AT&T and Apple : FAIL
If there’s been one SIGNIFICANT strategic blunder that Apple has made since the launch of the iPod and the incredible (some would say historic) resurgence of their company – it is to have associated themselves with AT&T. For those of us who have been online to get the first iPhone, and the second, and third – and been through all of the incredibly headaches of failed activations, endless lines and horrid customer service from AT&T (to be fair the people on the phone you get when calling customer service at AT&T are actually great – I’m referring to the service at the stores) – I can’t believe that with the iPhone 4, Apple and AT&T have still not been able to get their act together. It’s an embarrassment – and mostly to Apple.
It’s safe to say that no one expects much from AT&T. I never have. But I am a huge backer of Apple. However, by associating themselves with a subpar company, their value – and record of near perfection – has been tarnished – badly. I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that Steve Jobs has lost many nights of sleep due to his decision to go with AT&T and sign that exclusivity agreement.
And don’t even get me started on the phone service – basically the running jokes these days (and for awhile now) is that the iPhone is the best phone in the world – that can’t actually make any phone calls. I drop 2 out of 3 calls on average. And it’s taken every bit of self control not to throw the phone against a wall/car/you name it – on a number of occasions.
In the end – I’m not debating whether or not to get the iPhone 4 at all. I debated setting my alarm last night for 1 a.m. to get online and order one. I guess part of me is growing up (or becoming fed up with the hype) and I decided not to. I decided I could wait a few extra days/weeks to get the phone if that’s what would result in putting the order in the next morning.
My friend Charles – was not so lucky – here’s an e-mail he sent me this morning (btw – Charles is in his 40s and far too cool to be what one would describe as an Apple Fanboy (ergo I was shocked to see the note from him below) :
“I told myself that while I was going to get an iPhone 4 at some point to not be a rabid little xxxx about it, no waiting in lines etc. So then when I happened across the very beginning of the online ordering last night at 1 a.m., I thought it was just fate and I would go that route–of course Apple and AT&T screwed that whole process up, it was just like trying to call a radio station to win a contest back in the day–you keep dialing and getting a busy signal. I spent 2 bloody hours trying to navigate the ever-shifting windows of death, came so close multiple times, like to the very last screen where you place it “in your cart” and getting Oops! error messages. Each time I promised myself I wasn’t going to try again and then I did. I feel like the biggest shmuck on wheels ever. So, up until 3 a.m., no iPhone4.”
I think that AT&Ts new contracts are abhorrent and abusive – I’d pay extra and perhaps even lose my unlimited web service – if their service actually worked decently in the first place. But they don’t. So for them to try to charge more and provide less is nothing less than laughable. And increasing the early termination fees – could they sound ANY MORE AFRAID or WEAK by doing that!?!?!?
They’ve given me the following idea: I’m probably going to wait for 3-6 months with my iPhone 3Gs for another carrier to be announced. And merrily cancel my AT&T contract then w/o penalty. Unfortunately I don’t think the next provider will be Verizon… I pray that it would because I love Verizon – but my best guess is something more along the lines of T-Mobile…. or some provider on the same network type as AT&T.
We’ll see. For now – I’m not sure I want an iPhone 4G if it comes with AT&T’s strings attached.
Bad move AT&T to not have your act together fort he launch today (for the third time in a row!) – even worse of a move to have announced all of these contractual changes in the past weeks. You killed yourself. I can’t wait to say goodbye together.
Oh and by the way – my AT&T DSL modem isn’t working at my office either today… only wish they had Verizon FIOS in this area… but alas not.
I tried for hours this morning and gave up. I guess I’ll stay with Verizon (probably much smarter idea anyway)

@eriqnixon, Sure is. Great Android phones coming out in a few weeks!
Why else would AT&T be so quick to up people’s contract by six months? Is that new upcoming iPhone carrier coming?
We’ll see.
Mail jobs. Sometimes he reads his emails.
Well, in germany the provider works but has very expensive, exclusive contracts bundled with the iphone. So we rather buy unlocked iphones from other countries and use it with other providers.
some just hack american phones to be free 🙂
My boyfriend ordered the iPhone G4 through Amazon but Amazon will not send the phone to him. He has to go to an Apple store to pick it up and show his driver’s license, credit card and SS number. The problem is the AT&T account is in my name and I have no idea where my ss card is so I guess I have to apply for a replacement card and go with him to get his phone. Major hassle!

@Gale Browning, You don’t need your SS card unless you don’t know your SS number. And if you don’t know your SS number you’ve got bigger problems than an iPhone.
Not for nothing, but I popped into my local Best Buy this morning and was out with pre-orders for 2 iPhone 4s in 10 minutes…

@scott neumyer, Good luck! That’s good news. Like I said – I’ll wait.
I got my wife the Droid via Verizon, then saw the iPhone4G. I must say, its a great device, but does the fundamental operations of a phone very poorly – a fault of ATT. Looking forward to the day when iPhone comes to Verizon.
It’s not 4G.

@Adam, Good catch – there I go wishful thinking again!
The O2 network in the UK stinks for the iPhone and drops every other call too. Except it was OK before and I suggest it will be OK again, just as Orange, T-Mobile, Verizon etc will all stink when overwhelmed with data traffic.
The iPhone is a fantastic portable computer – terrible phone. Luckily I don’t make that many calls.
It’s amazing how they can screw up such a good thing!!

@Vincent Laforet, so true!! Super sad.
I agree, I have had an iPhone since the first one came out, but AT&T has delivered consistently abhorrent service on both my wireless and DSL internet service while charging excessively for such service. This kind of service is exactly why private sector business becomes public sector business, the private sector is failing, fat, and incompetent. If we don’t see some REAL competition in the market what argument is there for deregulation?
My contract with AT&T ran out this month. I’ll be looking to go back to T-Mobile.
That’s because you’re all sheep.
“Damn AT&T won’t let me buy the 4th version of the iPhone. I’ve been burned 3 times before by AT&T yet I’m going back for more…” There’s a saying:
Fool me once, shame on you.
Fool me twice, shame on me.
I could not agree more with your comments Vince. I’m back to old school, got a cheap, small, Verizon phone and a basic voice only plan, keeping the iPhone, which at least in my area works well for data and texting. If feels great to have a phone that actually works as a phone. I forward the calls to the Verizon phone and get all the text and emails on the iPhone. Works great, no dropped calls and actual coverage were my assignments are.

Yea, AT&T sucks. No doubt.
If Apple lawyers are worth their salt the Exclusivity Agreement between Apple and AT&T has a performance clause in it. It’s time for Apple to invoke it!
I just think it is great that someone would actually call Apple out. It seems as though anyone and everyone has such an Apple Iboner for them lately that they don’t even see the err in thier ways. I commend you for speaking out about something so trivial and silly without the fear that Apple will send cops to your door to confiscate all our equipment. 🙂

Losing 2 out of 3 calls sounds bad. That has to be due to AT&T, here in Finland I never lose calls, it works like a charm…
ATT sucks!! Once another option comes I am gone. It is the biggest crock of shit. Way too expensive for no coverage and no service. Adios.
Great job calling them out. I have to say – Jobs was very clear about who he associates Apple with (Flash being the latest to be on the outside looking in.) And I think Jobs needs to do the same to AT&T as he has with Flash. We are ready to move on. See ya later!
It is a shame, to have a carrier that won’t deliver. But I think the bigger shame comes from all the people that by VERSION 4, are still making over night lines, and going rabid for consumerism.
I guess the saddest thing is that this is pretty much expected now. -sigh- at least I’ve got the World Cup to distract me 🙂
@Vincent – How’s your iPad 3G doing? Any thoughts on that whole debacle with the bait and switch tactics of pulling the unlimited data plan?

HA HA!
To be honest, it’s kind of a shame you’re using this wonderful website for a bitch session.
Out here in the Pacific NW my Studio 3 peeps, including myself, had perfect AT&T and/or Apple luck starting at 7:30 AM PDT through about 1 P.M. I was the last one to bother and once again like my past iPhones I’ve pre sold my 3Gs for a bit more then the iPhone 4 (both 32 GB)… Maybe we have better Apple/AT&T karma up here? lol
I certainly don’t want to defend AT&T (I use T-Mobile here in Manhattan), but I must say that it’s hilarious how everybody blames AT&T for everything – as if Apple’s servers didn’t crash today too. Surely it couldn’t be — gasp! — Apple’s failing too! The domain Apple.com, and the screenshot you posted (LOL!), are not controlled by AT&T…
Apple are a bunch of controlling fascists too – please, take them to task when you take AT&T to task. They both equally deserve it!
ohh…. you almost got me started (I have an iPhone) but I did know it would be a trade-off of having a nice phone and subpar service when I bought the phone/contract. And while it’s easy to blame Apple, the fact is there are only a few carriers in the US and at the time, AT&T was the only one that would give Apple the ability to ship a phone that didn’t have Verizon (or fill in carrier name of choice) plastered on every side of the phone and require Apple to load all types of “value added” software with their branding linked to their music store.
Should Apple switch carriers or open it up, absolutely, but both Apple and the wireless carriers are stubborn folk.
Apple to sell unlocked iPhones in Canada…FYI
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/technology/personal-tech/apple/apple-to-offer-unlocked-iphones-in-canada/article1604791/
We’re lucky in Aus, every cellular provider sells the iPhone here.
That’s why I ALWAYS jailbreak my iphone, eff them!
Quite sad actually. Apple entrusted their “best” product with AT&T, and they dropped the ball. This following the iPad security breach and now the iPhone severe breach should be the straw that breaks the camels back. Apple should begin to transition to another provider.
Just a different perspective……I’ve had an iPhone for the past 2 years and have had no more then a handful of dropped calls. AT&T has been no problem whatsoever. My friends with an iPhone have had similar experiences. I walked into BestBuy yesterday and had a 4 pre-ordered with $50 deposit in less then 5 minutes. There seems to be a bandwagon named “AT&T Sucks” but the vast majority of the millions of iPhone/AT&T customers simply go about using an awesome device without issue.
I agree Vincent, Apple would do even better with it’s cellular products if they’d just dump ATT as their exclusive provider. I had a terrible ordering experience yesterday as well.
Unfortunately for us Dave Watson you are in the minority. I live in the northeast and I average several dropped calls per day. It is frustrating to say the least. I even had a dropped call when I was on the iPhone to an Apple Care representative concerning a matter that was unrelated to the iPhone. It was an awkward moment….for him.
I have had the same problems, dropped a series of calls from an art director in england, who awarded me the job, but after reconnecting (while standing in my neighbors driveway to get a signal) she urged that I get a working phone when I received her check…..now i am happy verizon user.

I must have tried 50 times to log in at AT&T last night with no luck. Finally had to go to the store and was told an extra two weeks to get one. This doesn’t make any since to piss off their customers like that! I’m hopping the new larger antenna will help with some of those dropped calls. Can’t beat the apps and HD Video.
I tried ordering the iPhone 4 from ATT but it did not work. So I ordered it through apple’s site w/ no problem. I decided to cancel the order and get the 32gb instead. Again, no problems. As for the service, it has gotten worse in the last month or 2. Sometimes turning off the 3g function improves things. I heard ATT is transitioning to different 3g or 4g equipment and this has caused much of the problems. Perhaps Apple’s new antenna design will help things. ATT’s ability to drop calls is pretty amazing, though.
Nice one Vince!
I use my iPhone with T-moblie and although I can’t use the 3G network, cause of the difference in frequencies, I very very rarely drop calls.
It seems Apple is moving away from what made them a leader in the professional world in order to satisfy the consumer world.
Just look at FCS vs CS5
I worked at Apple for the 3G and 3Gs launches. The 3G launch is the closest I’ve ever come to wishing my life was over. We had people that waited in the store for 3-4 hours, only to walk away without a phone. To show you how great Apple is, my manager gave someone a gift card in the amount of an iPhone, but she had to wait until after she cleared the flag on her account for being a corporate. It was about 4 months before we could sell phones to corporate customers which is ridiculous!
Ironically, I’ve never had problems with AT&T 3G service where I live. To be fair, I don’t know if even Verizon could have handled all the network traffic the iPhones have cost. That is, had they been smart enough not to pass on the iPhone from the start. Lol.
I switched from Verizon to ATT to get the first gen iPhone, and since then have upgraded to the 3G iPhone, and intend on getting the iPhone 4. I’ve never noticed a significant difference between ATT and Verizon service; maybe only a little bit in some rural areas.
However, where my in-laws live, on a mountain in a rural area, ATT actually has better service than Verizon.
As to the ordering systems, etc…I can assure you that with new launches of high demand products Verizon has its problems. I remember when some new Blackberry products came out, there were the same type of problems with early orders, product fulfillment, etc…and these items were not nearly selling in the same numbers as the iPhone.
I can bet that Verizon or any carrier would have difficulty handling the volume of pre-orders/ early purchases, etc. That doesn’t mean they shouldn’t improve but it’s not unique to ATT.
I use Sprint and it’s garbage. I’d love to switch to anything else once my contract is up.
What’s a crappy cell provider?
The one that you’re currently paying for.
(for Americans, at least)
What is embarrasing is this level of gadget hype. Its a phone. A bad phone. Get over it, and start counting how many perfectly good, functioning cell phones are discarded every year. Because of hype, nothing else.
I’ve been an AT&T customer from the time they were AT&T, then Cingular and now AT&T again. The ‘More Bars in More Places’ is such a crock and must refer to places to drink because after dealing with them that’s what you’re driven to do. But why should they change their practices? Somewhere in their tall buildings a bunch morbidly obese cigar smoking execs are laughing their way to their mansions and yachts because they know that even though their service blows, as long as they have gadgets like the iPhone, people will continue to be their customers. We’ll continue to eat all the crap they feed us because we don’t want to go without the toys.
Vincent,
FYI as a local LA resident that lives in the southbay and works all across town. A sure fire method to solve the dropped calls is LA is to turn off 3G. Yes it’s slower but it’s a sacrifice I make to not be embarrassed when trying to have a business conversation on my iphone.
Chuck
I have heard numerous complaints about the new iphone and AT&T’s service. Thankfully, there are other options available. If you are in need of a hew phone, I highly recommend the HTC EVO 4G through Sprint. I believe it to be better than the iphone 4 in many ways and I have had no problems with Sprint’s network thus far.
Against my better judgement I have once again purchased the worst phone (best media device) on the planet!!! The iphone 4… and it still sucks as a phone!!!!!
