Behind The Scenes II
See it bigger on SmugMug!
(Due to the length and size of this piece I am putting it up at 720p.)
Please note that Tiffen and Formatt BOTH make screw on filters and 4 X 5.65 filters for the matteboxes. I use a variety of filters from both companies – I use 1-6 stop Neutral Density filters as well as a few 10 stop screw on filters. (The RED One camera became part of our production a few days before we left and we had to scramble to find the appropriate filters in time – luckily both Tiffen and Formatt helped save the day in last minute fashion.)
Both companies also make graduated NDs and Hot Mirror filters that cut out infra red light when using the RED One camera. The 4 stop and 6 stop are the NDs we’re using most often. I personally like the 10 stop to use my 1.2 lenses wide open in sunlight. Also – if you want to stay very light and mobile – I recommend you use the screw on filters – I travel with a set of 72mm and 77mm filters for my Canon lenses – but you could also buy a step-down adapter to screw on your 77mm filters onto your 72mm if you’re looking to economize. I tell every friend buying a 5D MKII to: 1. buy ND filters right away and 2. an good video head (see the Gitzo G2180 below) 3. an extra battery for the 5D MKII 4. and look into audio (see previous posts for the Rode mic and other options.)
We’ve also been using a variety of Manfrotto Tripods and video heads that we mention in this Behind The Scenes on this project that have allowed us to pull of some very nice pans of Jamie surfing. I can’t overstate how important it is for you to get a good tripod set to shoot nice pans – and you’ll need the heavy duty stuff to shoot with the heavier RED and long Canon glass. If you want a simple setup to start off with a 5D MKII and shorter lenses – we’ve found the Gitzo carbon fiber tripods and the Gitzo G2180 Fluid head to perform quite remarkably (but don’t overload it or any fluid head with weight – unlike still photography you can’t really get away with overloading a head with video as your pans and tilts will suffer.) Another really nice option are these self-standing monopods by Manfrotto that I recommend you use with a quick release plate.
Check out the RedRock Micro DSLR Rig and long lens support that I’ve mentioned in the past as well as the Wicked Circuits EF Lens adapter for the RED One Camera.
I will be posting a DETAILED list of all of the gear described within this and the first behind the scenes clip in a few days after we put up the 3rd installment of the Behind the Scenes up (it’s a long list and I want to add links so it’ll take me a better part of a day to do and we’ve only got a few days of shooting left on this project.)
very very impressive, vincent! shooting with red at such high frame rate, assuming you are shooting raw (redcode?) do you encounter problems in post? crashes etc?

@mike kobal, It’s been incredibly stable – not a single crash. We’ve been using the new log and transfer RED plugin for Final Cut pro – and grading in Color w/o a glitch so far. Real real easy.

awesome, that is good to hear! good luck for the rest of your shoot!
I just found your blog and i have to say i am blown away. i really appreciate the behind the scenes footage—i have learned so much from you already. Please keep posting!!! your footage is beautiful.
How much post are you doing on your shots before uploading?

@gary, Just a bit of work in Final Cut Studio’s color grading software “Color” – not much more than 20-60 seconds per clip
Mamma mia ! ND Filters, I think that is the best “hide” info on entire web about Canon 5D mark2 !
Great Vincent !
Thank you so much Vincent. I love watching your art at work.
Thanks for this Vincent. Just wondering – have you ever tried the Singh-Ray Vari-ND? I used to carry one in order to be able to use fill-flash in very bright light, just wondering if it could have an application here. Cheers, and keep up the good work.

@Sterling Zumbrunn, Never have – will look into it
question ?
When you screw in an Nd on the 5dMKII you cut the DOP, but the auto-exposure feature of the video mode will increase the ISO, no ?

@francois, the short answer is: you have to trick the camera… point it at a dark / light subject to trick it to the lower /higher ISO – it’s not perfect – but works.
Hi Vince
🙂 this is my first post in your blog so far.. i like more to read than write 😉
but what came to my mind is actually that you are using EF canon lenses which are designed mainly for photography because of their Auto Focusing system.. instead of using traditional Arri PL mount with Zeiss glass – which I think would be far easier for the focus puller 🙂
Why did you actually decide to use EF 🙂 is it only because you can use those same lenses on the 5D 🙂
Good luck in the project 😉 have fun 😉
Oh and Happy New Year 🙂

@Ivan, Indeed – but those lenses are VERY expensive… and I already have so many Canon lenses – so the challenge for me was finding a way to make them work.
Hey Vincent! Thanks for sharing all your knowledge! What do you think about these Vari-ND filters from Singh-Ray? http://www.singh-ray.com/varind.html
Have you ever used them before? Thanks!
Love hearing about your setup. Before i read this, I had found this post of bruce Dorn’s about video heads quite helpful:
http://www.idcphotography.com/blog/bruce-dorn/head-games-tripod-heads-video-capture
Really enjoy reading about everything you’re doing. Thanks for sharing.
I now this will come off as snarky but hear me out. This is a serious question.
With rates being lowered and usage flying out the window, are you trying to start a new trend in photography buy mentioning everything you use(here and on your blog) to get free stuff and payment? You look like you’ve sold out faster than a nascar driver. If so, I’m interested in how this is working and is it a future model? Jarvis seems to be doing the same and I wonder if there is a way to subsidize ones living doing it?
Thanks

@Brook, Not getting any free stuff or payment – nor free gear. It all goes back to the manufacturers at the end of the shoot – the idea is: I’m using a lot of prototype equipment – and testing it out for many of them w/ new DSLR technology – it’s a win win for everyone. The only party that’s put money into this is SmugMug – and they’ve asked little in return other than these posts and behind the scenes video – they offered to fund my next movie (following Reverie) months ago. Without them – and the other manufacturers lending us the gear – this production would not have been possible.
This question is a little bit off topic, but it relates to the handling of the 5D MK II when using “Camera Armour.” I noticed that in the making of Reverie video, that you had your camera in camera armour brand covering. I would assume that you did that as the camera you had was a prototype and you needed to keep it confidential. I am thinking about getting armour for my 5D MK II and wanted to know if you had any issues with buttons not lining up or suggestions to use it or not. I have looked at their website and they don’t have a model for the MK II yet. What was your experience with it?
Thanks in advance!
Vincent Laforet Reply:

@Adam, I used the Camera Armour for the exact purpose you mentioned above – and at the time a 5D MKII was not available obivously 😉

@Vincent, Thanks for the information and report back. I know that you are really, really busy. I see that they still don’t have a specific 5D MK II style out yet. Did you have any functionality issues with the regular 5D armour?
Vincent I noticed in one of the previous behind the scenes a new macbook pro is that what your using for video editing? Or do you have a mac pro?

@Ed Stone, Both – Intel Octa Tower and the new MacBook Pro that has the H.264 chipset – that chipset makes a SIGNIFICANT difference w/ the 5D MKII
hey vincent, what field monitor would you recommend for the 5dmkll ? i bought the redrock micro cinema bundle & need a good high def monitor for my focus puller. any options? price, quality.
thanks man you rock!

@Charles P., I’ve now moved to the Marshall Electronic monitors – much better than anything I’ve yet tried. I have a prototype of the HDMI version that I think will be out in Feb. It’s the only monitor I’ve used that allows me to focus the 5D MKII WHILE it’s recording… recommend it hands down. (http://www.lcdracks.com/monitors/VideoAssistMonitors.htm)

@Vincent Laforet, Hi Vincent – I’m in the market for a monitor, do you know if the prototype you refer to had released yet or do you have a model no? Also when you said “It’s the only monitor I’ve used that allows me to focus the 5D MKII WHILE it’s recording”…are you saying there’s a way to control focus from this monitor, or that even when manually focusing while recording other monitors won’t show the changing image? I’m not sure I quite understood.
Anyway, any additional info much appreciated, good luck in post on your current project.
I’ll be the 3rd to suggest the Vari-ND from Singh-Ray. Singh-Ray also makes great graduated ND filters as well. Pricey but the Vari-ND let’s you go light with one ND to cover a range.
you better be eating every day at Ted Bakery!!
oops that is Ted’s Bakery!! We’ve been everywhere in hawaii and love north shore / haleiwa thw most.
Also, honestly you should try and get a meal at the Hukilau (sp) cafe.. ak around, it isn’t anything close to fancy, but the best on the island
It’s been a while since I start to read your blog, but now, leave me to say: Thanks!
Thanks for the tips about photo and video, thanks for share your time with us, thanks for the passion that you put in all your works!
Your work is simlpy an ispiration for me, just think that after met you on the web I’ve decided to buy a HDV camera (only an affordable HV30, I’m not a pro) because it’s raising in me the need to make something to share with other people, and all thank to you.
Vincent
Was at your seminar in Boston
It convinced me to get the 5DM2
I have been reading all sorts of problems editing 5DM2 footage in FCP. People talk of transcoding in ProRes and other work-arounds.
Did you encounter any of that – and, if so, what was your solution
Best
Vincent Laforet Reply:

@Jay Connor, Transcode to ProRes if you want to do anything fancy – definitely – FCP will work w/ simply cuts etc w/o transcoding (Reverie was never transcoded… but a better long term workflow is to convert to ProRes)
hi vincent
I have seen your short film “Reverie” several times and this is the first time i am visiting your blog. Lots of good information. great job and I shall visit your blog more often.
thanks and good luck..
Thanks for all the updates on the work. The Jamie O’Brien project is awesome to watch. Can’t wait to see the finished product.
Nice tips.
Thanks.
ND filter are really useful also with traditional photography.
If you get a chance to come to town, make sure you stop by Side Street Inn, absolutely some of the best food on the Island! Enjoy Hawaii! Great shots, I may have to uncancel my Mk2 order!
Will the G2180 Fluid head hold the Redrock Micro Rig together with the 70-200 f2.8 IS L ,mounted on the 5D? I’m going to india to do a stills documentary and would like to ad HD video to the production. I need to travel as light as possible… So i have a Manfrotto MF4 Magfiber tripod going along. Will that be fine with this head and this setup? I also own the Manfrotto 475 but that means quite a few extra kg’s on airlines that don’t like excess luggage much… any thoughts? As an aside… thx for all the legwork your doing. Saves a lot of us quite a lot of research, time and money!
Vincent Laforet Reply:
January 7th, 2009 at 6:06 am
@David Forway, No the RedRock micro will be too heavy – look at the weight of the lens/camera/Rig and find a head rated to that weight – very important not to overload as you know… the pan and tilting will be choppy if you do.
Hmm or have you been testing apples new 17″ macbook pro? You have connections with apple..
I wonder are you going to do any underwater stuff of Jamie surfing?
hmm North Shore.
10 minutes from where I’m staying now.
I might even get the chance to see you people doing these cool stuff.
But yeah, if I really see you, I won’t go bother you. : )
I’ve been looking around for a 6 stop and 10 stop ND filter as mentioned. I can’t seem to find one. Normally I don’t have any trouble hunting things down. Could anyone post a direct link to a couple. I’m looking for 77mm screw on, and 62mm screw on.
Thanks,
Aaron

@Aaron, Yes, I can’t find any 6 stop or 10 stop screw-on ND filters from Tiffen either. Vincent, where did you find yours? I’m looking for 72mm. Thanks! Corey
hi vinc,
where did you find 10 stops ND filters?
I’ve really enjoyed your video posts and appreciate all the great info. Is there any way to shoot video on the 5D Mark ll and control all aspects of the camera individually (aperture, shutter speed and ISO)? From everything i’ve tried and read the camera defaults to automatic exposure unless you lock it. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Matt Chenot

@Matt Chenot, Hey Matt, how’s it going? Funny to see you on here. There is no way to manually control the exposure in video. You can trick it into the settings you want by using ND filters and such. Just something that has to be worked around to get the great quality from the camera. To get the lens to open up you can also put your hand in front until it compensates and then as it adjusts back to normal lock the exposure. This works because the camera set’s the different settings in one order. ISO>Shutter>Aperture… It’s a pain but it works.
I am in absolute awe of what you guys are doing. Absolutely extraordinary!!
Hey Vincent,
I’m loving the blog and what you’re doing. I’ve been watching intently for a while now.
I have two questions for you: 1. Do you know of any good ND packs you can buy (something that comes with a range that is cheaper than buying a few separately)? 2. Do you think anyone is likely to try and hack the 5DMkII’s firmware to get access to giving you control over setting the aperture and ISO. And if someone did, would you try it or are there reasons you would not (legal or practical)?
Thanks for your time and I look forward to hearing your answers and seeing more updates as I wait for my 5DMkII to arrive.
Vincent,
We know about ‘tricking’ the camera with the light/dark and auto exposure lock and using ND…….but, have you found a way to keep the same AE lock setting from take to take; i.e. keep the AE lock on. When we record and stop, the camera goes back to auto and we lose the AE lock setting…..thanks.
Hello.
Got a few questions (that I know you may never get to, but if you do, I’d love to hear back):
So, as far as I can tell, you’re putting the mark ii to work on the video side more than anyone. Which must mean you’ve got the most knowledge about it and it’s brain.
Questions:
I see you’re using OnLocation in one of the behind the scenes videos, and I was wondering if the 5D was running through it, or if that was the Red. Also, I recognize the image on the Marshall monitor as the 5D’s video recording screen, so you must be getting live video out of it somehow. SO. All I’m wondering is: is there a way to get video out of the 5D live, and to be able to record it in OnLocation, rather than solely on the CF? Thanks! I see that your latest post was from quite a while ago, so once I see a new one I’ll post this again.
Thanks!

@evan french, you can get live video from 5DII through HDMI during the capture. However, the live HDMI output is low resolution (and there is no sound there) which is enough for field monitor, but not for HD capture.
You better be eating every day 🙂
Vincent, great job on all of the videos I have seen on your blog, especially the Hurry up and wait video; it perfectly describes our work.
I have seen your name in the credits of many excellent photographs; I love the Chrystler building shoot. My question is do you now enjoy shooting video projects more than still image photography, or is just a matter of the assignment?
Love reading your blog, your stuff is always a step ahead of the curve. Keep up the good work.

Thanks for this Vincent. Just wondering – have you ever tried the Singh-Ray Vari-ND?

i just got the ikan monitor. here’s me playing with it.
hi vincent, did you use the manfrotto 526 head with the 5D too ?
I looking for a new video head and i’m hesitate between the 519 and 526. 526 are better built but it’s rate for heavier camera than the 5dmkII. is it a problem ?
thanx for sharing your opinion.

I noticed a reference to the Wicked Circuits EF mount. Are there any viable alternatives? For example, I’ve heard of a “Birger Mount” that has a very nice follow focus system and full controls. What’s your experience with the Wicked Circuit setup? Any hang-ups?
can’t help but conclude that it overlooks another valuable contribution the Internet has made to the economy: http://www.quartztube.net behavioral data as a source of consumer insight that can radically improve how companies go to market.
Hey Vincent,
When we’re shooting with the mark II, do the IS lenses make the difference, or not that crucial?
seth Reply:

@Roberto, I’ve got the 100mm macro with IS. It totally helps if you’re handheld and pushing it with shutter speed or aperture. Might not be such a big deal with a wider lens, but it’s a noticable difference with something like the 100mm.
