The New Canon 5D MkIV – The Perfect Balance
We always say the latest camera is “the best and the hottest” and other such hyperboles. From what I’ve seen so far (been playing with it for awhile and more to come on that…) the newly announced Canon 5D MkIV may be one of the very best all around cameras ever made.
When you consider performance vs weight and size and the PACKED features such as HDR video and stills, excellent low light performance, dual pixel (think Lytro and focusing in post or adjusting bokeh slightly), 4K video (with effectively super 35mm crop so you can use cine lenses…), amazing AF with 61 sensors and works with face detection and touch screen both in stills and video, anti flicker for video, very smooth ramping of focus and exposure in video in auto modes.
It’s definitely the best combination of Still + Video camera I’ve used to date.
GPS, WIFI (can link multiple cameras to identical atomic clock), NFC, wonderful touchscreen that accesses pretty much every single feature with a tap of a finger, easy connection to smartphones from camera, and yes! Even a built in intervalometer 😉
Basically: pretty much everything you’d want in a body that size and for this market and the perfect BALANCE if you will of megapixels and low light performance as well… The Canon 5Ds was my default go to still camera … Now it’s going to be a tough call as this camera definitely adds 1-2 stops (haven’t done scientific testing but have shot side by side and its visibly improved to the naked eye) in low light and sees much more into the shadows when side by side. By nature higher MP and density sensors will always perform slightly less than lower MP sensors as the individual pixels are smaller and capture less light – pretty much a hard and fast rule across the board.
I love my 50MP cameras … But my computers still have a hard time churning on all of that data… 30 MP is kinda perfect for most out there!
As mentioned low light is impressive on this camera. The Canon 1DX MKII is a BEAST but overkill for most non-sports/nature/extreme photogs in terms of weight and size and I prefer a 30MP body personally.
All of these news sensors from Canon are crazy, crazy sharp and have a superbly impressive resolving power in stills! A pleasure to look at in LR on Apple Retina displays …
The Dynamic Range is just silly. This camera also has an impressive HDR mode (both still + video) as well as multi exposure HDR with automatic alignment of multi-exposures built in (so you can do multi exposure HDR handheld.)
You can apply looks (and change existing after you shoot then), crops and reprocess images IN camera and rate images on the back with a RATE button or easily by using the touch screen and you can pinch to zoom and flick left or right like on your smartphones … GPS will log your paths and moves and of course embed in EXIF.
You can also customize the display of information in your viewfinders, pretty much every button although I’m guessing you’ll find yourself using mostly the touch screen from now on … And has a sleek option to turn on a grid in the prism/viewfinder as well as a leveler for roll and tilt. This camera is also impressively weather-sealed and uses the same LP-E6 batteries (yay!) we’ve all been using for years.
There are actually so many functions that the manual is 600 pages and yes, I had to read it to figure out what all these bells and whistles do!
My how far we’ve come since the initial 5D & for many of us the 5DMKII!
The size and weight of this camera and 30 MP will find its way to be the perfect companion to many out there! It lives just perfectly between the 1DX MKII and 5DS/R … A little BEAST!

Thanks for the writeup. HDR video seems to be a side note in every review, yet for those of us who haven’t shot on a RED camera with actual HDR video, it’s pretty huge. Any idea how the camera does it, and if that changes the file format at all?

From the perspective of someone that is sponsored by Canon, that would be the best post however in reality that is far from be the best combination of stills + video.

I would have to politely disagree with this and I’d like to share my reasoning why. GPS, Wifi, 4K, etc. are all things that have been in cameras for a few years now. They are all things we expect should be in cameras at this point. The dual pixel RAW feels much more like a gimmick, because who is going to rely on Canon’s software rather than programs such as Capture One or Adobe’s offerings. Dual pixel AF has been around since the 70D. Everything that the 5D Mark IV received yesterday are features that bring this camera up to date in 2015. By the end of this year or mid next year, Sony (maybe not Fuji), will have pushed the boundary with their mirrorless cameras to new levels that leave this camera behind. Canon is slow to update the 5D line. I can’t buy this camera expecting it to be modern technology when on day one, it’s already a year too late. I own both Canon and Fuji, both have their ups and downs. However, every 6 months Sony and Fuji does more while Canon seems to do less and less. Competition is supposed to be a healthy thing where we get better cameras and better technology, Fuji and Sony see this. Canon seems to be oblivious that there are better options out there. Market share isn’t something that should allow them relax. Canon should be pushing to be the best camera out there and they haven’t been doing that for the past 2-3 years.

@Allan Higa, YEah Allan, just adding to your comment, Canon is in fact doing a few things to keep up but that is for the higher market, with cameras like c300 mkII or C700 which is around 30K. They are totally forgetting the indie filmakers and the entry level cinema cameras.

IMO – specs don’t tell the story. On paper my Sony a6300 should be kick the snot out of my Canon 70D. In reality, real world use… I wish I would have bought the EOS M3. I don’t hate my 6300, but I’m getting there…

I have preordered but I’m still pondering if the 5DSR is really the body for me. I live on a tripod and don’t worry that much about size/storage issues but do really care about image quality. I can never seem to glean from the reviews (aside from cropping and file-size related detail) how image quality equates across the Canon bodies. With everything else equal, is a 20MP image from a 1DX2 better or equal to a 20MP image from a 5DSR? Does the 1DX2 impart something special when it’s comes to clean color, the intangible “look” of the image, etc. If I knew the 5DSR image quality (not just file size) was better across the board I’d go with it. I’m counting on the IV sensor image quality maybe being a bit better is some way, albeit at only 30.4MP. Lokk forward to hearing more from you on the 5D IV.

I like my 1DC, 1DX2 and 5DsR and I have ordered the 5D4, which has a number of welcome features.
But I miss many of the great basic features that especially Sony already offers, and Canon easily could have implemented.
I would even spend more than 4000 euros if the 5D4 could do (not only for video, also for many photo related situations!):
– Filming and reviewing through an EVF
– Silent Photo Shooting
– Focus Peaking
– Zebra
– 4K shooting in Full Frame
– 4K shooting in any zoom range between Full Frame and the middle 8 MP crop
– 4K shooting with 60fps
– 1080p shooting with 120fps
– 720p shooting with 240fps
– 4K shooting in 3840 width
– 4K shooting with an efficient codec
– Shooting Video in Log Mode (or better RAW)
– HDMI out in 4K
– Shooting in 3K and up to 50fps
– Adapting APS-Crop Lenses (especially when 4K only can be done in 1.74x crop)
– Installation of apps
– Audio and other things through a Multi Hot Shoe
– and have an articulating screen.
Only the first two points might be limited to a camera that has to be mirrorless, so it is not an unrealistic wish list!
I hope Canon will soon release a mirrorless 5D4 pro cinema version with EF-Mount, and not come up with a completely different mount for large sensor mirrorless cameras.
As much as we love Canon, it is a bit annoying that most cameras seem to be artificially limited through their marketing and sales departments!

They are incapable of protecting the country in peace time, might as well disband the Bolivarian armed forces. What a joke. This guy just insulted all the state security employees of Venezuela, implying they are not even capable of something Colombia does every day. By extension, he insulted Chavez as the commander of these forces. I say off with his head!

@ Doug Laurent.
Finally, your making the point I’ve been making since the 5DM4 came out, that Canon is before and all, a powerhouse Marketing machine.
I have a 5DM2, and although it has serious limits, I have made serious efforts to exploit the most of all of its features, the most of my software features and teaching and challenging myself to becoming a better photographer before just simply throwing in the towel and spending a bundle more on a new camera. But the 5DM2 has its limits and I’ll have to upgrade soon to continue improving my skills.
Most professionals I’ve met up with and even the Canon Representative whom gave the product launch presentation of the MK4 at my local shop had to admit that the dual pixel option is more of a “gadget to market option”, he was very conservative about the true benefits of this option for real time usage. All advanced photographers at the launch said they weren’t considering this camera because of this option.
This being said, I am a bit enjoyed by Canon for their exponential micro-step approach in product release to market and agree will Allan Higa, that they are behind as a leader of “latest” technology.
I am starting to look at other brands, Sony being one of them, I am curious about this product. I did try on many occasions the Leika M9 and although it being a totally different type of camera, I have to say it blew my mind away.
Trying and comparing is the way to go, and you have to do it across different brands, not just Canon.
thanks for the input Doug, very good information
