Collision Conference a Week Away
Saturday August 22nd 2009, 9:57 pm

I will be one of the Keynote speakers a the “Collision Conference” in Los Angeles next Saturday.   I hear that there are still a few spots available.  This should be a very interesting conference that brings together both still photographers and videographers to discuss what I like to call the new “HD-SLRs” such at the Canon 5D MKII.

I for one look forward to meeting many of the people that I know will be attending - and to hearing Rodney Charters (ASC, CSC) and Shane Hurlbut (ASC) speak - the two have been on the forefront of digital cinema in terms of applying new technologies to major productions and motion pictures.

For more information please got to the ImageMechanics site here.

There is more information on the conference agenda below:

Location: LA Film School 6363 Sunset Blvd, Hollywood, CA 90028

The Collision Conference is divided up into two tracks over two days. Track one is focused on hybrid photography using cameras like the Canon 5D Mark II and the RED ONE. Track two is a look at using the RED ONE and VDSLRs for indie film/TV productions, music videos and feature films.

Saturday August 29th Hybrid Photography - Incorporating Video Into Still Photography
Saturday will feature speakers and demonstrations relating to VCS (Video Capture for Stills) and is intended for photographers and videographers interested in delivering stills and video to their clients using a single capture device. Michael Britt will open the day with a look at the equipment available along with the workflow that Image Mechanics has developed in order to stay competitive in this hybrid market. Alexx Henry will speak about his experiences shooting “Living Posters” with the RED™ ONE motion picture camera and the Canon 5D Mark II. Next, Frank Rohmer will give an overview of editing software and VDSLR workflow. There will be a VCS live shoot in the concourse area during the lunch break followed by a presentation from Smugmug entitled “Ignite the Fusion” where they will screen and discuss projects hosted by Smugmug including Vincent Laforet’s Reverie. The keynote speaker of the day is Vincent Laforet who will be speaking about his experiences shooting Reverie and his transition into hybrid photography and filmmaking.

Sunday August 30th Digital Filmmaking with the RED ONE, 5D Mark II and the GH1
Sunday will focus on DSLR filmmaking with Director of Photography, Shane Hurlbut ASC as the keynote speaker. Shane has used the Canon 5D Mark II in innovative ways and will talk about the future of these hybrid cameras in motion pictures. Liam Finn and Illya Friedman will discuss using Cinema Lenses on the Panasonic GH1 to create the cinema look for DSLR Filmmaking. Ted Shilowitz from RED will present “The Future is Now… and What’s Coming Next for 4K and Beyond” where he will screen 4K RED footage and discuss advantages of the RED system for photographers and filmmakers. The Cinematographer for the television show 24, Rodney Charters ASC CSC, will talk about “Creating a Hollywood Esthetic Without a Crew” focusing on a recent project in North Korea using a RED camera as well as blending 5D Mark II footage with RED on television projects. Last up before Shane’s keynote speech is a look at what’s new in Final Cut Pro 7 by Frank Rohmer.

@Alex, I don’t think the organizers have any plans of doing that at this point.

Hi Vincent,
Great to hear from you. Congrats on your keynote address. Conferences such as this are so important to the community of professional photo/video content creators that some means of access should be available to the entire community. I for one would like to attend but am unable. I am hoping that with the technology available that these conferences, seminars and conventions will soon be available via the net.
Keep up the awesome work.
Best Regards,
Ron

Vincent,

Boy, do I wish I could attend this interesting conference. Some many things to learn right there for you. I love your work and would like to know what if any work around’s exist for seamless recording with the 5d Mark II?

I am storyboarding a project now and would like to make my first attempt with a 5D Mark II. It seems that you can only do 12 minutes of continuous record and if you have a scene longer than that I wondered how it is accomplished

Thanks

Vincent Laforet Reply:

@Dennis Sabo, Dennis - no there is no way for seamless recording at this point. But I have seen some interesting workarounds and external recording devices that are out there - and we just need for Canon to take note of this and change a few things on their end with future cameras to allow this to happen. By this I am referring to future cameras and having Canon add new features to those future cameras - I don’t think we will see any new features added to the Canon 5D MKII - you never know of course… but I wouldn’t hold my breath. Historically the 5D MKII firmware that was released a few months ago that added big features was pretty unprecedented.

Hi Vincent - I’m a Nikon shooter and am so ready to combine video with stills…is there hope for us people? If so, what camera do you recommend. If not, what video camera would you suggest for the time being. I’m mainly capturing family stories. Thank you!
