Behind The Scenes Video
Keep in mind – this is raw footage (not RAW) from both Canon XH A1 camcorder – and a few clips for the Canon EOS 5D MKII – you’ll see that the two are toe to toe (not really) on bright scenes… but in low light – the Canon EOS 5D MKII is impressive – but common sense leads me to state the following: if the Canon still camera team and the video team have come together to produce the Canon EOS 5D MKII – the next HD camcorder they come out with – may just floor us all… these are very exciting times – to be someone who focuses on “creating” as opposed to the “process” and “technique” of making your vision match the “reality” of the tools you have at your disposal. To view the main movie (not the behind-the-scenes), click here: REVERIE
See it in higher resolution on SmugMug!
This is so great! Thanks for posting this – it’s a great insight to how it all went down!
Absolutely amazing! I’m even more jazzed after seeing the behind the scenes stuff!

Simply Awesome!
Just one word “Amazing”!
I think I’ve watched it 12 times so far… I. Need. This. Camera!
Great work! Looks like so much fun 😉 Wish I was there.
Nicely mon, nicely! Who do you fly with in NYC?
Wow. The quality from the 5D clips is amazing…
This camera is going to turn me into a vampire.
My jaw just dropped to the floor…
Really nice work!
Great video! But there’s a “media offline” clip in this video at 03:06 ?? FCP render transition file missing..:(
I found it funny that when you were stopped on the street setting up the hood shots, tourists stopped and took pictures of you. I’m sure they had no idea who you were or what you were doing but they thought you must be important movie people or something.
Great video BTW.
Hi Vincent, thanks for all your hard work, I’m as excited as everyone else to actually try this camera out.
It seems my (oldish) computer is freaking out big time trying to play the film, any chance Canon (or Smugmug)can also host a smaller version? The “behind the scenes” video works fine and I could enjoy the (short!) 5D2 clips it featured.
Ah oops, no matter… found the vid at smugmug 🙂
MAGNIFIQUE!!! 5DII is awsome and you did a superbe work.
Merci!
well done!
Can’t wait to work with you!
You did a fabulous job. The camera is just as fabulous. So is your team. I pre-ordered the camera this morning after viewing your blog last night. These videos are the icing on my cake. Very exciting. Thanks. Unbelievable for lack of experience and time that this all looks so incredibly gorgeous and professional. Very cinematic, not an ounce of video look.
Am i dreaming or something?
Your fantastic work with 5DII is gonna be the most shocking event of this year…no, this decade of camera history!!! TWO THUMBS UP!!
The making off makes the film even more impressive.
Two little things that made me smile: The flickering light scene …. and the son of Darth Laforet, with his closing remark “cut” ….
Thank you soooo much for keeping my blood rushing for three days (and nights) now.
this looks better that the canon hosted video 😀
Love this, great work!
The scene where you had the 5DII suction cupped to the outside of the SUV (to get the skid shot) is awesome. Looking at how grainy that scene is (shot on the XH-A1) vs how clean the results from the 5DII are – man, night and day difference.
Thanks for the behind the scenes! They are awesome and I always learn more from the behind the scenes shots. 🙂
-=- Terence
Great job ! i wanna put my hands on it…
The movie seemed interlaced and not progressive.. I thaught it was possible with that cam
anyway, thanks for sharing ! :))
5DII …all that I can say is awesome…wow
Wow, I am so excited! Thank you Vincent!
Its a great clip. But its hanging at 49 seconds. Anything wrong in my computer??.
The behind the scenes were very inspirational. Glad to see the list of lenses used on the main video, and would be quite interested to learn more about any techniques you may have used to overcome limitations with the camera.
I think you’ve created something ground-breaking with the advent of video in dSLR and will go down as being one of those who’ve shaken things up.
Also, being a longtime user of Smugmug (pro acct), it’s fantastic to see them be so generous in their support.
It’s photographers, companies, and groups such as these that have participated in your project that push the boundaries and make us all more inspired to learn, develop, and further our skills.
I believe many of us would love to see more of the technical side of things in future endeavors you may pursue (similar to what Chase Jarvis has been doing).
Was suprised at how little lighting was used. Amazing.
This is a great example of its possibilities. I am eager to have one of these!
Great Job !
Amazing! I have always wanted to get into some form of photography, your video has made me want to finally take the plunge. Question, I have NO experience in photography, is this camera ok to learn on? I don’t want to spend thousands of dollars on one, only to purchase this camera in the future.
Well done. This video was well worth the wait. I am going to check out the actual video now and I can imagine that I will be even more blown away then I already am with this behind the scenes video.
I must say that it is truly amazing and a complete revolution of our industry. Excellent production. Congratulations!
“Amazing! I have always wanted to get into some form of photography, your video has made me want to finally take the plunge. Question, I have NO experience in photography, is this camera ok to learn on? I don’t want to spend thousands of dollars on one, only to purchase this camera in the future.”
Andy, go to the dpreview.com forums. A lot of help there for your questions.
btw… this camera is second to only the canon 1ds series, the highest camera line in canon and it doesn’t have video yet.
Also, teh body is just the initial investiment, you will soon learn about L lens which are not cheap at all, atleast over 1K for the cheapest L.
For those of you who haven’t read Vincent’s article, “The Cloud is Falling,” do it now. What you’re witnessing with the 5D MkII videos is a perfect and direct example of what Vincent addresses in his writing. *Any* of you could have put this production together and generated this amount of publicity. True, not everyone has access to pre-production equipment (and as a Canon ambassador, Vincent is paid to represent Canon), but the idea is the same- use the tools you have available to create your own media, reach new audiences and perhaps reach new markets for your work.
QUESTION FOR VINCENT:
Is it possible to create a video frame by frame with the MarkII, such as needed for animation work (e.g. claymation)?
Many thanks.
Josh Mehler Reply:
October 4th, 2008 at 11:06 pm
Yes. You could use any digital camera. Take huge photos. Just think about the frame rate you want to use, and take that many photos for every second. Meaning, if you want 24fps, take 24 photos for every second of your film. Bring those stills into Final cut (or something similar) and have fun. 🙂
Thanks Citidon, The next question that I have is, I know that you can purchase the body with a lens, is this “kit” an appropriate investment, or, should I just purchase the body, and another separate lens?
Perhaps I crave technology too much, I loved the behind the scenes way better 😀 – the quality of the new Canon is fantastic…
RM
Amazing!!! Thank you for sharing such an epic behind the scenes. It’s just a interesting as the actual movie!
I haven’t seen any information about audio capture capabilities. Did you experiment with audio at all?
This totally beats the 5DII squirrel looking for a nut video that I found on the Canon Japan website.
Andy – this camera is available in a kit with the very excellent 24-105mm f4L, which you effectively get for $800 more rather than the $1,050 it costs alone.
Hey Vincent,
Thanks for your excellent work. I was wondering how did you get the FD 7.5 mm mated into the EF system?
I would love to find out how you got this done.
Thanks,
-J
Vincent,
Merci et félicitations pour cet excellent travail de pionnier. Tu as tracé la voie pour une nouvelle vague de photo-vidéographes.
With this new camera, the sky is the limit.
Will Canon be able to meet the initial demand?
Hey Vincent
Nice work!
i have two questions for you, One can not help notice how tack sharp the movie is. For the Scene in the movie where there is an empty chair, what was your aperture ? and did you have an aperture which you used more then anyother. The DOF is magical!
Second (or third) question is while shooting a movie, is it possible to vary the aperture ie go from 1.2 to 16 while the camera is recording. and if so is it possible to control this via a laptop wireless or wired
Thanks
Chris
Awesome Video !! is camera are incredible!!
FANTASTIC
Looks like you were using the Kenyon Gyro Stabilizer running down the street (and, I assume, in the helicopter). That seems like it would be an important accessory for handheld filming. What model would you recommend for general use on the 5D? Or is it as simple as choosing by weight?
Great work. Results seem to be great. Thanks for posting this. I’m looking at this camera with different eyes now.
This is a revolution full stop. And it is only the beginning. We artists , amateurs can produce now technical quality that match professional movie making equipment worth tens of thousands and more..
The world is opening up..wow!! I am so excited…
Vincent, as always, incredible work. First time I heard video in a DSLR, I asked “what for”. Thanks for pointing it out to me!
When you are in Chicago for the Cubs vs. White Sox World Series, I owe you a beer!
I’m ready for the camcorder!
Also, how much were the gyros you used for stabilization?
Perhaps you could make a complete equipment list?
In case others, like myself, missed this:
http://www.pdngearguide.com/gearguide/content_display/news/e3ifb7c0deaad627f7c9f1fb4d41382ec02
Insane. Awesome work.
Vincent, this was amazing!! Thank you so much for posting this!!!
Unbelievable cinematography!
That’s a fantastic display of both your teams capabilities and of course the wonders of the new 5DII – Look forward to seeing the next movie
Truly transformational and inspiring. I applaud and admire your work and creativity.
This encourages me to further engage in the proper study of film and photography.
Bravo.
I’ve been strictly a “stills” guy but since I had pre-ordered before seeing this video, there’s going to be a brand new “moving” world. Can’t wait!
Thanks for sharing with us what the envelope may be.
I was thinking on going with the Red One camera but I think I will be rethinking that since I believe the Canon 5D MarkII can do what I need at a more affordable price including the lens!
That is just amazing!
Amazing work Canon! Congratulations all!
Your ingenuity is equalizing the access to tools that before could only be reached by people with deep pockets. Not any more. As Vincent Laforet said
The rules have change!
That camera is absolutely stunning.
Love the idea of the “total gear list.” Any possibility? Please? tia!
Just a bit of factual correction – the XH A1 is NOT the canon top of the line HD camcorder. Their top model is the XL-H1. But I agree that their next line of HD camcorders must floor us. The 5D is indeed amazing.
The most striking difference to my eyes is that EOS 5D images have much better colors than the video camera.
Seems you had a lot of fun too,Vincent Spielberg Laforet
Vincent,
I really enjoyed this piece and do think it’s just the opening salvo in things to come including a camcorder form factor camera that takes Canon 35mm glass.
I have preordered my 5D MKII.
After reading your blog, the comments, and watching the film and behind the scenes a few times I am wondering what a more realistic budget was.
I know you only layed out $5k USD (2k for da choppa) but if you calculated how much it was to rent all the gear you used I wonder how much more that figure would really be?
Certainly to own it would be huge. 50-100K? maybe?
I do think you can shoot a great movie for somewhere in the neighborhood of 5-10k with the 5D MKII!
Excellent!
This is fascinating – stunning work putting this short film and behind the scenes footage together with such a cramped timeframe. I’m amped to try this out in November and see how this video thing pans out.
What Moby song is this?
wow, and i thought the D90 was cool.
Hey Vincent,
First of all, awesome video. Hope to see more. I like to know more the FD lens that was converted. What shots did you use that lens for? Did you have to send the lens somewhere to get it converted or was this an off the shelve converted, which I heard bad things about? Any problems you encountered using the converted lens? Thanks!
Nikon sux 😀
INCREDIBLE!!!
This film should be hosted in the Apple HD Gallery in full 1080P. Apple would be delighted to host the Film! They can handle the bandwidth. Contact Apple!
Wow. Just wow. 🙂
Forget the camera. The most brilliant thing about this whole exercise is the marketing ingenuity of Mr Laforet. I can’t believe how much he’s elevated his profile in the last few months. The man is a genius.
Awesome!!! Thanks Vincent!
Fantastic work !
great work!
excuse me, does anyone know what brand the chair of the video is?
Wow! Great video and very interesting to see how it was made. I am very surprised by the 5D mkII video capabilities. Thanks again.
dear vicent:
please check in your video the hole in the dress. dont somoke on her! (the hole in the dress combines perfectly with the hole in the girl!!! 😉
kisses
fla (from argentina)
The music by the vegan artist Moby was awesome!
Thanks Vincent for putting the behind the scenes vid together. Amazing what you just did with a $3000 DSLR !?!
How was permission obtained so quickly for use of the music score?
~S
bravo it’s very nice …
Chapeau!
Vincent, very nice works!
Thank you.

For those of you that were asking, here’s the music that was used:
Reverie: Extreme Ways
Reverie (Behind the Scenes): Horse & Carrot
Both songs are by Moby on the album: 18.
This just stinks with greatness!! 🙂
Love the little super-hero at the end — makes it feel like my house. 😉
@ Kiliman – wrong.
yes yes yes – all nice. BUT…
Where is the sound?
Bad audio kills good visuals – this explains the music in stead of ambient sound.
Sorry – but this camera is not mature enough
Inspiring and interesting to see how technology enables new forms of artistic expression.
I dont get the video at all. Whats with the name?
reverie

@ photoTristan: Uh, considering that Vincent himself made this comment on a later post, I think you should reconsider:
Hi Vincent, what scenes did you use the EF 16-35mm f/2.8 USM L on? Car was fisheye I’m guessing and what about helicopter scene? Thanks!
It blows me mind when ever I see what you do. Im a young photojournalist and I look up to you so please keep doing crazy work, so I have something to work toward being better then.
Love your work
The clips were just plain sick. I am so stuck in Nikon. The 5D is crazy compared to the D90’s clips with no auto focus. I am hoping that Nikon has one to top that around the corner.
can you tell us the setup you used for mounting the 5D on your car, I know their manfrotto pump cups, but what versions did you use, and which arm brackets. And why 3 pump cups instead of one?
all i can say is WOW. i want to get this camera!
too strong
j adooore
Hey Vince
Quick question: What is the name of the song by “Moby” in the “Behind the scenes” video???
Woooooooooooooooooooooooowsome!
Outstanding work!
Very inspiring!
Keep them coming!
can’t wait to get my hands on this one!
Thanks for sharing.
JK
expectacular. enhorabuena
Nice!
I wasn’t sure I needed a video camera in my photography arsenal, but now I am convinced that Mark II 5D is a must have.
Very nice. After viewing Reverie I wanted to see how you lit the scenes. Amazing that you used only one light in the “woman in a red dress” shots. Wow! No big light kit. Just one guy to hold a 2k was it? Also was really impressed that you used an LCD as a light source. Simply cannot believe how good this camera looks in low-light. Not like 500 people haven;t told you already, but nice job guys.
GREAT Thing!!! I want it !!! NOW
I’m surprised to see there are no vibration reduction devices on the camera mounted directly on the hood of the car. I would imagine that just by turning the engine on, the camera would shake like crazy. What about the helicopter shots? I shot, recently with a Vixia HF100 camcorder, inside a chopper and vibrations where really obvious.
hey, you guys need any help on any up coming projects please let me know. I can provide you help carrying your equipment if nothing else. Your teaser flick is awesome. You have talent. My dad is a Wedding photography up north in Toronto. I was completely awed watching that in full resolution. Now it makes me wonder if Canon is going to allow 2k or 4k cinema quality in there Mark IIII Ds versions in the mere future.
Great to see behind the scenes, appreciated.
Wow. Movie studio in a box. I’ve been waiting for this for about 20 years.
Just have to say that this is sweeeeeetttttt!!!!
Stunning visuals, and from a still camera, cant wait for the chip to advance to a camcorder, But This video was edited in Final Cut, I have edited footage from the Canon Vixia HF11 AVCHD Camcorder and it had to be transcoded to Pro Res, Since Final Cut doesn’t edit native AVCHD. What was your workflow to get from card to edit.
for those of you who want to DOWNLOAD the film in hi resolution mp4 (80meg), HERE is the download link.
but why only 12minutes? Why no time-lapse setting..
Really Cool, great insight – Thanks
Magnifico. Realmente bueno, los clips de la 5D Mark II son guapisimos… Nice job, V.
Im an older guy 55 just bought this camera not allowed to use it untill santa gives it to me.After watching your well to me a movie my jaw dropped just didnt realise that the true stars of i guess videos movies and stills. Are truly behind the cameras please take a bow you truly deserve it will certainly appreciate your craft much more in the future Thank you Paul (director) lol
Thats so cool! Thank you! Eine Supersache!

Can anyone tell me at what bit rate the mov files are captured. Awesome footage, but is the bit rate good enough for broadcasting?

I know that the car-rig mount consists of the following:
Avenger F1000
Avenger F1100
Avenger D200
Manfrotto Magic Arm
The only part I can’t figure out is how Vince connects the outside suction cups to the center one. The two magic arms are attached to the main unit to give it extra support.
Anyone have any ideas what the center head unit is?
Thanks for this video! I learned a lot from it.
Thank you so much for responding and answering some of our questions!!!!
very nice for your blog!
I was able to create my own custom car mount after seeing how the camera was mounted to the hood there. A picture of it in action, notes and part numbers are here:

You are killing me with these videos Vincent. I want to shoot video with my D-SLR for our wedding and portrait work but the Nikon’s aren’t as good as Canon at the moment for video recording…
Maybe I’ll pick up a Mark II for giggles… Oh and a f/1.2 lens. Jealous about those lenses as well.
Great work Vincent!
