Shane Hurlbut’s HDDSLR BOOTCAMP
[vimeo video_id=”12951892″ width=”700″ height=”398″ title=”Yes” byline=”Yes” portrait=”Yes” autoplay=”No” loop=”No” color=”00adef”]I know that many of you who read this blog regularly are interested in learning opportunities and workshops, so I thought I would pass this along…
My friend and fellow Explorer of Light, Shane Hurlbut, ASC, is putting on an HDDSLR Bootcamp on August 28th and 29th in Los Angeles. The two day course is pricey at $3250.00 – but you’ll get what you pay for. Shane has spent the last year and a half running around with these cameras and perfecting his technique and workflow. During that time he even shot a feature film – “Act of Valor” – entirely on HDDSLRs.
The bootcamp is designed as a crash course in all things that Shane and his team have learned over the past year and a half of HDDSLR production. It aims to educate others how to turn these prosumer cameras into something capable of shooting motion pictures. Shane is a true believer in this technology (what he has coined as “digital film”), and its a rare opportunity to be able to learn from someone of his experience.
**UPDATE – Shane is graciously offering a discount of 40% on the bootcamp to all of my readers – bringing the price down to $1950.00! If you are interested – email Lydia@hurlbutvisuals.com with the subject: BOOTCAMP – LAFORET DISCOUNT**

Vincent,
3250.00 or 325.00!?!? NO WAY I get 3250.00 in 2 days. I truly appreciate everything you do and share for people just learning or getting better at what they do, but 3250 for 2 days? If he teaches me to poop gold, then I might sign up, but other than that…

@Shane Hurlbut,
Thanks, Shane!!! Best of luck with the bootcamp!
🙂
If I had the cash I’d do it. Shane is the MOST dynamic person I’ve ever heard talk about the 5D. He just inspires you to get out and put this camera through it’s paces. In my opinion, to learn from him, you’re learning from the very best when it comes to the 5D. The Case Tractor spot…AWESOME!!
Shane, the workshop pricing is a steal! Professional training for most industries is within that range and much higher! My last iPhone bootcamp was $6k +.
The 40% discount works for which individuals?

@Makea, It works for all of you. Contact Lydia@hurlbutvisuals.com and say that you read the Laforet Blog and she will give you the code. Peace
Hmmm, should I buy a 1DMKIV or fly to LA and attend this workshop. The camera would probably end up being cheaper! Ooops, I forgot, I am out of discretionary income this month!

@Caribefatboy, Don’t bother buying the 1D, come to the bootcamp
Ouch…. A tad bit pricey? I understand the value of education (heck, I’m a full time college student!) but I don’t know what I could learn in 2 days that would justify the price of a brand new 5d mark ii, a zacuto eyepiece thingy, a sweet tripod and head, and still money in the bank.
It’s one thing if I worked for a big corporation and I could just pass the bill off to ‘the man’, but as an individual and small business owner that’s a lot of ching.
Funny thing though – while this is probably the most expensive training I’ve heard of for a 2 day session, he will probably sell out on spots.
But seriously, for $3,250 I’d rather take a 2 week seminar in Italy, Greece, Africa, or wherever.
Wooftah…
good post, like it
Shane, are there any plans for a bootcamp in October? I can’t make this one since I’m overseas but I’m down for one in the fall!!!

@Michael, sorry Michael this will be a one time event in Los Angeles.
Shane- just wondering how many spots are left? I am seriously considering this now with the discount…
Thanks,
Eric

@Eric Stracke, Hi Eric, it was half full the last time I checked, but then we had 5 people just sign up. I would love to see you. I hope it works out. Peace
S
I just signed up and will be flying over there from Iceland. Shane gave me the encouragement to go fully HDSLR and now the opportunity to have hands on and get teachings from the guy is something I do not want to miss 😉

@Arnar V., Thank you so much for signing up, you will not believe what The Elite Team members and I have planned. We have all of the high end Hollywood vendors showing up. The Hurlbut Visuals HDSLR bootcamp will feel like a private NAB for 40 select Platoon team members. Bring your A game, it is on.
best wishes!
This sounds like an amazing opportunity! I just got off the waiting list and am looking forward to attending! (haven’t gotten heads or tails response about the discount code yet).
@Shane, I founded my University’s television station on HDSLR filmmaking thanks to you (and Vincent and Bloom). I hope what I learn will help take our game to the next level.
Found this on cinema5d and it speaks my mind to a T
“I will start by saying i was immediately underwhelmed when i saw another “boot camp” was on the horizon. These guys have to come up with better names for their workshops…
But more importantly, am i the only one that thinks it is ridiculous that Shane Hurlbut is charging $3250 per person for his 2 day SLR workshop? And for some reason only offers a 40% discount to “select working pros” or whatever.
We can sit here and laugh about Zacuto pricing all day long but this takes the cake. With 40 slots, he stands to bring in $130,000 (minus operating cost) for the weekend on whoever is foolish enough to take the leap. I could be missing something, but how could this be worth it for a working pro. It’s not an absurb amount of money in the big scheme of things if it actually were to reinvent you as an artist, but from his little discription video it seems like a good majority of it will be spent “demystifying” the dslr movement. Which is a load of crap and code for “saving you a lot of time on cinema5d and other sources of technical information”. What i think might be cool would be for those of us who have limited experience with big budget productions and high caliber systems to see a big pros workflow. But since its apparently targeted at pros, i just dont think they will be nearly as stoked on learning the nuts and bolts of his operation. For them it will likely be very similar to they way they work, but with an SLR rather than a more traditional means of acquisition.
Again, I could be missing the point but where the eff does he come off.
Seriously… wtf”
Hmmm, should I buy a 1DMKIV or fly to LA and attend this workshop. The camera would probably end up being cheaper! Ooops, I forgot, I am out of discretionary income this month!
No dobut like many, the cost of a two day seiminar is beyond my means. Even if it wasn’t beyond my means, I doubt that I would feel I got my moneys worth. I can buy alot of camera, lenses, software for that kind of money.
On the other hand, if the seiminar was affordable to me, that it would also be affordable to you, which means that it would be overrun with applicants. I can only hope that Shane will take the content of this seminar or others like it and make it available as an instructional dvd or download. We miss out on the hands on personal instruction, but gain much of the core knowledge.
There is no substitute for experience, but sometimes we can use instructional dvd and then do hands on at home, we miss out on the feedback, but win in the end. I am currently reading a book that mentions this blog and that Shane wrote the into too that is the best book and instruction I have received so far.
I am disappointed that I will not be able to afford or benefit from the boot camp, but I would encourge Shane to make an instructional video of the boot camp content and so vicariously we can learn and do hands on at home.
So, I hope others will put a little sugar on this subject and instead of lamenting what we cannot have, encourge Shane to benefit from another economic opportunithy.
As a side note, years ago I studied knife forging with Wayne Goddard of Eugene Or. Wayne was and still is considered the West Coast master of forged blades. Now, I can describe in detail what Wayne does, but I cannot do what Wayne does, because I have not done the work, no shortcut to experience. In the Bootcamp they are buying Shane’s time and opinion of their video. So it is not just generic instruction of benefit to all, but personal instruction of benefit to a person.
The price speaks to Shane’s celebrity and hard work and accomplishments.
I would be glad to host a workshop on my acreage in Belfair, WA.
Think about the possibilities available, not opportunities lost
