no, I’m a 5D pro shooter indeed. I have too much invested in L lenses to consider Nikon.
> The camera is not at all pricey given its feature set.
Ahem… I was talking about the $5000 budget for production of the movie.
> but how many are really needed? 9 is perfectly fine
Look at it this way if you will : this 5D mkII has 9 points but only one is cross-type. You certainly know cross-types are the most responsive AF points. You may also know that the 1-year old 40D has 9 cross-type AF points.
I own both and the 40D can lock onto things much faster than the 5D when using peripheral points.
What good is a stunning 21MP image if it’s not in focus because you had to focus-and-recompose ? with the narrow DoF full frame can offer, do you really think focus-recompose is the best way to take a picture ?
And you’d also think a camera that can shoot clean ISO 6400 would be better equipped for low light work (in dark places, only cross-type AF sensors will allow reasonably paced candid shooting).
I’d be curious to hear Vincent’s thoughts on this (he surely uses cameras with more cross-type AF points and surely knows how it can help in getting a better photo)
Vincent ?
An excellent exercise to see the filming ability of this camera. Thank you for your work, it has certainly left the right impression! Can’t wait to get mine.
Hooray!
CANON! Please give 24P functionality to this camera via firmware!!!! I’ve already got one pre-ordered but the 5D2 would be an AWESOME B-Roll camera to go with my HV30 and XHA1. Without 24P, I would be forced to shoot in 30P on all my cameras 🙁
Wonderful. Very inspiring work. It seems like a new world has opened up for us photographers. Simply beautiful. Thank you.
Thanks for the effort, Monsieur Laforet. You did history, you know. The first Full HD video shot with a Dslr. You deserve all the kudos.
Daniel asked “Stu – could you, in theory, replicate the “180 degree shutter” by shooting at say 48 or 60fps, and then cutting out every other frame? (I know you can’t with this camera, i’m just asking hypothetically)”
The answer is yes—the result would be 24 fps video with each frame exposed at 1/48th. But that is surely breaking in through the back window when the front door really aught to be wide open!
That…is unreal. Well done to you. Well done to Canon.
Wow is all I can say, that is amazing, it’s a game changer. Great work & well earned beer !!!.
Is the server overloaded? I can’t download it……
Wow.
The doors of perception have been blown wide and I’m so grateful to you for your enthusiasm and generosity in sharing your experience.
I’m as excited to get my hands on my own as I am to see what you’re going to do with more than 72 hours.
Cheers,
Nicholas
I sure hope you paid Moby for that soundtrack.
hmmmmm.
For those of you who want the video centered use this link address: http://downloads.canon.com/CDLC/Reverie_Final_Cut2_midres.m4v
You the man! Dude!
Vincent,
Nice work! You’ve clearly been inspired by this new toy’s capability. Personal projects like this are hard to beat!
So how many times have you just sat, staring at your computer, watching it over and over again with a beaming grin on your face?
Ciao!
-C
Can I borrow $ 2,700, anyone?
Please, 🙁 ?
🙂
Rockin’
Good job. Now all photogs worldwide will want to be videog’s 🙂
24p
Loved the crisp clean images. Nice job Vincent. But, that motion was just awful. The frame rate cadence at 30p just screams “video.” C’mon Canon, give us 24p.
Vincent….
You F****ing Blew my knockers off…
Awesome shoot!!! you sure that you have not shot videos before…
Amazing Color reproduction, excellent composition,
The best part is the camera, the Lens and the DOF. Kudos to Canon..
This little camera is gonna kindle or rekindle the creative fire among a lot of people!!!
Once again, i thank you vincent for putting the time, money and effort in showcasing this awesomeness!!!
@David M, if you watch the credits you’ll see “Music Courtesy of Moby, Used with Permission.”
WOW!!! Vicent, you rock! Canon has done it yet again! I was in love when I first read the specs, but I could not imagine how truly awesome this camera is until I saw the short film. Now I am head over heals in love! Time to go and pre-order this beautiful camera. I suspect that there will be a lot more HD Xmas videos this year all thanks to the 5D MKII.
So, this and that superfast Casio P&S makes the future of photojournalism, action and sports look like it’s going to be video, or at least 30FPS with still frame grabs. A little bit sad, I think.
Beautiful result, i like de DOF effects and the atmosphere.
abolutely stunning. bravo, parfaitement maitrisé.
Been waiting all day for this. Downloading now. Thank you very much for this… Can’t wait.
Kudos, thanks for sharing.
Well done, and thank you Vincent…
The motion also bothers me somewhat on some frames. Did you use IS at all?
Vincent,
From everyone here at StillMotion, Bravo. We are… to say the LEAST, extremely impressed. You are truly one of the greats, and we’re very proud of everything you’ve done and are doing for our industry. We sat around this evening and watched the film, and we where silent, in awe.. simply breath taking.
Thank you so much.
John, Patrick, Amina and the rest of the team here.
Wow wow wow. Superb work!
Absolutely stunning!!! BRAVO!
Unreal!!!! Thanks Vincent. Enjoy that beer you earned it.
I expected something “big” after the hype you created … :-))) But this film is not only technically stunning, taking into account that you kind of jumped into the cold water without any real preparation. In addition there is a catching story in this master piece !
I can only repeat : And the Oscar goes to …. Vincent Laforet – the man who revolutionized film making.
Let’s give him a few years …..
That is seriously one of the most impressing things I’ve ever seen.
on it and then be amazed
Amazing work! Well done, It’s a great job!
Anyone notice the several consistent “hot pixels” in the scenes that appear to be shot in the higher ISOs. This could be edited out in post, in theory. Hot pixels will typically show up in the same spot when shooting many consecutive long exposures and can be healed or cloned in PS, though video would be slightly a different story- particularly in non-static scenes. Most cameras are not immune to this (my 1DS Mark III will exhibit this on occasion, temporarily).
Also, though not the end-all rolling shutter test, the fast motion of the rims on the SUV tires look promising.
Thanks for the video.
Edited to add:
I was wondering how you did the video motion shots. For a while I was thinking maybe you had a steadicam – but you didn’t mention one in the credits. Now I know. That little gyroscope is amazing. I wonder if I can DIY one… 🙂
-=- Terence
Hi Vincent,
I just wanted to add to the huge amount of praise I see here. It’s been an inspirational ride following your blog the last few days. Thanks!
Very interesting – I’ve ordered mine! One question: the final aerial shot was quite noisy compared to the rest of the video, what was the ISO and why did you chose it?
Now that is game changing stuff! WOW! What a great film, simply superb. The quality is jaw dropping and great choice of music.
Congratulations to all!
Great video. 🙂 How much is this camera gonna cost?
Yay. I was skeptical but bravo. This is a tech demo as art. Two great things together.
Now for anyone who thinks that we need 24P – wait till you see these types of wonderful images moving at 100fps. 24P is an anachronism. You will all become believers – trust me.
Also wait till you see these same wonderful images in 3D stereo … bring on the tech demos.
Congrants to Canon too, if they can put these tools in our hands at a decent price.
I guess “stunning” is the right word.
Thanks Vincent. Congrats.
Congratulations !
I love the look , the DOF , the sensibility (it looks like there is some big noise in some skies).
I hate the video style, what Stu said about he shutter. Is there any chance that a firmware brings 180° ?
quand même Bravo
Benjamin
Thanks Vincent for your amazing work with this project.
This is pure jaw dropping stuff. There is no doubt the 5DMKII produces unbelievable video quality and in your hands it becomes pure art. The resolution is nothing short of stunning. The detail on the close-up of the guys face are almost cutting lines in my screen.
I would love to see a “tech” version of Reverie with a note in a corner with what settings and lens you used for each scene.
As a footnote i don’t think we should forget that to get this kind of quality out this camera the importance of proper camera support. As it’s not really made for shooting video handheld (yet)on the go, viewfinder blacked out, cumbersome AF in LV mode etc.
I think the when it hit the shelves will hear many saying; Hey my 800$ camcorder shoots better video than this! Not resolution or IQ wise of course but more the final “look” of the clip. I guess that many amateurs will get better final results with an ordinary camcorder thanks to easier handling. Shaky HD video will never be a hit ;-).
amazing!!!
i’m speechless. =)
Thanks Vincent–you continue to be an inspiration to all of us. Cheers and thanks for the posting.
Everybody has already said everything so I’ll just say:
YOU ROCK!!! C’etait magnifique!!!
Michael Mann, Miami Vice style! I like!
just great man…. top gun material! 🙂
I’d love some of those clips to habe been a bit longer. So brief, when there’s so much to take in.
Apart from that, I’m waiting for part II!
He spots here from the chopper right? Lands it, drives frantically to the spot, followed by a quick location search, then we see her face melt as he rushes towards her with the flowers…
Next he wakes up again? We see them walk away into the blur of the night together? He’s too late, she’s walking off with another man?
Vincent, you’re leaving us hanging!!!
That was FANTASTIC!!!! I’m absolutely amazed. I expected it to be OK, but in my wildest imagination I never dreamed it would be this good.
I am lost for words. Canon showed a nice piece of kit as a reply to Nikon’s D3. I never thought I would like to take movies with my SLR but now I may consider doing it.
Great job on the film Vince! It’s certainly inspiring to see an example of what can be done with video on a DSLR. Thanks!
Now I’m able to dream again. Thanks to give the fresh new dream feature to a poor guy 🙂
You’re a sorcerer
This makes me look forward to Photokina tomorrow to hold that beauty myself…
Congratulations for the beautiful result!
Vincent, this is just beautiful, stunning work! Can’t wait for getting my 5DMKII
Why not create a torrent of the full 1080p version?
Is it true that the camera automatically chooses the aperteru in video mode, so that you can not choose what aperture you use?
cool movie…
but it seems the focus is fixed at all the scenes…does the AF work in movie mode? is it fast enough?
and…i expected less noise in movies with your excitments…it performed just like my small camcorder in the first scene with los f noise specially in the sky…
> Why not create a torrent of the full 1080p version?
Splendid Idea. It would Scale Perfectly. Just Upload the Movie once or twice into the Cloud.
You could use opentracker (Piratebay uses this one) as Tracker.
http://erdgeist.org/arts/software/opentracker/
Opentracker helped them to reduce their Servers fourfold.
16 Servers with Hypertracker -> 6 Servers with Opentracker
100% CPU load -> 15-20% CPU load
And i doubt that you would reach more than 6500req/seq.
Excellent, thanks for the video, far exceeded my expectations.
Many congratulations on all your efforts, brilliant!
i would love to download a full resolution version so I could watch it on a Sony Bravia HD telly, the Canon site doesn’t do it justice, the resolution’s too low and it’s off centre!
Minor gripes though, a fantastic showcase for Canon, and for you in your new career as a movie director!
Well done to all involved.
Rod
Beautiful video, I’d really like to see it in it’s native resolution though…I hope we’ll be able to download a 1080p version soon, or some 1080p screencaps would do nicely.
I wonder where the camera streams all this data into… a field recording disk array I guess…
anyway: I want one (finally a reason to move from the consumer digital rebel xt cameras up)
UNREAL… absolutely incredible.. SO glad I pre-ordered!
Thats one incredible movie for 72 hours of shooting + post
Great job!
Regarding all the questions about posting the full version on a torrent, this have been discussed and answered already by Vincent in his earlier blogpost.
Quote:
Jonny – thought about that too. But this is video from a prototype camera… and no company in the world would allow people to download a file to their hard drives and analyze data from a prototype camera… and given that this prototype’s footage is flawless… I’m kinda scared to see what the final production model can do! That’s the other issue…
Comment by Vincent Laforet 09.20.08 @ 4:50 pm
eirkso – I’m not the one that doesn’t want it to be downloaded… Canon Japan is… I don’t think there’s anything to worry about… given how amazing the quality of the video is that comes straight out of the camera – I frankly can’t understand it – but I have to respect it. They respected me enough to lend me the camera… so I need to do it the right way… so that I get a chance of ever doing it again… make sense?
Whatever I do – I need to get it cleared by Canon… theses posts help put the pressure on them – and to let them know there is a real appetite to get this video out there… so pls keep visiting – send links to friends – AND POST COMMENTS… I can forward it to them… I am not running any ads on this blog – so it’s not like I ‘m asking you to do this to drive up income…;) We need to put the pressure on!!!! Once I find a good solution – they still need to give me final clearance…

Hey Vincent… AMAZING work!truley inspiring! i’ve been stalking your blog for the last couple of weeks ever since i saw your post on bejing!
Just a quick question though (i dont think you’ve answerd this) what camera mount did you use on the car bonnet(hood), and also what camera case/cover (the rubber thing)? that thing looks very sturdy!
Cheers
Bravo pour cette magnifique vidéo! Tout ceci prouve que la production cinéma n’est plus réservée qu’aux grosses majores. Nous vivons une époque formidable!
Amazing, spectacular… great work!
Unbelievable!
So which do you prefer – Vincent the Photographer or Vincent the Cinematographer?
🙂
Astonishing!

The suction cups on the bonnet of the car are from Manfrotto and can be found here http://www.bogenimaging.us (search for Manfrotto SUCTION GRIP W/CAMERA SUPPORT)
This is just stunning. We’ve all seen good, quality film before, but to know that this was recorded on a still-film camera, that is truly magnificent.
Can’t wait for the next video. Maybe you can get a career in movie making? 🙂
WOW – amazing.. just amazing.. this is definitely a game changer.
Excuse me while I pick my jaw up off of the top of my desk. That is uneffing believable. Now I only need help in convincing the wife that I need to spend another $2,500 on a camera. Any takers?
NICE! Great movie, and I grew up listening to Moby which made it that much better for me! I can’t wait to get my hands on one of these cameras!
That was absolutely unbelivable. AMAZING. Mind boggling, really. Fantastic. You know there are things that are being hyped a lot and don’t live up at all to that hype. Well this TOTALLY lived up to the hype AND exceeded my wildest expectations. WOW. Absolutely unbelivable. This is definitely ground breaking. I can’t really put into words how amazing this is and how excited I am about this whole project.
Vincent. You are truly an amazing person. Going out and doing this and just spending 5K of your own money withouth knowing how this whole thing is going to turn out. Mad props to you, man. You will definitely go down in history as someone who pushed the envelope and was brave enough to go out and do this.
Thanks again for making this movie. I guess this thread/the comments show how excited people are about this and I guess those people who were skeptical at the beginning are in for a treat.
I’m here at work and I’m raving about this video and telling everyone to go and check it out and be amazed about it.
Final word. Amazing. Canon 5DMkII + Vincent Laforet = an amazing combination.
You’ve inspired a lot of people with your passion, and lightened the wallets of a few of us! I pre-ordered one yesterday, but I’m afraid it will end up back-ordered.
Thanks for sharing this with us!
this is seriously some STUNNING SHIT!
the captures from them lovely prime lenses. haha.
good job!

Great video. Truly amazed at your talent and the capabilities of this cam.
Thanks Vincent.
Very cool short film. This proves how capable a camera the 5dm2 is gonna be. Amazing lowlight footage!
Now we just need 24fps and shutter speed control. Canon, don’t let us down on something so simple to implement. This camera is about to make me make a full switch from Nikon.
I guess you’ve probably stopped reading these by now but, really amazing work Vincent, I think you made a great case for this camera and I can’t wait to see where the Smugmug project goes.
Wish I could’ve been there for the victory party last night haha.
Most impressive indeed, and that’s an understatement if ever there was one.
I must now admit to myself that it is truly the time to dispense with the denial I’ve been living with and become excited about the inevitable addition of not only more tools to my armamentarium but also some serious rethinking of how I see, capture and produce images for my clientele.
Thank you
George Weir
Oh my god. I am creaming in my boxers. That’s was beautiful.

Did anyone notice the aerial long exposures of the cars on the road… (1min 35 sec.)
Good stuff
Vince,
Great scoop.
Congrats to you and your entire team. I think Noah’s really got a bright future in front of the camera.
These are exciting times. Have fun, it’s going to be a ride.
Ciao
This changes everything.
Holly Cow! That is absolutely amazing! Perfect tool for us stock photographers and videographers! I’m in line to get one…
Spectacular. Great job. I’m going to buy this camera tomorrow.
Hmmm. Looks very good but this short reeks of the 30P “videoness” quality. I have still ordered this camera for the stills capability but I’m still undecided if I like the look of the D90 better. Too bad the D90 is DX sized, 720P, and bad compression. But the 24P on the D90 has a nicer aesthetic than this camer’s 30P.
Impressive!
However, I hope Canon tweaks the 5D MKII to be able to film 24P/25P/30P switchable, or better yet, come out with dedicated full-frame video camera!
Glad to see you still suck 🙂 Nice looking work there brother.
k
seems the hi-def version on smugmug isnt available anymore? it just reverts to mid-def 🙁
Just pure magic!
Just amazing. 72 hours, a new camera and $5,000 of your own money! Awesome result.
Thanks for doing this. It’s always great to see what the camera’s amateurs like myself can afford can do in the hands of pro’s.
Will look for your name in DP/Directorial roles on upcoming films 🙂 You might have just have to move to LA.
Ostala sam zapanjena ,video je toliko dobar da ga
nemožeš prestati gledati,or great work.
Looks like Smugmug couldn’t handle the server load. I know they are trying to help, but it makes them look like an amatures when they don’t have a plan to handle large amounts of traffic.
It’s really gorgeous!!!!!!!!!
Totally amazed and it was only 1/4 resolution! I’m not a pro but I certainly see the potential in travel and recreation use just off the top of my head. Congratulations on the amazing work!
I’ve converted a small section of the film to 24p to show how it will look for those who want true 24p. I’m surprised Canon made this camera shoot 30P. It takes up more memory, and it isn’t an industry standard. However, great job with this nonetheless!
http://www.marty-martin.com/Reverie24.mov
Well done Vince, now it´s time for Canon to up the ante and offer a firmware that supports 24p 1/48th. Then this will be a true revolution and they would sell 3x as many cameras.
The protectionist stance on Canon will only make them loose sales in the long run, a hacker could probably do the 24p in the near future like the CHDK mods recently on the 40D.
@torin
We can *absolutely* handle the server load. Canon apparently got upset and asked Vincent to ask us to take down the 720p video.
Why on earth Canon wouldn’t want everyone seeing how awesome their camera is is beyond me. Crazy.
I should have mentioned that the “We” in “We can *absolutely* handle the server load.” is SmugMug. 🙂
The load isn’t even a blip for us. Go see for yourself how fast the videos play at SmugMug: http://vincentlaforet.smugmug.com/ and http://blogs.smugmug.com/don/2008/09/22/amazing-canon-5d-mkii-hd-video-footage/
Some of the other (lower end) canon cameras have a limit on how long one video clip can be. Does this camera have that limit?
amazing – great film, and amazing video quality from that camera
No words. This is stunning!
The only thing is the motion looks like video. But then again, I guess that’s where RED comes in. Full Frame sensor with a few lenses, but Film-like motion!
Otherwise, Great production… Just limited by the camera i suppose… But that just makes me a film junkie.
Awesome like a hot dog!
Simply bitchin’
OMG!!! Talk about inspiration. Great job on the limited time you have with the camera. The 5D mkII is definitely on my wishlist.
Vincent,
Simply amazing. Things have come a long way since we were all using Nikon FM2s and Canon F1s.
Completely great work!
Big fan from Bangkok.
Amazing! I can’t believe that a DSLR did that! Stunning images and very creative application. Great work, Vincent!
>Some of the other (lower end) canon cameras have a limit on how long one video clip can be. Does this camera have that limit?
It is 14 minutes at 1080
Just a single word: Wow!
Vincent ..your work on this film is really inspiring and …I think I may have to sell of my D300 and switch to Canon … I really am impressed with the low light performance . One question …Does the camera blur when you track or pan as that was an early issue with the Thomson Viper Cam that director Michael Mann uses?
This looks sweet! Even better than I expected! Well done, and kudos to Canon for a great camera.
Does the camera have under/overcranking capabilities?
This is AMAZING!!!… besides the camera that we have been waiting forever!!!.. the work you did is out of this world…
🙂
Very good, cant wait for the mark II
Amazing, very sharpen, crisp, high contrast.
bravo!
WOW, WOW, WOW.
Very impressive. I was really hoping it wasn’t going to be all that exciting, because the wife is going to kill me for ‘needing’ yet another camera. Oh well, she’ll get over it! 😉
Great work, Vincent!
Amazing, great video, you show the infinite posibilities to do great videos with de canon 5d MK II
Good stuff. Although you did this for your own reasons I hope canon reimburse you for something. Or maybe get commission on all the sales you’ve generated through this effort. 🙂
Thanks for sharing and I can’t wait for the sequel.
EPIC WIN!
I hate this video.
Now I have to buy an new DSLR, new lenses, new CF Cards, a new mac and more.
You endanger my Marriage
Mind blowing. The crispness of the image. The beauty of the bokeh (the kissing scene out of focus is splendid!). Perfect!
Congrats,
Blaise
hot…hOT….HOT !!!
Thanks Vincent what an amazing video, have put a link to your site in the Manchester flickr group hope they all take a look. Paul Jones
Jaw dropping! =O
Can you please tell me how well this camera handles image stabilization? I noticed your chopper scenes were quite smooth. Do you use a gyro or something to prevent camera shake? That is our biggest concern adopting this camera for our video production. Thanks!
Nice work. It appears that the D5M2 is miles out front in its handling of motion, full chip image collecting and artifact-free image production.
Two questions: Will there be a 1:1 1080 version for download? We really would like to see it at full scale.
Did you have to shoot around any artifacts that showed up at full res but disappeared at half-res?
One quibble: your site says the in-page file is quarter resolution. Actually, it’s quarter area and half-resolution at 960 wide.
Picky picky…
Part II:
I notice several scenes in which exposure jumps are visible. The moon, aerial views, etc.
Were these just shots that were not exposure locked before rolling? Other images that seem to be susceptible to exposure jumps due to lighting changes appear to have avoided the issue.
We see this sort of thing in the default settings of the Nikon D90 HD mode, but that camera has other artifacts the 5DM2 appears to avoid.
Well Vincent, I’m impressed. It seems this camera will change the video industry.
Your talent as a video maker can not be disregarded too.
Your lens lineup made me feel a bit envious too.
Good low light quality for 1 light only.
Unbearable hyperreality TV/video feel due to 30 frames/sec. Will need transfer to 24fps and softening to pass as “film”. Bizzare “blue-box” like feeling of the women’s silhouetee/profile against the water. Needs serious color correction work. If the codec is 4:1:1 which is most likely at this acquisition speed (38 mbit/sec) it’ll not be easy if at all plausible.
Allover no big deal. Any pro video camera will be another league (higher). At higher price sticker of course.
Camera is $2,700… cool
How much was the full production cost for the video?
Interesting – but even more interesting is how well Canon markets their products.
absolutely wonderful!
OMG, this makes me rethink life, imagining new possibilities…Video capability on a still camera was of absolutely no interest until I saw this.
Reverie – I love where you’re going and I want to see more.
What a wonderfull camera and nice lighting Vince 😉 I ordered too…do you need an unpaid assistant ;)??
That video is nothing short of fantastic! A real work of art, I wouldn’t believe it was done with DSLR. Just amazing, I wish I could make something remotely close to this quality!
Superb stuff. I’m inspired. Cheers for making my day.
Absolutely amazing. You did a fantastic job and have only made my concrete resolve to get the Mark II more solid, if it were possible. This is going to change everything.
Seriously though, you did a fantastic job for never doing this before. Awesome.
WOW. I’ll chime in. Amazing work. The camera’s capabilities are beyond impressive, but it still takes a great deal of talent and vision to produce what you did. Thanks for sharing!
This is beyond a dream come true for anyone passionate about pictures – still or moving – and it feels like it was the best thing ever that you got the opportunity you did. In your hands you have turned this into more than art. It’s a talking piece which will no doubt spur on the about how much longer the mediums of film and photography must remain disparate. No doubt the purist from each camp will rue the day the 5D MKII was outdoored and as to whether it’s a practical and viable alternative to dedicated hd video recorders, well that remains to be seen. You have no doubt turned people on to the endless possibilities available now. Canon have crafted a truly amazing piece of kit and you have shown the way- a path down which many no doubt will head.
Thanks to you for shooting it and to the Canon bigwig who took a chance and did the right thing.
We are all inspired by this entire undertaking.
>>Imagination enhances reality!<<
Legen…wait for it…dary!
That was absolutely stunning! I’m even more excited now to see what this camera will do to the photography/movie industries than I was when I first laid eyes on the stills. Incredible work!
Can the 1080p version be put on torrent? Seems like a no cost way we could see the full size version
Can you publish a torrent of the full res version?
Simply amazing quality and great video. Looks like I need to start saving money!
Nice stuff Vin. Your creativity under pressure is as amazing as the camera seems to be.
Justin
Amazing…jaw dropping…I can’t wait to show it to everyone I know. The light, colors, imagery, music… the possibilities of tech that enables artists like yourself… Please, please post a torrent of the full resolution version. If you don’t have time to setup a torrent yourself, send me a mail and I will arrange it.
Hi again Vincent.
I guess your still exhausted after the weekend. Then you wake up to what an amazing stir your video have caused all over the world in just 24 hours.
I have a question regarding the New Your clip from the chopper. How come the video is reversed in that scene? All the cars are going backwards ;-).
There is no 24fps on that camera! I love the work in this video, but the greatest disappointment of my day was seeing Canon screw up yet again and not include a 24 frame per second shooting mode. (Takes me back to the days of the XL1.) Apparently it is limited to 30fps and that is just sad. I am hoping that they will release a firmware upgrade or something to fix this colossal oversight. Please, someone, please just tell me that everything I have researched and read about this camera is wrong and that it can shoot 24fps. I will buy the camera instantly if I am wrong!
stunning and incredible work
Excellent work Vincent and Crew. Amazing it was all done with a still camera. Canon is FINALLY onto something. Cheers! Shelly
Wow. Period. Excellent work. Really stunning.
BTW, anyone know the sunglass that dude is wearing?
maybe Jannard’s oakley glasses… RED.Com belongs to Jim Jannard 🙂
The images are very nice. I wondered if you did any sound quality with this camera? Will that be part of the “behind the scenes” video you plan to post later? For a small newspaper staff person, one “camera” would be nice to have to be able to do most assignments involving video, rather than a camera and then an audio recorder…thanks…

I always wanted a Canon XH-A1 HDV camera, but was more into photography than video. The Canon 5D is a game changer.
Thanks for taking the time to put this together and sharing.
Simply brilliant.
I am pumped we did not switch back over.
Thanks, dude.
i was keeping my fingers crossed that this short “film” would blow my socks off. well, it didn’t. Nothing against Vincent or his filmmaking chops, my comments are only on the camera. I am an experienced cinematographer and also a photo enthusiast (owner of HVX200 and D300 respectively) and lately i’ve also come to love the look of using my M2 adapter and Nikon lenses with the videocamera. But this setup is a very inconvenient to say the least. So when i heard the news last week I hoped the 5D video would look a lot better than the D90 -full frame DOF and that movie feel. I was wrong. The HD video is just that: “video”. The look and feel is far from cinematic. The 30p is the killer(so was the auto iris/exposure). Canon must get the 5D MII to shoot true 24p with full manual controls before any filmmaker (with drama in mind, not docs) will be serious about replacing his/her 24p HD videocamera regardless of the mega pixals.
Who knows. I will probably end of getting the 5D anyway and hope for a 24p firmware fix or go back “to the old” days of down converting in post with so-so software conversions…
Very excited about video and SLR’s being combined.
… and I just can’t wait for Nikon to respond. (given that I have a stable of Nikon lenses) Video is where my heart is.
Great video, amazing pictures. I am a bit new using DSLR cameras, but maybe I consider buying a better one in a close future.
Your photos are amazing Vincent.
Absolutely gorgeous!
It may be that 24p will be a feature of the 1Ds mark 4. Maybe even an articulated LCD. This model is a great way for Canon to get feedback on what features are most important to us.
Wow such a stunning video. I have some crap video of my own that I need to edit and you just inspired me to get busy!
Hm… I can not view this thing? Any way to provide a download?
Would love to see Reverie, but Apple says that you can not install Quicktime on some versions of XP. Seems like my HP laptop has that version.
Is it possible to get the password to use on Smugmug?
TIA
Chuck
Wow. Absolutely incredible.
Blogged it:
http://jonrawlinson.com/2008/09/reverie-sample-video-canon-eos-5d-mark-ii/
good job!
thanx
A shame to read many commentators to complain about the hyper reality of the footage. To talk of revolution in the visual language we should not always be asking for the old ways to be returned. To me it is shame that 30P is not much better than 24P and the question as to why not 60P or 120P or 300P. But oh the DOF, the dynamic range, the contrast, and the sharpness is a revelation arriving to video at last. Revolution arrives many years late and always there are people saying too soon for them but I say this is progress. We should wait to see where it goes or become part of it.
I think the reason the recording need to stop every 12 minutes or so is that the FAT32 file system won’t allow any documents exceed the 4Gb mark. So when the .MOV file hits this limit, the recording will have to stop and restart with a new file name.
Very nice footage. Brilliant photographic sense works well with video 🙂
Damn, i was being so good in thinking i didnt want one fo these…. now after watching that, i want one real bad!!! Unbelievable
I thought it was amazing, but I wouldn’t want to shoot serious video on it. In that small body, it couldn’t possibly have the level of image control as even the Canon XL2. Maybe Canon’s next step is to put this technology in a real camcorder body, with real camcorder controls.
It seems bizarre that a camera obviously suited towards hardcore documentary photographers would be tested and discussed and wildly praised as a device for shooting scripted corporate cheese. Definitely changes things – wish it was a better example.
EPIC
Also can we get see the full res version?
Very good capture 5D MK II..HDV mode ..which one CF for good capture this Movie ?
The impression of bad hyperreality comes unfortunately from : 1) the usage of 30fps which in everybody’s mind (in NTSC land) is equal to unscripted/live television 2) progressive character of carrier, while television is 30fps over 60 interlaced fields. Drama was “always” shot with 24fps and whether we like it or not this frame rate is perceived as feature story telling method.(Europe is a bit different). For the experience to be new and revolutionary a different frame rate should be used, eg. IMAX is 60fps . 30fps progressive is excellent for corporate pep talk Big Brother movies though. Before Canon announces the details of the codec this corporate/wedding field might remain the only viable area for 5D2 filmmaking. If the codec samples chroma at 4:1:1 or 4:2:0 it is useless for any pro postproduction. With the bit rate of 38mbit/sec it is the most likely option , unfortunately.
Cheers.
Amazing cinematography. I loved the exposure and the lighting. make more!
WOW! That is so amazing. Great stuff! Crazy to see how much different it is than the camcorder.
Can’t wait until this all reaches the Rebel in about four years time or less. (Remember the long ago days in 2003 when an 8MP Canon body cost $8 grand? And how we thought that 8MP was all we’d ever really need for resolution? So young and innocent we were in those days…)
Anyway, video looks great (memo to Henry: One man’s “cheese” is another’s bread and butter, so as a test video, the footage works just fine – and I look forward to seeing your documentary footage when you get your mitts on a 5D MII) and definitely marks a big step in d-SLR evolution. What Vincent doesn’t address is the new 5D’s ability to record sound, so don’t sell your HD camcorders on eBay just yet. Also, anyone buying the new 5D for video recording better hope that those just announced 100GB cards drop in price really, really soon…
Wonderfulllllllll !!!
Looks amazing!!!
Absolutely impressive and without comparison with the Nikon D90, I wonder how nikon will answer to that given their total lack of experience in video
amazing!
Amazing. Thats all i can say.
I’ve just shat myself
Amazing!!!!
Fantastic work, Vincent.
By the way, I’m flattered that some say I have a spooky resemblance to you. What do you say?
http://stobblehouse.com/text/whoiseolakestobblehouse.html
Eolake
It is simply amazing… I never dreamed of this kind of video coming out of a DSLR. The bar has been set up very very very high for all other manufacturers to follow… Me, a photographer, I will have to start learning video from now on.
OMG!
I can’t believe the incredible quality! The images are truly sharp and the color very rich! I was initially put off by the video feature in a DSLR….not any more and after a three year wait, I can’t wait to get this camera!!!!
Speechless…..
UNBELIEVABLE! From a DSLR. Time to save up my pennies again. Thank you Canon but my wife will hate you.
Unparalleled!
All I can say is amazing. A definite game changer and an awesome video and concept. Great Job Vincent!!!
badass video.
pure awesome.
I may even sell all of my nikon equip to buy this camera (full frame adv., video). great video. creative use of nyc lights and skyline.
Thanks
Fantastic work, Vincent.
Really nice video.
woweee bravo
If I’m Moby I’m seriously reconsidering no longer letting “independents” use my music and I’m making a call to my lawyer. Your purpose may not have been financially motivated, but certainly Canon will sell a lot of cameras because of this, and you have gotten a lot of publicity (= free advertising and future clients) from this video which clearly owes a lot to the choice of music (hence your reluctance to make it available sans music.) I’m not putting you or your work down, just saying Moby got taken advantage of here. I think this is one case of “Fair Use” being used unfairly.
Wow, wonderful movie, Vince. Nice behind the scenes film too. I thought the D90 was great with it’s video capabilities, but this goes a step beyond, what with longer clip times and higher res and full frame instead of APS-C so stuff can more easily be thrown farther out of focus easier. I think it’s definitely the end of the line for 35mm adapters on video cameras. And a great new era for high quality indie moviemaking.
where can i DOWNLOAD the video? I can only stream it, but im missing a codec or something like that.
Thanx anyway.
You are an inspiration to many. Great video skills!
This is GREAT I’m a Nikon Shooter but will have me take a look at Canon. I starting shooting with Pentax when they cost more than a Nikon back in the 1960’s. Great work good luck!
That was incredible! 🙂
Vincent, Very, very beautiful. Wonderfully made. I’m as excited as anyone about this new camera, but the one downfall I see (and it seems to be a REAL downfall) is that in your movie, and the only other video clip I’ve seen shot with this camera, Michael Reichman’s (at luminous-landscape.com), in neither one was the audio captured by the camera mike. This lends me to believe that we’re about to have a tremendous visual machine with a crappy microphone stuck to it. I’ve read that it does come with a jack in the side of the camera, but that it’s on the cheapo side, no for any “real” type of microphone. This is just an early comment……and I sure hope I’m wrong!
why can’t i stop watching this.
Canon should just use your video for TV ad.
Did anyone else notice the city-skape shot just before the rewind part was running backwards? I wonder if that was just for fun or if there was a reason?
Regarding audio: Nowadays you can get great, inexpensive stand-alone audio recorders, so no biggie that this camera doesn’t come with XLR jacks and audio pots. If it did, the surface real estate requirements would compromise its function as a still camera, so I think the compromise made was a good one, although I guess you could imagine a plug in screw on module sort of like a vertical grip with all the jacks and pots. Still it would mess with the mobility of the camera to tie it down with wires and such.
I am a Nikon user.
This is the first time I consider buying a Canon after saw this short film.
Absolutely stunning.
Also a Nikon user…
Optics is a key element here and there seems to be quite a lot of it in use in that video. That will go WAY beyond the price of the camera only.
The video itself is very good though I got pleased with the editing too which is fantastic.
Awesome output from the new Canon 5D MkII. This video was shot with a SLR camera. Earlier posts on this blog have still photos made as frame grabs from the video.
Cette caméra est de loin celle qui va révolutionner la photo numérique. Merci beaucoup pour cette séquence.
I need ONE 🙂
I absolutely loved this video. You have a great eye for this filming thing; not just for photography! Beautifully done, and I am impressed with the camera as well.
This is amazing. I am speechless Nikon shooter.
Woah. This is so very nice! Thanks a bunch!!
Excellent showcase for the new camera, congrats.
M. Laforest
A very good commercial video indeed. What are the possibilities for direct sound instead of fabricated as you did? I was for example thinking on doing photos and documentaries all together.
Thanks for the reply.
Robert Etcheverry, photographer, Montreal
Vincent, the new 5D and your efforts kick butt bro. Thanks for sharing!

The downscaled video has a interlaced look in my eyes, is it really progressive not 1080i?
Vincent
Did you use the 24L MkI or the new MkII?
Thank you
Absolutely amazing. Still cannot believe that some canon owners complain about this camera. Can’t wait to get my hands on one!
How was the H264 video that the camera records edited in FCP? Since the H264 is primarily a delivery codec, was it transcoded to Apple Prores or some other editing friendly format in FCP?
amazing!!! great camera and great job vincent!
It seems like to me, that what Apple did to the cell phone market, Canon is doing the same thing to the digital SRL camera market. Sorry Nikon
owesome…..Vincent You are a genius.
owesome..Vincent You are a genius.
Vincent Laforet is the leonardo D of Digital Innovation
Thank you so much for a wonderful look into the new wave of imaging. Its been such a delight to follow your works and “REVERIE” is such a visual treat.
Bravo ! merci, superbe réalisation.
Jean Claude.
Vincent, your work, ‘Reverie’, points to the possibility of HD video being very accessible (and, maybe this is more the point – you can make use of your high spec stills lenses to capture HD).
I thought ‘Reverie’ was nicely shot and showed the skilled eye of a stills photographer, in composition and the fact that it was more imaginatively shot than some may have done in TV.
I know that the short film served to get a glimpse at the camera’s abilities, particularly in low light, but I think that among all the praise there is no mention of a good number of jarring cuts.
Most obviously, at the start of the piece the cut between the actor dropping the flowers to his head and shoulder shot doesn’t work. He leaves frame in the close up, but doesn’t enter the ‘MCU’. His action doesn’t match.
I think a ‘focus-up’ on the second shot of the piece and less time on the defocus of the first would have improved that transition.
Tilting up on the wide shot of the woman in red doesn’t work in my opinion unless accompanied by some physical vertical movement upwards and even then looks a little unmotivated.
The hand pulling the flowers from the bucket shot takes too long to cut off and the energy is lost.
Again, a continuity issue: the bead of sweet in C.U. doesn’t match the head turn and the daffodils in the hand in the helicopter – what happened to them?
I think the video deserves praise for the quality of the framing of the shots and for the demonstration of the high quality of the images from the Canon 5D and therefore it’s a shame that the cuts didn’t allow the piece to flow and ultimately the viewer to understand the narrative; had this been the case the piece would have flowed rather than looking like a row of nicely composed stills on video.
Dave M Reply:
October 12th, 2008 at 7:23 pm
Amazingly petty nit-picking. It flowed perfectly, and the whole piece is pretty astounding for three days of work, start to finish.
Please, post your website where you have your perfect examples of the flawless editing of which you speak.
WTF!
Why would anyone want fewer fps? If you want to degrade your footage so that it flickers (film effect) do it in post.
24p please.
Beautiful, I am so stoked, on my christmas list! I am going to link to this post on my bloe, http://www.jlmcreative.com/time2blog
This is amazing.
Fantastic. I’m totally overwhelmed by your artistic and technical proficiency.
btw: with all the long hours put into this self-imposed challenge, you still manage to live your life and not forget to give credit to your son in the “making of” piece – pushes the coolness factor one notch further 🙂
This is simply amazing. How much space/gb did the video take up?
This video is from a “still” camera. Excellent! Virtually no ghosting in any movements. Super sharp edges.
Uh, I may have to drop my Pentax for this.
the video looks like crappy video, it really sucks to see handycam footage from such a technologically advanced piece of gadgetry.
time to go back to shooting film.
is the frame rate quoted by canon for 12-bits or 14-bits? i only ask because the nikon d300’s frame rate drops down significantly from their quoted frame rate at 14-bits.
http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/D300/D300A.HTM
can the 5d-m2 do vertically oriented videos? i.e., portrait mode?
Here is another great photo/video presentation using the Canon 5D Mark II by Philippine commercial photographer John Chua using a borrowed test unit from Canon. Wonderful possibilities with this camera.

These files are said to be uncompressed… well they are H264 at 40mbps. Very nice files, but compressed. So the camera makes h264 at 40mbps, I love it, but this will soon be commonplace. Another flavor of the month.
what was the sequence setting for editing?
You go guy!
A lovely pearl to string on the necklace of art inspiration!
The photos are very good, but there are a fair number of “hot” pixels in each photo – sample gallery. You can see those red or white pixels in almost every photo. I’m sure the final production models will be much cleaner.
I want 5DMk2 !!!
24P! Manual Shutter! At least 1/48…Come on Canon!!!
shusss good job
Beautiful! What a great pallet of colour you have captured.
After see this demo I am returning my Nikon D700 tomorrow. I who however like to see more still from the 5D Mrk II. IS there any place to see those, not from the video?
Great demo! $5000 Canon should pay you back for all the free advertising you are given them! Really
I thought the d90’s video was rediculously awesome.
This blows my friggin MIND!
This is mind blowing an absolutley evolutionery peice of kit it is gonna revolutionise my buisiness OMG I am extatic cant wait for the release WOW
To you: just amazing artistic work. To the industry: watch out SONY, DALSA, THOMSON and other $100,000 + digital cinema camera makers, but also the good folks at RED. This is TRUE 35mm sensor territory! Below $3,000. I suspect Canon themselves are not yet fully aware of what they have just unleashed and the potential it carries for even more. 24/25p, true uncompressed RAW capture, 2K/4K resolution (after all, this sensor has 21 million photisites, doesn’t it)… Oh gosh, I guess I’m falling in a REVERIE.
Great video, great job!
Amazing! Unreal!
Canon, please please please 24p !!! or anything for better film-like results.
BTW, going real 24p will reduce file size as well…

Do not forget your fellow cinematographers in Europe, where 25p is also needed. 🙂
Such stunning photography allows us to realize we must be near the verge of quality-inducing breakdown of the basic (and proper) video creation process. What used to be a static-based art creation with SLRs, has opened up to full motion and color use with the same device!
Good job! I was really impressed!
However, I noticed some waving in the horizon, when the city is being shown from the helicopter. It are minor things, though
WoW… just WoW, no wonder that Canon has a problem now 🙂

24P would be sweet before it released!
OUTSTANDING, KEEP UP THE AWESOME WORK!
vincent – love the flick. thrilled all is well at home. talk soon.

I’m deeply impressed, what a creative mind like you can do with a semi-pro DSLR in 72 hours..
I’m mostly wordless about the movie and your work. And I’d love to see more from you !
The Sony KDS-60A2000 HDTV is very energy efficient, only 0.31 watts on standby
I will buy a Canon MKII right away… IF… they add 24p.
It NEEDS 24p.
That was amazing. The gap between still and video are getting closer and closer.
Link exceeded bandwidth. 🙁
I’m not trolling .. but I don’t see what all the fuss is about. I haven’t seen the movie because it’s not available due to bandwith issues.
Does this camera have a microphone? Does it have an external mic jack? Does it have a heaphonoe jack? Does it have a limitation on the amount of time recorded? (other than the size of the memory card this is) What is the battery life while recording video?
Those are just a few questions I came up with without thinking too hard.

Yes, built-in mic and stereo mic input. Don’t know if there’s an HP jack to monitor audio, and I doubt there’s a level control. 4GB or 29:59 is max, whichever comes first. Full quality video hits about 12 minutes and the 4GB card is maxed. Transfer rate is about 8mb/sec, and you CAN take still shots during video recording. There’s also an optional wifi pack you can strap onto the 5D to record to external USB, etc.
cool, mmerci à toi pour l’imagre 🙂
Post it up on Vimeo.com free HD video hosting.
Hi,Dear.
What a great quality! By the way,I couldn’t see your finest “Reverie”
movie at Canon.com. Please let me know how to see it.
youtube is best for now.
Can’t wait for Reverie to be viewed. The “Behind the Scenes” gave me a good laugh, getting caught up in the action.
Fantastic output still, and kudos to Vincent LaForet and his crew for their creativity and dexterity.
Does anyone know which Moby song(s?) is featured on the Behind the Scenes?
Cheers –
Geez I wish people would stop saying “Full HD” and/or 1080 without telling us about frame rates or interlacing. 1080p@30fps – if that’s what it did – is *half* the rate of “Full HD”…
Hey Vincent – how come there’s a dead pixel mid-frame in some shots, but not others.
Looks like they loaned you *two* cameras – or there’s something you’re forgetting to tell us about what really went on ?
Really enjoyed your video shot with the canon 5D MKII. Looks great. I just to do some photography, but at the moment more into Digital filmmaking. Very low budget. To keep a nice DOF and perspective, I always shoot with the help of the P+S mini35 and 35mm Zeiss filmlenses. In Brasil, “Show de Bola” is now in the cinemas.
But the DOF with the 5D MKII is even nicer. Hope canon will stick that CMOS chip etc in a Canon XL like body.
I do have a question though. Is there any kind of TIMECODE, shootng with the 5D MKII??
I’m shure you will have a billion emails, so it might take a while before you get to my mail.
Hope it will be before the end of the year.
Have to shoot a feature movie in Spain soon. Really start thinking to do it with the 5D MKII. These new Zeiss ZE lenses look very nice to use for film as well.
Best regards, Arie.

This camera is awesome! Finally, I was able to check out a (pre-production) unit.
why the iso is set up so high for the movie shot?
Hello…
Sorry if I am being thick! But I am trying to watch the full movie and it’s saying that there is too much demand for it!! Is there another way or am I doing it wrong?

wooops! he nearly fell out!
I can’t believe he film that clips with a camera…. Very nicely edited.
Kudos to Vincent and to the camera. I dont think most people can produce something that nice.
Thanks Vincent, for showing us the capability of this incredible Camera.
Excellent Work, imagine the possibilities with all these SLR Lenses, Filters ..etc.
what’s next Varible Shutter speed ” Slow motion”?
Does anybody know when will Canon release the camera?
Thank you!
wow! nice movie!
Great work! I am glad to see the video back online… my page talking about the video now points to the right location…
Absolutely stunning!
I only wish I could afford this camera. It is amazing. Also I love how creative you were making this short movie. I love the blue light cast from the TV. Using the slider to make it flash, Great stuff! Could you please send me information on how you were able to upload the making of the movie to the host service. I cannot seem to find the upload link at the host. Again good stuff I have been inspired! Now to just find enough money to get the camera. I may have to use a cybershot instead!
a question
does anybody know if, when live view is enabled, is possible to mirror the live view on to an external monitor via av or hdmi output.
this should be really useful
24p + 25p forever
ps
thank you mr Laforet for your video
i’ve saw other demo video on other sites like dpreview or luminous-landscapes and they are really crap. They simply doesn’t show the possible applications of the new 5d in pro video issues and what does it means for the evolution of the sector (redone camera seem old stuff now expecially for high iso performance, cropped sensor size and prices).
what about timecode for the video? how does that work?
it’s truly amazing
I’m no professional at film but I was checking out the possible rolling shutter effects on the sidewalk lamps/lights while he was driving. I couldn’t see anything. Maybe someone who is a pro with proper editing software can try to slice up a scene that has extensive motion?
Anyway, I’m a photographer first but it would be fun to get creative with video/film too! I’m pretty sure I’m going to buy this camera and put my 30D away for sports photography.

Actually, I noticed bend in some of the moving shots but it was hard to tell if this was from the specific lens he was using or if it was truly rolling shutter (or a combination of both).
Also, thanks again for posting this Vincent! It really did help me make a decision as I have been sitting on the fence.
Vincent
Reverie was great ! Love its low light ability. Have pre-ordered
Could you tell me the brand of suction clamp you used on the car ?
Best
Jay
I would just like to say this is a great video and it has made my wallet shiver at the thought of possibly buying this camera!
a very piece of art… remember me for lights and feeling “a dream long one day” of Francis Ford Coppola.
simply stunning!!!!
Great job, Vincent and Co!
Just out of curiosity, what happens when you hit the 4GB limit (or duration of 12min or so)? Does it automatically start a new clip? Is there a deplay? and if so, how long is it? Or does it wait for you to start a new clip manually?
deplay –> delay 🙂
Stunning video…I can’t wait to see more of your work with this camera!
Amazing images coming from this camera! I can’t believe how stunning the pictures look at night. This blows my canon XL2 low light visuals away! Maybe the next version of the XL or A1 will come with this CMOS sensor!!! Ummm….
Vincent, I threw together a 5D site that simply displays many of the articles written about the 5D Mark II, kind of a launch pad to all other sites. I have yours listed a few times. Is that OK? I’m NEW at website building and don’t know all the web etiquette yet.

Thanks,
Paul
Simply amazing.

Excellent !
Congratulations !
Hi Vincent, I was just wondering what type of gyro you used to stabalize the camera when you did the helicopter scenes? What the 5D teathered to a laptop so you could frame the shots or did you somehow look through the viewfinder?
Many thanks
Vincent! Video mode in 5D Mark II is 1080i?

The camera is a genie and Laforet is a genius.
It’s ok. It feels more like a commercial for perfume than art, but it does show that still photographers can dispense with video cameras and use the camera form that they are familiar with to create moving images from this point on.
So the 1080p version hasn’t been released yet? I’d love to watch this in high-def glory
http://www.usa.canon.com/dlc/controller?act=GetArticleAct&articleID=2326
At first what I thought the video was going to be a gimmick feature I was still excited about the camera. After seeing what you can do with it I am beyond amazed now.
My question is about one scene though. When he’s laying there with the TV on, is the TV really the only light source? Obviously your lenses are super high quality but I thought for sure that scene was specially lit but I couldn’t see anything else in scene but the TV.
Does anyone know if the contradiction between the claims of Chuck Westfall of Canon and Vincent have been resolved? Canon’s Chuck Westfall claims that there is ZERO direct control over any specific exposure settings, including aperture. But Vincent says the camera he used allowed him to set the aperture or shutter speed.
Vincent:
“you can shoot in Aperture priority – you set the Aperture and the camera chooses between 1/125th of a second or 1/60th of a second – and then it’s main control is the ISO
“you can shoot in shutter priority mode- set the shutter speed ( I think only 1′/60th and 1/125th of a second would be option here) and the camera sets the aperture and ISO for you…”
Chuck Westfall, Canon:
“Since the EOS 5D Mark II controls ISO, shutter speed and aperture value automatically in movie mode, there is no direct user control over these settings. The best way to force a wide aperture is to shoot in low light or with an ND filter. The best way to force a low ISO is to shoot in bright light. It’s not realistic to expect that you’ll be able to force the combination of wide aperture and low ISO at the same time in movie mode with the 5D Mark II. There is no ‘program shift’ in movie mode with the 5D Mark II to adjust the settings the camera picks. However, it is definitely possible to apply exposure compensation and AE lock in movie mode to override the camera’s automatic adjustments to a reasonable extent.”
Also, Canon:
“The following settings are made automatically by the camera and cannot be adjusted by the user:
ISO speed
Shutter speed (from 1/30 to 1/125)
Aperture (varies according to lens; no arbitrary restrictions)”
If Vincent is correct, there is a path to get f/1.4, shutter 1/60, and ISO 100 for a daylight close-up, for example. A very typical shot — a CU with b.g. blur. But if Westfall is correct, you’ll never get that shot. The iris will likely not open up wide until the ISO has gone into noise territory.
There’s a mile of difference between directly controlling one variable and directly controlling none. It’s huge.
Westfall says none. Vincent says one.
Which is it?

this camera is amazing, im like super amateur at picture photography, i use a standard def camera and make short films like this but when i decided to go HD, this video prety much made me instantly into picture photography and this camera and how id use it for still photos and HD video
Hi, Vincent
Great Job, flexible and deep picture…
And EF Lenses are superb
But small thing seems rather imporant – one bad pixel on CMOS..
It was first shooting of You with Canon 5D Mark II and you’ve got bad pixel (right down quater of picture) at the end of shooting or in the middle as it seems to me… because in some episodes it isn’t appears
Strange happenning with the new DSLR…
I just was thinkin’ about getting Canon 5D
Completely empty. How am I supposed to feel after watching this?
I feel like I just watched a long commercial for consumer culture.
Amazing video, I have been using the 5d for 2 years now to do HDR photos http://www.photoserge.com, I cant wait to buy the new version !
Serge
no storyline, lots of compression artifacts, too videolike. the city that illuminates itself is less than michael mann achieved years ago with collateral.
Amazing job of creative content, more unbeliveable
is that it was shot with the Canon5D Mark II. We have been in the film and video production business for over 40 years. My back would be in great shape today if the camera was avilable then. Thank you
You know, if you ever need a kidney, let me know, i wouldn’t mind trading you one for that camera and those lenses. Especially the lenses.

INCREDIBLE
Прикольно! Только все-равно глупо снимать на фотоаппарат, для этого есть видеокамеры.
Wow, that’s great.
From what I’ve been able to figure, the 5d II cannot lock down the exposure. It will shift if you pan from a bright scene to a dark scene. Am I wrong?
Thank You
Amazing video. The 5D MKII will change everything. Canon has done it again and that’s why I choose them for my wedding and portrait studio in Vancouver.
You can control the exposure, just hit the info button and you’ll be given a way to control the exposure.

Absolutely Amazing. It just about gave me chills. Even though we all have access to this camera, the person who produced this is obviously a professional and it shows….
It sure would be great to see the full Reverie at 1920×1080. The only full-length version is mid-res at 1280×720. Vincent, can you please put the full HD version up on SmugMug?
Truly a work of art as is your recent “The Cabbie”. I have been inspired to create some of my own shorts with the 5D Mk II. The latest has just been posted on my blog, http://www.gatesman.com/blog
Superb blog, numerous fascinating information. I remember 7 of days ago, I have visited a similar blog.
Stunning video and thank you so much for making the behind the scenes footage available.

Thanks for your outline. I enjoy see clearly Martha
wow, that was amazing!
Having worked as both a filmmaker and now as a photographer, I definitely stumbled, technically, when I first started shooting weddings with flash, although it helped that I’m friendly, connect well with people, and have no problems bossing people around. I was used to working in a way every shot is planned, logged, and lit with studio lights ahead of time, where there was the time to make adjustments. I would say that if you’re going to shoot weddings, it actually takes a lot more expertise than Elizabeth mentions (at least to be really good, and to make a living at it). It’s very fast, high-pressure, and you have to really be great with choosing your settings/lenses/accessories on the fly. You’ve also got to be a nice person, with good social skills, great manners, and ability to really connect with people – as well as being able to attend weddings over & over again without getting cynical.
Woohoo!
great!
I have made my way around this blog and I myst say that I am quite impressed with the work. Great work Vincent!!
