Good News & A Bit of Deja Vu
Friday October 23rd 2009, 11:53 pm

The good news is that “Nocturne” will be back up at some point soon.   The long and short of the situation is that Canon’s request that I take “Nocturne” down temporarily had absolutely nothing to do with me, the short film, or any technical reason whatsoever.

Canon is large, multi-national corporation - and at times things can hit a snag.   I had a meeting with a few Canon USA executives this week in New York at the Photo Plus Expo - and they went as far as to ask me to communicate to you that they are genuinely apologetic that this has happened.

The only bad news for me - is that this is a bit too much of Deja Vu - and that I did everything that I could to prevent a repeat of last year (when Reverie was also pulled down after it was initially posted - and then reposted a few days later on Canon’s site.)    This kind of “excitement” is not something that I look forward to - and I had wished to have this video available to share with everyone for the week of the release of the Canon 1D MKIV.  It was awkward to say the least to be presenting on stage this week at the Expo - and showing “Reverie” again - a video that was more than one year old.

And the last “bad” news - is that I haven’t been given an exact date as to when the video can go back up just yet.    The sooner the better of course.

Thanks for your patience.

That is good news. I’ve been checking daily to see a positive update on this. Hopefully the video can be up again. I was able to watch it at work without sound once..but didn’t get a chance to see it at home yet.

Still no ” Why ? ” though, and for this reason alone its confusing and frustrating for the consumer both pro and hobbyist to not get a a “Why”.

Truth be told, I am a Canon shooter, have been for 7 years now. I am frustrated while Canon is getting its butt kicked in some high-ISO noise comparison up against the D3 and this camera looked to really bring that to at least a closer race…

Yet Canon, for some reason, decides that a full feature from the camera, along with other photographers of their “Explorers of light” program are forced to drop images from their review because the “pre-production” disclaimer all of a sudden isn’t good enough for “Joe Public”

So frustrating.

So Vincent, nice work, as always, you remain an inspiration…

I hope you’re check clears ;) , ’cause not being satisfied by getting your work the attention it deserves is hopefully placed under ground with paying some bills, taking the family out and having food on the table…

Yea, I thought Canon asked for the takedown so they could release it at PDN, but they didn’t show Nocturne at PDN, it was very puzzling since they had other videos made from the 1d nk IV.

@James Cheng, Pretty bad videos too… the sample photos and videos that Canon releases with their cameras are “snapshots” IMHO…. Nikon does a far better job showing what a “pro” can do and what their cameras can give photographers.

Vincent does Canon a huge service with his videos… If I was comparing Canon to Nikon solely based on the films and sample photos they provide… Nikon wins…. Vincent shows the professional side of Canon - not the snapshot side… but Canon doesn’t care about that.

I’ve been looking at upgrading my camera - it is fairly old (1DM2) - I was looking forward to the 1DM4, but honestly, there are still some elements about it that I don’t care for, so Nikon will likely get my check. Canon’s poor Public Relations didn’t help their position in my decision.

Well, I for one am a die hard Nikon shooter, but I’m still disappointed about how Canon approaches it’s PR (and marketing, considering some other local issues). I’d be happy to see Canon closing the race on the ISO war, because this will push Nikon to put out even more fab gear.

In any case, keep up the good work, Vincent! You’re an inspiration to say the least…

At some point, Vince, you have to ask some questions about your relationship with Canon, and whether this annual back-and-forth is doing your credibility any good. I think you’re already pretty tight with the company, which probably raises issues for some people. To have this video thing play out regularly probably makes some people think it’s all publicity-seeking. Caution…

Reply

Vincent Laforet Reply:

@Louis, Louis - I respect your comment. And frankly the issue you raise is one that’s been bothering me the most since Canon asked me to remove the video as a courtesy. This is something I would never do for publicity. Period. The stress, grief, and concerns such as yours - are simply not worth it at all.

One thing is for sure: if it HAD been for publicity - the video would likely have gone up 2-3 days later… I hope you can see that the video is still not up and likely won’t be for a few more days… I don’t think anyone benefits whatsoever from this video being pulled down.

Hi Vincent,

I think Canon hast still a lot to learn, dealing with photographers who like their products and promote their company. It isn’t that easy with Canon here in Germany as well, even as a representative from the biggest news agency. For different reasons (first of all the colors) I don’t like Nikon equipment, but their service in Europe is exemplary. I like your work and how you always find the time, to talk to colleagues. Thank you.

Cheers from Cologne. Rolf.

I’m a Canon customer and all, but this kind of stuff just shows how they can’t get out of their own way some times. It’s sad.

This is just another way that Canon doesn’t realize what their customers want, and that the customers are what keep the company alive.

Another example is how Canon released the Canon 5D MkII in Canada, gave it a price when they pre-released it, took orders, and then jacked up their price on it before they delivered the stock and they made everyone that paid for their cameras pay the additional amount.

Wonder if they are going to repeat that mistake again, wouldn’t surprise me if they did, since Canon can’t seem figure out that having something like your wonderful video that promotes their product is a good thing.

Again, another clear cut point showing how big multi-national companies really don’t care about their customers, only the mighty dollar

I’ve generally been very happy with my Canon gear but I’m starting to really dislike the company. It’s not just this latest - it’s the pattern. At the very least I’m going to stop buying Canon printers and such. There’s more “system intertia” with the SLRs but I’ll definitely be checking out the competition before buying a new one.

Till Canon stops to play a dead bear, photogs can at least admire the living one in Vincent Munier’s
Summer Variations shot with D3S.

Simply amazing and inspirational preview of high ISO capabilities … and no crazy executive is asking him to take it down! [Thankful]

Let me get this straight. They asked you to issue their apology for them? Man Vincent, I’m thinking Nikon would have paid you handsomely to shoot that with the D3S and drop it on the market on announcement day.

Next time .. get Canon to pay you for your skills. That way, you won’t feel so bad when they try to manipulate the usage of your work in this manner. You brought this on yourself for not getting this in writing before you took the assignment. Live and learn my friend : )

It obviously communicates as appalling internally as it does with it’s customers. Vincent- I wouldn’t bother next time, much as we all love your talents.

@Simon Jacobs, Hi Simon, having some new relations with Canon, has given me this insight. They had know idea that this camera was going to explode like this. Canon literally put this HD movie mode on the camera as an after thought, for photo journalist to grab sound bites in the field. They are still playing catch up and trying to chart a course in uncharted waters. They have a whole new team put into place and give them 6 months, they will turn this around and start movin’ and shakin’. I can not wait for the future, it is so exciting.

Reply

Comment by Simon Jacobs 10.25.09 @ 2:16 pm

The frustrating thing is that the film, and the potential it has for generating excitement about the camera, looses a little momentum with each passing day. The fact that it remains available on youtube is small comfort when the hits it’s receiving should really be directed to your site where they could do your business the most good. I sincerely hope for a speedy resolution so you can maximize on your efforts while the buzz is still red hot.

Very very very impressive for low light environemnts recording , it s beautiful; The things i think it s very strange for a lot of futur video users; it s why this beautiful camera with very high quality iso 6400 record just in H.264 and not also ( i mind with an external module) in raw or dng …. ? ( the video you ve done would ve been so much impressive in Raw )

“..and they went as far as to ask me to communicate to you that they are genuinely apologetic that this has happened.”

That´s kinda effed up to tell you the truth, if Canon is going to apologize they should do it officialy with a press release and if there´s someone they should be apologetic that someone is YOU, because it is a serious disrespect that they put you in the middle of whatever internal sh·t storm they have.

If Canon wants to apologize with you or with someone else they should do it in a proper way their public image has received many punches because some of the problems they have been experiencing and this doesn´t helps to make it any better in my eyes, I see it a serious lack of respect to you.

Vincent,
I hate to be a pest but I’m wondering if there is any update on Nocturne. I’m asking because I kind of decided in early November to make it the pin in my December 1 grenade… Let me explain.

I’ve been building my fledgling commercial photography business on a camera platform that is not fully supported by the industry and it’s time to make the jump ahead of the tax man. I’ll be switching my camera bodies, lenses, flashes and maybe even my triggering system over to Nikon or Canon in the next few weeks. Since relationship and support are driving my decision more than gear the Nocturne take down request actually registered higher on my radar than the video itself.

So, while this may seem a little petty, I told myself in early November that if Nocturne wasn’t back up by December 1 I would go with Nikon. Believe me, a LOT more went into the decision, but when it became obvious that I couldn’t make a bad decision, barring something more earth shattering from one or the other, I settled on Nocturne and December 1 as my final decision making crutch. So, until midnight anyway, I’m curious where things stand, any word?

All that aside, I’m also very interested in seeing you motivated to continue this type of project on future releases so I’m hoping Canon does come through for you, if not today, soon. Thanks for all you do, not just for Canon, but for the industry as a whole.

There is a massive change underway in the mobile media market as it becomes unshackled from the operators’ portals that have dominated it for a decade, all without having made any significant inroads into the content use of mobile users. The new capped data packages, fuelled by further competition, will see a total revamp of the mobile media market. It will no longer be based on portals but on direct services by content and services providers via open source phones and mobile-friendly Internet-based services. The next step is the continued emergence of m-commerce and in particular m-payment services.

. Its all about chasing shadows.
By that I mean latching on to this or that latest, most innovative idea that some self styled money making guru has put out in the hope it’ll go viral and make them a lot of money off the backs of all the headless chickens who will follow them blindly down a blind alley. Its a shame but a truism nonetheless that people will follow where someone they see as an expert leads. Even if they lead them to certain disaster, which is what most of the gurus tend to do to their flocks.
