Chase Jarvis Panel at Photo Plus
Last weekend I had the pleasure of sitting down in on a panel during Chase Jarvis’ talk at Photo Plus in New York City. Chase gave a great talk, but what was even cooler is that he invited a number of different photographer’s up on stage for a discussion on “The New Creativity and the Social Art of Photography” – panelists included Zack Arias, Jasmine Star, Rob Haggart, Joey Lawrence, and myself. I enjoyed being a part of this talk very much, and I hope that you will find it interesting. Chase’s entire talk is embedded above, and the around the 25 minute mark the panel begins.
Also 25 BONUS POINTS to whoever can tell me how the below video was shot – the angle and smoothness are astounding. Post your thoughts in the comments section!

Hot air balloon and a really good gyro?
It was shot from the side of a cruise ship. It’s a very nice little idea.
RC Chopper?
RC Chopper or cruise ship. I’m leaning towards the latter.
timelapse
paraglider.
with a steadicam?
nah i dispute all above and say Vincent and Eric Kessler have something new up their sleeve – the 2mile airslider.
It seems to me like Heli either real or RC and is it Tilt shift cause those boats looks real toy like!
But a lil diggin: Low Fly of Venice Italy was shot with a Canon 5D Mark II, 16-35 L 2.8 lens. The full video was shot hand held with a RedRock Micro Captain Stubling rig.
Shot from a helium balloon being towed from a boat running North East on the Tronchetto-Lido di Venezia with DSLR camera in time lapse.
Vince being an aerial photographer I have to say, a helicopter and a slider connected to a glidecam. I’d probably have to do 2 rounds of p90x before carrying any of that equipment that long. HAHAHA
it was sped up 3x so thats why the boats look so toy like. My vote is a heli. or the first of its kind 2 mile long slider.
Those boaters are crazy. Check out the maneuver at 1:27.
I’ll vote for the cruise ship idea. If you watch the video but look only at the rooftops, you’ll notice a gently but rhythmic up and down, which seems like it would be from the gentle rolling of the ship.
i read it’s done handheld. if that’s the case, it must be from the side of a cruise ship then.
if you slow down the video to real speed, the speed would be close to that of a cruise ship.

@Gecho, If its done handheld then the only possible way is for the photographer to be towed through the air by boat and parachute (Spanish holiday style).
I think a cruise ship is not an option because the camera is too high and the height of the camera varies as it goes along.
My initial reaction was RC heli Nikon FF 14mm controlled from a moving boat below.
by the way, awesome clip
Definitely shot from a cruise ship and sped up. It’s very bizarre to be there in front of the Doge Palace, looking out at the water and see a giant cruise ship floating past, seems so out of place with all the ancient stuff around you.
It’s a Miniature/Model set?
lol
I think maybe a cable car?
gondola?
Swiss Guy with Little wings and rockets?
The whole thing is done in Photoshop 🙂
Rail Tram?
Seems obvious. Superman bought a HDDLR…

by F9photo.com.”
nice.
cable cam.
As much as I like the cruise ship idea, I don’t think any of those boats would get that close. Especially the one that looks like it’s about to cross in front of the “cruise ship”.
I going with the RC flying device, but I got a feeling is something totally unexpected
KAP, kite aerial photography – towed behind a speed boat
It is wit a HANDHELD RIG, BUT HE BEING DRAGGED BY A BOAT WITH PARACHUTE!
Vincent, check out these guys because i have feeling it is something like this helikite http://www.allsopphelikites.com
It was hand held, probably along the Giudecca Canal 🙂
Well its not shot in real time, so maybe on a cruise ship and tracked in AE, The main boat speeds almost out of shot so if it was a Hele shot it could have kept up. so the speed of the tracking shot was fixed. Cruise ship with camera on mast or just held high up and tracked in AE.
Shot from cruiship.
It’s a cruise ship, very nice if it’s handheld. Haight variation is from the ship rolling.
Watch this if you don’t think they get that close to Venice: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BRCisU6PkOw
They did the same thing in Van Diemen’s Land. All the shots that look like they’re from a heli are just a tripod on the roof of a tourist river cruise: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fmOxahBjl0Y
You post has too “Zack Arias” in a row and one links back to your site :/
Thanks for all your hard work bringing us this content.

A kite towed from a boat – think along the lines of a kiteboarding kite.
judging by the motion of the buildings moving up and down smoothly camera may have been mounted on a ship some where high. time lapse look seems too smooth so i think it was shot something like 720p with 60fps and speed up on post to get that look. lens could of been tele tilt shift to get that compressed and toy look on boats.
I am quiet certain its timelapse with camera set onto some pillar/pole on a cruise ship or a bigger vessel
A Paraglider pulled by a boat.
Yes its a cruise for sure.
OK – so what I love about this is how simply it was done – and how so many of us jump to the idea of helicopters, cable-cams etc right away… let that be a lesson to us all:
Carson (F9Photo.com) shot this resting on the handrail of a cruise ship – HANDHELD for the entire length of that sequence. No support, no tripod, no bean bag, no helicopter, no Red Rock Micro Nano rig…. just patience and simplicity – the resulting video clip (shot w/ a Canon 5D MKII in video mode) was sped up 3X in iMovie… ‘nuf said… K.I.S.S. – one of my favorite acronyms…: Keep It Simple Stupxxxxx cheers – v

@VincentLaforet Vince,
Thank but it was shot with the new super secret AirSlider by Kessler Crane.
Just kidding, I enjoyed seeing all the posts for the how people thought it was shot. I shot the video hand held using a Canon 5D mark II hand held with a 16-35 2.8L II USM. The lens was set at 35mm. It was shot at 30 FPS because the 5D firmware update did not exist yet. I shot the low fly Venice (http://www.vimeo.com/13969174) from the balcony of the Celebrity X Cruise ship from my room hand help bracing on the side of the railing and wall.
The shot was down the Giudecca Canal past the Piazza San Marco and St Mark’s Basilica (Basilica di San Marco in Italian). The raw shot of the canal spanned 4 files and was 17:38 in total length. I edit the file down to the main Plaza and sped it up 3 times in post. No other editing or stabilization was done (I did cut out the times my hand got tired and shook the frame). I also removed the audio of me complaining that my hand was cramping. I did not have a tripod and was traveling light for the trip.
I used the same technique in Dubrovnik Croatia http://www.vimeo.com/13977866

@Vincent Laforet, Well as much as I hate being called stupid!
This time you got my attention!!
But MR.Laforet, you will never call me stupid again!
That I can Guarantee.
Well maybe not Guarantee, but I will avoid falling into your traps 🙂
I was going to say Colonel Mustard with the candlestick in the library, but I was wrong.
Amazingly steady for handheld and on a boat no less!
Luckily that boat could stop on a dime. They were close to colliding at the end there!
Thanks for posting Vincent and reminding us how you can have a professional production without professional equipment!
And in EVEN MORE DETAIL from Carson: shot the video hand held using a Canon 5D mark II hand held with a 16-35 2.8L II USM . The lens was set at 35mm. It was shot at 30 FPS because the 5D firmware update did not exist yet. I shot from the balcony of the Celebrity X Cruise ship from my room hand help bracing on the side of the railing and wall. @Vincent Laforet, So he launched a quadra copter from a cruise ship?
wow.
兄弟,借你的宝地做个广告:广东粉末涂料:www.hongtaikj.com
From A huge Cruise Boat that leave Venice. I did that shot from a small boat one and it’s amasing to see this big boat near “St-Marco”
I said about a month or so ago that all the equipment coming out for DSLRs are great but I thought it was all too much. Let’s get back to camera and operator. This just proved my point. Great ( and simple ) work.
cruise ship 🙂
how is that simple? he was on an effin cruise ship?
Most defenitely this was shot from a ferry or a cruise shio departing the port of Venice. The Video was shot in the canal that those ships use when leaving the city.
lol K.I.S.S. I haven’t heart that in years! It’s so true though! It’s fun to let your mind wander about how things were done but the simplest explanation is usually the correct one.
It’s like magic tricks. We usually over think them, so we can never figure it out.

@visitor, LOL, A little over the top,but I got a laugh.
From the mast of a sailing ship
Thank you guys for inspiring other photographers and making present time “the best time ever for photographers”. Also Italy video posted would be even better if he shot it with tilted lens 🙂
you’re actually a wizard, and you were flying?
RC Chopper or cruise ship. I’m leaning towards the latter.
Cool, was going to say cruse ship too. I did one similar on amsterdam. the boats make for solid platforms. I used no tripod. just hand held against the ledge.
