Canon & Vimeo Film Contest is Open
The Canon & Vimeo contest page is live!
Please check it out – and see the videos as they come in
(You can enter NOW but have almost a month before we hit the first deadline.)
There is also a forum page for you to ask any questions and to share insights with others.
These the prizes that the winners will be able to choose from (total of 6 winners.)
And now let me translate them for you in plain english as best I can:
You can enter as of January 15th (now) but there is no rush – you have just under a month to enter your submission for Chapter 2 – the first deadline is February 11, 2010 at 11:59.59 p.m. E.S.T…
Here’s how the competition works:
Canon gave me a still image to interpret into a short film. My short film then ends on the still image below.
Now it’s YOUR turn to interpret the image above into your own 2-4 minute film- and end on YOUR still image…
On February 25th – the winner of Chapter 2 will be announced – and this starts all over again with that winner’s ending still image… Everyone will then start to submit their submissions for Chapter 3… and so on an so on. So you have a total of 6 chances to win in this 7 chapter long series.
The idea is to have 7 unique chapters that are threaded together with these connecting still images. There is no need to have one continuous narrative through the 7 chapters – that may happen – but it’s not required or necessary. We’re leaving things pretty open on purpose to see how where this social filmmaking experiment leads us all. Some of you may choose to follow in this narrative – while others are more than welcome to shift the next chapter in a very different direction or style.
TO BE CLEAR: while you may choose to continue the narrative of Chapter 1- you DO NOT have to… ALL THAT YOU NEED TO DO TO QUALIFY – is to have your film inspired by the ending still above. You should feel free to take the narrative into a totally different direction. As long as your entry is inspired by the still above – and ends on another still that you choose – you qualify in my book.
Does this mean that your first shot of your film is shot in a warehouse – in my opinion no. Does this mean that you have to have the same type of lighting… no. Let your imagination take you somewhere and don’t feel limited or allow the image above to hinder your creativity in any way.
This is incredibly exciting – and I can’t wait to see the first entries come in. Remember that you have a total of 6 chapters to enter – and therefore 6 chances to win. Good luck!!!!
Great work Vincent. Certain final results/entries will be nothing short of creative excellence.
As i read “open only to legal residents of the United States” i understand that from my little France i can’t be in ?
Vincent, I live in Moscow (Russia), can I also take part in this great contest?
Hi Vincent
I am from Belgium and i want participe !
Please accept others countries ! 🙁
Thanks
Vincent can you make available a high RES version of the end still so that creatively entries can merge the still into a motion graphic, in which ever way they choose,I think this will help with the continuum of the project. MP

Is it possible to join if i’m not living in the US but have a family member who does and can receive the award on my behaf? (i’m talking about the camera, not the trip)
aaaaargh, US residents only… [bangs head against wall] whyyyy? whhyyyyyyyy?
Change the rules so that everyone can participate but win only if the provide a US address for the reward (and pay for their trip to the US for the other part of it).
Hey guys,
After reading the rules, it states that the contest is only opened to US Residence. However, with a little finessing, international folks can still enter. You need to read between the lines and make it work for you. Therefore, you need an address and phone number to be reached at (reads relative/close friend living in the US) and your submission must come from an IP address in the US. So don’t submit from your flat in London. Im not a lawyer so I suggest looking into the details.
Its also important to note that these issues only pertain to winning submissions! I’m assuming that there will be a lot of great submissions and the chances of winning are going to be tough.

@Superfan, Which I could have said that 😉
US residents only. 🙁 No little canadians like me then. Why is it that way? Canon products are sold around the world and I’m sure they can afford to manage the legal side of making it open to citizen of any countries. Don’t get me wrong. I think that contest is great. But that makes it even more frustrating for foreigners.
Ok… guys i dont know why you keep complaining! he told you 300 times! (Need to be summited by an USA resident…) YOU can shot it where ever you want… just get someone to summit for you… HE already gave you that clue 400 times… he cant really be more clear without being completely obvius 😀 (domminum@hotmail.com)
I am a resident… read between the lines

@Samarithan!, Thank you Samarithan
Any chance we could get a 1920×1080 still? The one uploaded isn’t even 720 🙁
Really looking forward to this, though. Sounds like a great contest. We’re ready to participate!

@Vincent Laforet, Appreciate it! Made it my desktop wallpaper, so I think about ideas every time I glance at my screen 🙂
Only US residents?:(((
This looks like its gonna be a great contest that will produce some great content…everyone here at silberstudios will be sure to stay tuned in. Thanks Vincent!
Have just found your blog and I really like what I see. Looking forward to following it!
p.s. I LOVE Vincent’s work, and believe in social media, buy why should all contestants have to give up rights to their work?

@Greg Ceo, Greg – let me look into this further. I did bring this issue up a few months ago – and it looks like the legal team did not get word…
Did the Canon Lawyers agree to make any changes?

@Greg Ceo, We’re working on it… it’s complicated…what isn’t with lawyers these days! But we’re definitely not forgetting about this…
Damn!! US citizens? I am in India??
I have been wanting to get into film really bad! I was investing in a Canon XL2, but of course it was a lot more money than I had. Seeing the ad for “The Cabbie” on Vimeo gave me another route to choose. For now I want to pick up the Canon 7D and get started with shooting!
Anyone know of the best place/price to pick one up? Any other recommendations to get with the camera to begin shooting?
Dear Vincent, This is something really amazing story developement you have made in this. I live in INDIA..makes short films interested and participate in this great contest. plz tell me how we can …?
Hi Vincent,
You’re doing a great job promoting DSLRs. For indy filmmakers it’s a godsend. I myself use DSLRs on short commercial content I produce.
The problem I have with you and this contest is that you seem to giving people the idea that with nice equipment and with out much study and “only” in 72 hours, you can make a great film.
Sure you shot Reverie in 72 hours, and it looks very slick, but from a filmmaking stand point, it’s awful. Like 1st year 1st semester film school undergraduate terrible.
I’m going to bet that the film that wins contest looks great and includes all sorts of unnecessary dolly, crane, pans Jerry Bruckheimer style shots.
That slick “film” will beat out one that is simple, modest visually but relies on story telling and craft rather than visual gimmicks and technical do-dah.
At the end of the day, you can make a great film on sticks, all in wides with no fancy color grading.
While I admire your passion and enthusiasm for film making, you are far from a filmmaker. You are a digital photographer who got in with the right people at the right time and are now riding a mighty big wave. I find it offensive that you and the other DSLR “filmmaker” are the “judges” of this contest, as if you had the credentials to judge what a good film is or is not.
I encourage you to work more on your storytelling skills and less time fucking around with fancy equipment. This is coming from someone who actually works in the biz. All the best.
Sounds like Peter needs a few more tasks to occupy his day.
