Log & Transfer Plugin for HDDSLRs & FCP

For those looking for a more elegant workflow to use your Canon HDDSLR footage with Final Cut Pro - Canon and Apple have announced a new plug-in for Final Cut Pro - named:  EOS E1.  The plugin is set to appear on Apple’s website - although the link doesn’t yet appear to be live…

The plugin is designed to import video from the following Canon’s DSLRs: The EOS-7D, the 5D MK II, and the 1D MK IV.

The  plug-in will support FCP’s Log and Transfer dialogue, which lets people select and mark in and out points on their video before copying it off-camera.   At the same time, people can add custom metadata such as Roll, Scene, Take information during the ingest process, and begin editing work before all clips have been transferred. The plug-in will be a free download for owners of Final Cut Pro 6 or later.  Users may note that this plugin has many of the same features that I mentioned earlier here in a previous post.

I have not been able to confirm as to whether or not this plugin will be supporting timecode - timecode based on the camera’s internal clock that is to say - not “real” timecode of course.   You should note that you can sync multiple cameras to a computer via USB…

great news, but anybody knows some log alternative for non-FCP users at ingest process with info like roll, scene, etc…

(maybe a simple doc/pdf template)

thx in advance.

How do syncing with multiple cameras works?

@THEGEEK, Excellent actually. Remember it’s not TRUE timecode - so you’re not going to be “frame accurate” - but an editor receiving a LOT of material can make much more sense of what was shot first and on what day etc… not a PERFECT or even a PROFESSIONAL tool just yet- but darn good for most!

It’s totally off of the topic, but I just wanted to know if you’re still following the Olympics. Ciao!

Let’s make sure we word this right as the plug-in is supposed assign timecode to the files based on the internal clock of the camera. The camera itself doesn’t generate timecode.

A perfect solution IF Canon would work on the audio AGC. Either let us set recording levels manually or by providing four AGC levels just like Nikon does.

As it is now I can bring Video and noisy audio in but still have to sync the externally recorded audio.

For a lot of applications recording sound internally using an external preamp is of sufficient quality. Once AGC is off the 5D preamps are quiet but I’m always a little bit nervous when using Magic Lantern. Also who guarantees it will still work with the future 24/25p update.

Anyone know if it will work with Final Cut Express?

@Max Schulte, I don’t think it will unfortunately.

fantastic. It’ll be great to add the meta data to files instead of just copying & pasting them wholesale. Thanks for the update- wish Canon would email us with this stuff, too!

Is it sufficiently better than MPEG Streamclip? If not, I’m not changing.

I just downloaded it from the Apple web site. I have to wait until I get home from work to try it on my mac.

Does the plugin only be used in Canon’s DSLRs: The EOS-7D, the 5D MK II, and the 1D MK IV?
