Video to go LIVE within the next 12 Hours
I just received confirmation from Canon: “barring any last minute technical difficulties” the video will be live within the next 12 hours… Â (I will link to it from this Blog)Â
SmugMug has stepped up to the plate as well – and they’ve agreed to host the “Behind The Scenes” video on their servers at no cost… so this site will remain advertising-free as a result (I don’t need to raise cash to pay for bandwidth as a result of their generous offer).
There is also a pretty incredible announcement coming up from them on this blog… within the next hour or so… Â One that almost trumps the release of this video in my opinion- an announcement that you all have a chance to benefit from…
If you choose to subscribe via RSS to this blog – you’ll be the first to hear of it and the release… Â my life has been on hold for almost a week – so I’m eager to get this out! Â Â We’ve gotten over 250,000 hits on this blog since Saturday – and the numbers just keep rolling in.Â
For now – enjoy this 12 second clip “teaser” of the behind the scenes video  – to be launched simultaneously with the “Reverie” film… Â
WITHIN THE NEXT TWELVE HOURS…
Â
The problem’s probably on my end, but I saw this announcement through your blog site — RSS still isn’t picking it up (for me, using Firefox in Wondows). Can’t wait for the next 60 minutes to pass…
Vincent
The Behind The Scenes were shot with 5d mk II ?
Been on Smugmug as a charter member and cannot recommend it more.
Great choice Vincent.

This is so cool!!
…still waiting though 🙂
Waiting on the edge of my seat…
This may prove to be the best $5,000 investment you’ve ever made.
Is this pending announcement coming from Canon or Smugmug?
… Looks really cool ! Now we have to start the count-down ….
“… so this site will remain advertising-free as a result

Of course, except for this advertising right here.
The Behind the scenes footage was NOT shot w/ the 5D MKII – I only had one… it was shot w/ a video camera and makes for a very interesting comparison… more to come on that…
Yepp!
Let SMUGMUG be Your choice!
I have to give it to those guys. They were quick to hook up. Very smart & good marketing.
“Really? No Ads?” – Don’t be a smart ass… would you rather see the video and this site PLASTERED with ads? As I mentioned – there is another announcement coming about a future collaboration between SmugMug and myself…
I think I will hook up to Smugmug
Whooohoooo… waiting impatiently 😀

Very exciting! As someone who has this camera on pre-order…I’m very interested to see its video performance in the hands of a skilled pro.
On YouTube they’re already calling it fake. Oh dear… this is going to get interesting. =)
You sure know how to get people excited!!
Cool!
Thanks Vincent for doing all this!
Lots of people have been wondering about this new camera. Some think the video feature is lame gadgetry, but I could think of so many useful things to do with it. Especially if it works well…
Really look forward to seeing what you’ve done. Even though it will probably lead to the camera being on back order till January 🙂
@ Jason
Where did you pre-order from?
Does “an announcement that you all have a chance to benefit from” = Rebate???
camera ordered…your still pictures from this short movie are stunning…i’m already 15th in the waiting list at the shop (a big big shop)
Chrissy – do you have a link for the youtube “fake” calling…? I have all of the raw footage and more 6 witnesses… nothing is hidden or a lie – not a single statement – so I’ll take anyone on to the challenge…
Wow! That’s what I mean by Internet Democracy! Can’t wait for the video.
here is the link…

I can’t wait for these videos and the camera even more so!
I know you’ve been talking a lot about video, and I’m completely hyped up about it, but did you get a chance to shoot any stills in the little time you had with the beast? I’d like to know your impressions.
Thanks and good luck with the video launch!
Vincent – follow the link Tom posted.
“christhekiwi12 (4 hours ago)
what a load of rubbish. You can say all you want about this fake video but you aint going to fool me”
Sorry, didn’t mean to come off as such a smart ass. I agree with you; it is _great_ that SmugMug has agreed to host the video in exchange for a plug here. But a plug is no less an advertisement than a banner is.
They’re not hosting it out of a sense of philanthropy; they’re driving customers to their site, and you’re able to serve your video without paying for bandwidth. Everybody wins. It’s still advertising 🙂
Looking good, I can’t wait to see the whole video.
Vincent, did you get to see your short film projected at HD in a private screening room yet? If so how does it look? Also, have you had any film folks (DP’s, cameramen, editors etc) see this and make any comments about its quality compared to some of the pro HD cameras on the market?
I’m really hoping Canon include a real 24p mode for the 5D mark II. Cheers for your efforts in not only putting all of this together, but also in pushing Canon to share this as well.
Exciting times!
Vincent – Kind you give us some info on storage usage for the video? 12 min of HD footage is approx 4GB?
Looks like the video is no longer available on the YouTubes. Did you melt it?!
“Really? No Ads” True – no worries – cool.
I think that the video being called a “fake” is a strange sort of compliment… brings a smile to my face to be honest… I have all of the RAW stuff here – so I have zero worries… things are moving very smoothly btw… the test site and video are already up…. just a matter of last minute testing… we’ve already gotten 104,000 people today so far since midnight… so I hope those servers hold up… I’m not too worried given that both SmugMug and Canon will host it on Akamai – they do all of Apple’s iTunes stuff… we should be in good hands.
I wouldn’t spend a second worrying about internet trolls… Seems the WWW is full of experts.
Thats why it’s really cool a true professional is posting their work. Still going to be plenty of nay sayers after it comes out, but it gives the “almost” sane people like me something to look at and aspire for, study, and enjoy.
I know all the negativity got to me over the last week… Went from buying a 50D to a 5D MK II to a refurbed 1d MK III, back to the 5D MK II. Finally decided to take a serious look at what I do, what I need and what I want. And stopped reading the boards (Or trying to… They seem to be a bad addiction.)
My 20D has served me well for 4 years, even surviving rain storms and snow with some duct tape (really lucky I think). I’m looking forward to an upgrade, and I hope the 5D MK II is it… At the very least I wouldn’t need the duct tape this winter.
Very neat behind the scenes footage. Looks awesome. What kind of car mounts did you guys use?
Yeah I was thinking that – must be nice if people just refuse to beleive it – a compliment indeed.
Many thanks for all this info Vincent – must take effort to reply to so many posts! Nice work 🙂
I’d just like to say cheers for putting this up, it’s very much appreciated!
By the way, your enthusiasm for the camera is so evident that I went ahead and pre-ordered one yesterday, based only on your prediction that it would be back-ordered for a year. I’m not even planning to shoot video with it! So you’re a very effective advertiser for the 5DmkII whether you intend it or not.
Looking forward to the videos.
Can’t wait to see the video Vincent. Although the 5Dmk2 is out of my price range, it is the precursor for what will come to the lower end of Canon’s line in the future.
Also, props to Smugmug for offering their bandwidth. I’ve been a fan of them for a while now and have been using them for my photos.
Will the movie contain sharp moving images of Bigfoot? The suspense is killing me. I hope this isn’t another big hoax… the hype and ‘wait and see’ is getting suspicious. :^D
As much as Smug Mug aren’t offering their services out of complete altruism it’s hard not to see that they’re as caught up in the enthusiasm and expectation surrounding this camera and this video as everyone else. Criticising them for trying to cash in on this opportunity seems churlish to me. I’ve never visited the Smug Mug site before, I still haven’t, but I appreciate their participation in the spirit it’s given.
The YouTube video sure looked like it was a video of a Mac Book showing your video… Sure you don’t have a mole on your team?
You have actually piqued my interest in the 5D Mark II. I actually was disappointed with the 3.9FPS and was hoping that it would have been more in the 6FPS range of the 50D and the fact that Canon went with a new battery that didn’t match either the XXD line or the 1D line. If they felt the change was necessary, I would have like to see them make the 50D with the new battery as well….
Michael Reichmann of Luminous-Landscaoe joins the party:
http://www.luminous-landscape.com/reviews/cameras/5dmkiipre.shtml
Yeah, I’m with Buck. The hype has fizzled. As intense as the anticipation for this camera has been, it would have been better to keep quiet until it could actually be shown. No matter how cool this camera is, it can’t live up to the hype at this point. What could have been a “WOW” is now going to be a “that’s nice, but I can’t believe everyone got so stirred up.”
Guess it’s my own fault for getting sucked in…
It’s funny how Mr. Reichmann can’t get his facts right: he writes “1080i” (instead of 1080p) and “47 Mbps” (instead of 38.6 Mpbps)…
Vincent:
I see 3 avenger pump cups; what I’m wondering is how many magic arms did you use for that contraption and what’s the part that secures the magic arms to the cup?
@ Buck and Jeremy,
I would cut Vincent a little more slack. First, he put up 5K of his own money to do this project with no backing or guarantee from Canon or anyone else, other than they agreed to let him borrow a Camera for 48 Hours.
Even if he posted this early to create a sensation in order to convince Canon or someone else to help him get this out to the public, I don’t see a problem with that. There is a definite interest in seeing what this camera can do, and by using a bottom – up, groundswell approach, Vincent will be able to get this out there. I think that the benefit of the doubt and some patience can be afforded to him.
It didn’t make any sense to compress the movie all the way down to YouTube size, or even the size of the sample videos that Canon posted, because then you wouldn’t be able to see what the quality actually is.
If the files are as large as they are supposed to be, then there are definite technological hurdles that need to be overcome. What good is it if you see a thumbnail sized video of something that may look stunning on your 52in HDTV.
How did you find the 5Dii for stills? Were the 9 tightly clustered focus points a problem? If not, why not please?
Thanks 🙂
Vincent – Will you be putting some of the rushes up? I would really like to test a native file to see how FCP deals with multiple tracks and how the h264 color depth handles some pulling about in colour correction
Vincent,
How did you manage the datafiles of the video? Did you emptied you CF Card after each shot?
don’t worry vincent, i stuck up for ya on the “fake” thing…i’m the guy who posted twice to call the guy on it, once linking directly to your blog 😉
vincent, your budget of 5k – you mentioned canon didn’t have a budget for your test film. did you fork over five big ones just for the sake of testing out the camera?
@BorekL
err and how do you know it is 1080p not 1080i?
both photographers got a preproduction model, so whos to say which one got it right – cos it sure doesnt say on canon’s official specs!!!
and theres no reason to be so snarley lol chill!
Super coool!!!!!!!
omg where is it already
Thanks for all the info Vincent! I’ve been keeping tabs on your blogs and you have been very generous with your time.
I have been geting ready to shoot a web series early next year and we had been hoping to use the Canon if the video rumors turned out to be true… which they did and then some!
This looks to be a great tool , looking forward to using L glass for motion work. I had 2 questions:
Is it possible to monitor video live via hdmi?
Did you notice any issues with the auto ISO and ASA causing inconsistencys in the look of different clips?
cheers, Adam

OK – so it’s 23:30 in the UK – time for bed – looking forward to catching the film tomorrow – may have to show everyone at work too 😉
The only hosting site that I’ve run across that does hd over the net with decent results is vimeo. Maybe they could host the full hd version. I’d like to see it as well.
I can not remember the last time so much pre-release tension was created without the artificial hype of a marketing team of 1000 behind it! All for FREE…Canon, I think, will be handing you out browny points for the next 5 years Vincent.
I also found a great mic to go on top of the 5DMK2, any opinions anyone?
http://www.cameragrip.co.uk/acatalog/info_468.html
Looking forward to the vid.
Rod
It’s a little trippy to see that DSLR mounted on the hood knowing that it’s shooting 1080p video.
Just so you know I’m not NUTS:
Here’s a good review from a great site:http://www.luminous-landscape.com/reviews/cameras/5dmkiipre.shtml
Just so I can KEEP UP – THIS THREAD IS CLOSED… GO to the most recent one… (we’ll do this from now on) I do get every comment e-mailed to me – but there are simply too many to keep up – v
Vincent,I’m a 65 year old amature, rebel XT,just to help you understand. I’m trying to pick up the continuation of your responses on this exciting 5D MarkII and i’m having a problem finding the new thread. Thanks for an exciting blog and it’s great to “feel” your enthusiasm for this wonderful new product, wish I could afford one too ;). Good luck,Steve B.
Steve Buckley: it’s here for you.
https://blog.vincentlaforet.com/2008/09/22/smug-mug-commits-to-sponsor-next-film/#comments
Thanks Rod,I’m a bit embarrased what with all this techno talk going on and i’m like a little old man lost in a giant bustling departement store, thanks again. Steve B.
hehe, don’t worry, i’m not that old by half, but I sometimes get lost too…it all moves so fast!
I like the ‘bustling department store’ metaphor – I sometimes think the internet should come with a ‘lost persons’ button – maybe they could put a virtual call out over the store Tannoy to anyone who knows you to come and help 🙂
@ChrissyOne
I pre-ordered from Amazon on the 17th. They’re no longer accepting pre-orders. My guess is they have enough to sell their first shipment. I hear people are having luck with some smaller camera shops.
I dont know if guys out there are informed about what happened at Red after the realese of this new Mark II. All rigth… They were planning a realese of a 3k video camera on late 2009 since few month already and a DSMC (digital still & movie camera). In the 1st week of september they came out with some news in the forum about this dsmc, before canon univels the new 5D. After that their plans have completely changed whithin two weeks!!! They are going to merge the 3k video camera and the Dsmc in one unit this is going to be a must-have-tech-toy!!I will rather wait for that..
You know what I will still shot analog..
Hey Mr.Laforet hope u liked the blog!!!!
http://www.framedblog.com and teaser http://www.framedvideo.com
The luminous Landscape footage is great, and He said most was shot at very high iso,and it’s clear that it’s raining in much of the footage. I’m not hip to live view focusing,is it possible to change focus while filming,he showed us the advantage of depth of field but i didn’t see change of focus,is it me or is this difficult to do/ Steve B.
Rod: sennheiser is one of the biggest names in audio recording. i don’t know about this mic specifically, but with a name like senn it’s hard to see where this would be anything but a very good mic for hotshoe mounting
Alessandro Rosa, just a quick note based on your reply above… I was just jesting, my friend. But it does sorta remind me of the whole Bigfoot thing… you know… we have the footage, but you will have to wait… this is gonna blow you away… footage to come soon… stay tuned… :Þ
But don’t worry, I love Canon (I shoot Canon) and I appreciate the efforts of the parties involved. I know Canon delivers.
Just so I can KEEP UP – THIS THREAD IS CLOSED… GO to the most recent one… (we’ll do this from now on) I do get every comment e-mailed to me – but there are simply too many to keep up – v
I also want to try using the low light capabilities of the new Canon 5D MkII I do a lot of night time videography and have trouble because of low light conditions. I video drum circles, full moon parties and poolside fashion shows always in the night with limited light. example of drum circles below by bonfire:
http.vitalstreamcdn.com/littledirector_vitalstream_com/Movies/System/DrumCircle480x320v03.wmv
illusion in photographs, I would be gladly once thereby
After viewing your film and the behind the scenes footage… I have placed my order!
Quick question… can you please provide a link to the car hood mount that you used?
Best regards,
Alonso
Hi
Super
What about direct sound.
Thinking on doing documentary film and photography altogether.
Does the camera have direct sound or connections?
Thanks for answering
Robert
