Video: “How Technology is Influencing Storytelling & Film”
I had the pleasure to be part of a panel at the Sundance Film Festival last week. Adobe invited filmmakers Sharlto Copley, Rob Legato, Jacob Rosenberg and myself to share some of our thoughts on where all of this new technology is taking us as filmmakers.
You might recognize Sharlto as the lead actor in District 9 and more recently "The A-Team." Rob Legato has worked on just about every major movie it seems as VFX Supervisor – from Titanic, Apollo 13, to Avatar and Hugo – he’s a VFX guru and he is a successful Director/DP as well. Jacob Rosenberg works with Bandito Brothers and heads their technology amongst many other things and most recently with DP Shane Hurlbut on "Act of Valor" which was shot mostly (70% or so) with Canon HDSLRs. Jacob also has a great documentary coming out soon at an upcoming festival – but I have to let him make that announcement himself.
This was a really great group to be a part of – I was definitely honored to be part of it. We had a great discussion on where technology is taking us, some of the challenges and successes we’ve experienced as filmmakers, and I think most of you will find some very good nuggets of wisdom in the video as well. I know I had a blast being part of it and can attest to it being an unusually good panel in terms of the content that was shared.
that was really informative… it confirms my way of shooting really low budget films that it’s not the tools that you use but the content, and the tools comes second.
i used to believe in getting the most expensive equipments just to look cool, but then, all the DSLRs came out and I can shoot better quality for the same budget.
PS… regarding emails, still waiting for an answer. 😉
Hi.Can you tell me about Canon 5D mark II’s settings.
Do i have to leave the exposure settings?Image settings?
Very Cool Vincent. Thanks for posting.
That is a fantastic video, Vincent. You guys clarified some questions I’ve had for a while about filmmaking. Thank you guys so much for sharing your experiences and knowledge. The things you guys share here are extremely important for beginners like myself. In particular, focusing on the content and great storytelling rather than getting too engrossed the technology. That is something overlooked by many filmmakers.
hey thanks vincent for posting it ….. its great !!!!!

It was an incredibly fun group!
Just finished watching it. That was very enjoyable. Some great topics covered and it does look like a great panel of speakers. Thanks for sharing 🙂 And thanks for not shutting down the blog back when Reverie came out 🙂

I’m glad I didn’t shut down the blog!
This was a very interesting watch. Thanks for posting. I wonder if Rob Legato feels that Hugo is going to be somewhat crippled when it gets its BluRay/DVD release due to the fact that a majority of those viewers will be seeing it in 2D.
Awesome Interview!!!!
Vincent I need your help, I’m trying to see how much support we can get for 120fps out of the 5D mark ii. Please somehow get this information to go viral, I’m posting everywhere. Let’s advance technology a step further!!!! See my post here:

I doubt the internal circuitry of the camera can support it – would love to see it though of course…
Hmm guys… I can’t watch the video. Has it been dropped or something?
Hello Vincent,
Do you think that Eos 1D-X is better than 5D mark II in independant movie making?
I’d like to invest in a C-300 for my long movie but it’s too expensive. Till now i’m not really convinced by a 7D or 5D mark II for an action movie. 1D-X can be better, can it be a kind of compromise between C-300 and 5D mark II?

The 1Dx has slightly better compression and much better ISO performance – but is otherwise identical to the 1D MKIV (and close to the 5D MKII which has a full frame chip.) The C300 is an entirely new camera MADE for cinema / video. Whereas the 1Dx is made for still and happens to shoot video.
Big Thanks! I’m from Myanmar where really need an update knowledge. Knowledge which u gave was very huge valuables for me. Thanks.
