HDDSLR Indie Filmmaker Kit

Check out the full kit bundle on B&H, which includes the pieces listed below!

This configuration ups the ante in terms of price and professionalism, providing a solid base for expansion while still being compact enough to be managed by a single operator. This kit is based around Redrock Micro’s DSLR Field Cinema Deluxe Bundle V2 (pieces listed below) giving the operator a sturdy hand-held kit that comes sticks-ready. The geared follow focus and matte box allow for even finer control over your cinematic masterpiece while allowing multiple people (an operator and AC) to work simultaneously, contributing an higher level of quality and professionalism to your video work.

The real key to this rig is it’s ability to grow with you as a filmmaker. It provides everything you need to make a film while providing you with a platform to add any number of accessories as conditions permit and new and inventive sequences require. I would recommend this kit to anyone who is really serious about filmmaking, and someone who is willing to make the initial investment as this kit will really pay off in the long run.

PLEASE NOTE:  You can read a LOT more detail about rigs, lenses, tripods, steadicams, jibs, lights, batteries, cards, software – YOU NAME IT as well as WHY I use it the PROS and CONS of each and examples on the MY GEAR section of this site.

TRIPOD:  As you have heard me mention before – not all films are shot on a hand-held rig – and so some sort of rigid support is necessary.  If you want a tripod that can handle the support system you can build here – then  I recommend the 504HD Head and the 546 Video Pro Legs by Manfrotto.  These are professional grade sticks that will last you a life time.  Head over to the Tripod Page to check them out.

microMatteBox Bundle B&H Mfr. Site
The microMatteBox Bundle is a 15mm lightweight configuration rod-mounted matte box. It is a swing-away style matte box allowing for easy access to lenses up to 114mm front diameter. V-LCD50-HDMI 5" Monitor B&H Mfr. Site
The 5" Marshall Electronics Monitor is a great substitute for the DSLR’s back panel LCD screen, allowing the operator to easily judge focus and operate the camera. The best feature about this monitor is its ability to run solely off of 4 AA batteries, reducing overall weight and making this monitor more portable than ever.

microLink 4 Riser B&H Mfr. Site
The microLink 4 Riser is used with the 9" 15mm Carbon Fiber Rods to convert the rig from a center balanced system to an offset system. Instead of looking directly into an on-board monitor, the operator would now be looking directly into an optical viewfinder (such as the Z-Finder) attached to the back of your DSLR (like the Canon 5D or 7D).
9" 15mm Carbon Fiber Rods B&H Mfr. Site
The 9" Carbon Fiber Rods would be used in tandem with the microLink 4 Riser to convert the rig from a center balanced system to an offset system. The camera would now attach to these 9" Rods directly in front of the operator via the DSLR Baseplate.

The Chrosziel MB 456 Academy Matte Box is a great alternative to the microMatteBox. This matte box features two fully rotatable 5×5 or 4×5.65 drop-in style filter holders, as well as mounting points for an eyebrow and a set of french flags.
Z-Finder 2.5x B&H Mfr. Site
The Z-Finder attaches directly to the DSLR’s LCD screen to not only serve as a viewfinder–both magnifying the image and allowing for easier focus control–but it also acts as yet another point of stabilization against the body.
