I’ve had a chance to get a hold of the 5D MKII on several occasions - seven to be specific (2 of those nights were spent shooting the first film, Reverie.) I’ve felt compelled to try to create something with it each time I’ve had the camera in my hands. And I will admit this camera has brought me back the closest to the feeling I had at the age of 15 when I had my first camera and a few rolls of Tri-X to burn through. Simply put - it’s so much fun and pure.
You’ll see some footage shot with Tilt-shift lenses from the air - my first time with video - as well as one of the last shots of the series that was shot with a full motion picture Steadicam rig. All of the footage was shot with several different prototypes of the Canon EOS 5D MKII that I was allowed to borrow at different intervals - cut in Final Cut Studio, and graded in Color. I’m still in the middle of post-productions with almost every one of these shoots - busier shooting than editing to be honest. But I thought I’d share some of this footage as most of your are likely to receive your production 5DMKIIs sometime this week (those that put their names down first of course.)
Each one of the projects was a collaboration with quite a few talented people - included the group from Acroback, and Rodney Decker, a student of mine from the Eddie Adams Workshop (boxer series.) Special thanks to Roland Wood, Steve, and Daniel DeLaRossa, Billy Grafton, John, and Terry Watson. And special thanks to the awesome pilots Aaron Fitzgerald, Michael, and Adam Cerny. Haven’t had a chance to do credits - but I need to credit the following music: “Roads” by Portishead, from the album “Dummy”& ”Chemtrails” by Beck from the album “Modern Guilt.” The initial edit was done by Andre Costantini, and I then ruined his edit by adding recent work from the past 2 shoots. Thanks also to Alex Bickel who graded “Reverie” - you can see a few of those clips in the above sequence - I will put the graded (color corrected) version of the short up soon.
I’m going to try to find the time to write down some thoughts as well as some tips and tricks about this camera - so that you can all hit the ground running. First tip: if you’re editing in Final Cut Studio - you can do it ok in the native H.264 - but it’s worth converting the footage to Apple’s ProRes (HQ) format for much smoother results (as a first step - i.e. BEFORE you start editing - but you can of course do it at any time)

Great stuff and very visually stimulating.
Makes me laugh though how many still photographers long to do moving images, and I longed to do stills, as I didn’t have the burden of the crews etc. to tell a story! Maybe the 5ive D (and others) are gonna be the devils advocate! Love your blog mate, great source of inspiration.

Vincent, great mood, love the colors, the cityscape just pops. One of the sharpest shots imo is the older man crying — that and it is a moving shot.
I trust you: what do you say to the people discussing that even though you can lock exposure, it is not true aperture priority? One has to trick the camera for shallow dof in daylight? Thanks.

Yes - it was produced with Final Cut Suite’s “Color” Software - a truly powerful app.
Very impressive once again, I’m not alone when I say: more more more! I must also agree with you music makes a massive impact. My favourite shot from that sequence is the heli pan of one building, unveiling the sole figure on top of the black building helipad. Breathtaking.

One can definitely get longer sequences - I just haven’t had much time with the camera to be honest. When I do - I try to work quickly and make the most of the time…
Hi Vincent,
Love the footage so far! I work in a post production company and we’re pretty excited about the likes of the d90, 5d and scarlet as means of getting high res shallow focus footage but the first one we’ve tested, the d90, puts far too much compression on the output files for it to be usable - unfortunately there’s no way to take a feed from the live view and record outside the camera either. Would it be possible for you to put up a very short clip (5 - 10 seconds) of anything to see what the footage quality is like raw from the camera? The d90 was lovely but would start to fall apart with colour correction applied and since the resolution is only 720p we wouldn’t be able to downsize to tv res to remove the artifacting. The 5d is nearly twice the vertical height of standard pal tv so it’d be a far better bet!

John- once I get a production camera - I can put a full length clip up. I cannot do so with the pre-production cameras that I’ve been using. That’s part of the deal unfortunately.
You’ll probably find some of the files work for what you need - and some won’t. The compression cannot be controlled - and you cannot “steal” the signal from the HDMI output… this is indeed a first generation camera - not quite perfect for everyone’s needs - but it opens up a lot of doors. I can tell you the quality is definitely superior to the D90 - but not as good as the RAW footage coming out of the RED - as this footage is compressed H.264.
Great Vincent, but I must admit that I am a bit frustrated to see that you have some urban exploration style shots. I was planning to be the first one to shot these! Other than my jealousy, it is great and I love the grading!

Really nice ! I am waiting eagerly for my camera and we will do a research project about whether it will change the industry or not. Iam especially curious if the sound recording will be usable for proffesionals.

Not that much to be honest. Maybe one hour every two weeks on average. Sometime I get jobs where I’ll do 30 hours in a little over a week - but those are pretty rare in this economy…

Long time reader, first time posting. I just want to say thank you for taking the time to try new things with video/photography and share them on your blog. This is what it’s all about. Obviously we have to pay the bills, but doing projects to push our creativity with new ideas and concepts makes our “work” much more enjoyable.
I’m come from a video production background, but do photography work too. It seems that the 5DmarkII could let me explore both worlds with top quality images. Thanks again for sharing your art.

Great stuff and thanks for the tip on converting to ProRes before the edit. Do you do that via Media manager after transferring the footage?

Can you share with us any tips/tricks you’ve found for “forcing” a large aperture manually? It would be great to shoot with a shallow depth-of-field without the camera first selecting high ISO and a slow shutter speed if those weren’t necessary (like in daylight).
Any insight you have to work the issue would really be appreciated!
And, again, beautiful images. Hope we’ll all get to see the finished outcome of your multiple projects!

It can be a bit maddening to be honest. But it CAN be done… I wish it were a tad bit easier than it is. Remember that I shot Reverie at night - so it was never an issue. I was always wide open. During the day time - it helps to point the camera at a very dark object/shadow… the aperture will open up… then point it at your subject and lock the exposure down immediately - before it reverts to f11-f22. Sometimes it works perfectly - at other times - it’s doing a bit of weird science. Remember - I’ve been working with pre-production cameras - and I haven’t had a chance to get the final product in my hands - so it’s dangerous for me to say anything for certain.

As you spend more time with the 5D Mk. II, I hope to hear your thoughts on a more “budget” oriented approach to video. While I plan to play with the video mode, I’m primarily a stills shooter and can’t justify a RedRock Micro rig or Final Cut Studio — for the moment at least. I’d be curious how you feel about Plume’s Handi-Pod or Bruce Dorn’s UBC rig to aid in handling for video shooting; likewise, what does Final Cut Express have to offer?

I haven’t had a chance to work with any of those products… I’m sure they’ll help and that someone will review them at some point. I should remind you that I didn’t use the RedRock Micro rig for “Reverie.” It’s a great platform - but not everyone “needs” it.

Depends. I’d probably go with the 5D. But the XH A1 offers you: digital zoom, two viewfinders you can rotate…sound input levels, mic etc… for what I do: mainly trying to create beautiful video that aims to look close to film - I’d go with the 5D. For some - there will be too many inherent limitations with the 5D.

Question for all the American readers/canon users. Has Canon USA raised their prices on the 5D Mark II? Canon Canada canceled all the pre-order PO’s from their distributors and made them re-order them at the higher prices, even though they accepted them prior to the price increase. The distributors (retail stores) have in turn increased their prices, even to those orders that they have received a deposit on.
Just wondering if Canon USA is conducting unethical business practices like their Canadian counter part.
Again great video and I look forward to getting my 5D Mark II (at my original price)!

To my knowledge- the price has not changed in the US.
Best shot is your T&F Shot, aerial shot and steadicam Parcour guy in this order.
Well, quite mixed with different styles but very nice clips thought. Keep on.
Unfortunately 5D MII appears to come out later and later in europe so I can’t buy it before I go on a long trip 
Inspiring and breathtaking as usual Vincent. I just adore your technique with the Tilt-Shift lens.
The stills get that surreal model landscape look with it.
Any news upon 24p yet?

Nope - not a peep. I don’t think it will happen to be honest with the production cameras. Perhaps with a later firmware update… not right now though.

The legs hanging down as the helicopter touched down should have been moving … to symbolize those of us who wish to hit the ground running with the awesome 5D Mark II.
I had planned to do a Reverie parody myself.

Dam…so much great footage and knowledge on your blog! How’s the audio with this camera? Did you hook an external mic and mount it on the hot shoe? If so what did you get? That’s one of my biggest questions right now about it. D90 doesn’t have a mic input, but the 5D does!

The best part of that video was the skateboard flip over those people. Cool!
You added a little bit of Reverie back in, but the rest leaves me puzzled.
Maybe it’s supposed to. Why was the old man with the red suspenders crying? What’s up with the dilapidated slum area building? Is that where the boxer lives, or trains?
If you shoot another one, would you consider making a sequel to Reverie? So we can find out what happened to that couple. After the guy woke up, late for his blind date, did he make it on time? Do they hit it off?
Much of this new vid had a much softer(focus)look it seems. I guess that was the stylistic intent you were going for. I hope, because otherwise, I’d probably reconsider any planned purchase of the 5D2, at least for video use.

This camera will revolutionize the independent movie industry. 30fps is great because most of the straight to DVD projects shot in 24P on DVcameras(DVX,HVX etc)are edited in 30fps because the projects are going straight to DVD anyway.

Comment by kent 11.27.08 @ 3:46 pmI was in Toronto today checking up on my pre-order asking the guys at Henrys about whether the 5d would stack up to a 3ccd minidv cam, and the guy just laughed and said no way, because…the 5d compresses everything so much when writing to a card vs uncompressed to tape. I thought, “ok video guy on commission” went to the camera counter and exactly the same response there. I know Vincents video’s look amazing but would this camera really compare to a mini dv - even an entry level one? Confused in the cold.

Would the average movie goer tell the difference between what’s shot on 5DmarkII, DVX,HVX or Panavision? If you did not know the short video ‘REVERIE was shot on the 5DmarkII,what would have been your guess of what camera REVEIRIE was shot on? HVX?F900? Again could the average person actually tell difference? I don’t think so. That’s why Maidson Avenue is taking advantage of this technology.

Thanks Eli, I guess my concern would be when this thing gets blown up. (I work mainly as a still shooter so forgive me if my questions are naive) I was so shocked at the response from the guys at the store, made me wonder if I could do commercial work with this thing, they suggested a 800.00 mini DV camera instead. Maybe I didn’t shave yesterday…

no MiniDV tape is uncompressed. SD is compressed less than HDV on tape, but the compression used by HDV is more efficient (interframe rather than intraframe-only) and the greater resolution more than makes up for any new compression artifacts when compared to SD DV.
Now HDV uses MPEG2 for compression at 25 megabits/second. The 5DmkII uses MPEG4 at ~40 megabits/second… so it’s a newer, and far more efficient codec, running with 60% more data per second than tape. So, while there are aspects of the 5D that might not make it well suited to particular video jobs compared to a miniDV camera I wouldn’t say compression is one of them. If that’s the primary argument of the guys behind the counter at your shop I’d say you need to find a different place to get advice on cameras.

Wow, Vincent! That is beautiful. The Los Angeles aerial stuff from our flight looks spectacular. Especially considering how awful the light was that day. I wish people could have seen the conditions that day to truly appreciate what you were able to create from it.

Question. Have you ever shot from a plane instead of a helicopter? From what I have been able to research a small plane would be much cheaper than a helicopter. I’m not totally sure though since most flying services keep there prices conveniently hidden.

Great footage. But what sets the Canon 5DMII apart from any other consumer or now prosumer camera is the ability to accept ALL of the lenses that Canon has ever made for it’s EOS models.In that way a person would have control of the perspective of a shot. Either a fisheye or long prime lens. It’s all about control on what you want the viewer to see.

It’s a great STILL camera that also does MOTION. Yeah, it’s the first generation, so it’s not going to be perfect, and it won’t do everything right for everyone, but you have to remember, it’s not a video camera, it’s a stills camera, that has the ability to capture motion. That’s all. However it’s going to be a powerful tool in the RIGHT hands - not everyone will be able to pick it up and make great movies - just like giving this as a stills camera to anyone does not guarantee a great photograph.
I personally don’t understand why people are getting so ramped and over excited about this camera in a negative way. There are thousands of posts on the blogs of people complaining “oh this doesn’t do 24p, this doesn’t allow full manual etc etc”…Shut Up! Let’s see what happens when it’s out, let’s see in the next year or two what Canon comes up with right? That Sanyo Jako is a toy compared to the abilities of the 5Dmk2, however in the right hands it can make some great movies…but it’s a portable video camera, that’s it’s job.

You right some people don’t understand the abilities of the 5DMII.Man the 24p argument is so funny too me. Some don’t realize is what give a movie a “film look” is the “FILM IT SELF”,not because it moves 24fps.The old school engineers way back in the 1930’s figured the best way to sync up sound that was recorded at 60cycles was to adjust the motion picture camera motors to 24fps. I think the Japanese engineers at Canon are hurting themselves laughing at this argument. They will probabably say Ok on the next model we just say it’s 24p rather than 30fps but we are not going to change anything.lol. How are we going to know,what take the camera apart to find out? lol

Andreas - you are now my new HERO! You GET it! Absolutely on point. Yes - full control is KEY. YES - 24p 1/48th is needed. BUT - this is a first generation camera.
It is what it is.
Period.
It’s far from perfect. BUT - in the right hands - it CAN do wonders. Will it be used for major motion picture projects? Unlikely. Can it do wonders in the rights hands - likely.
Everyone - please keep the comments coming. But understand that they will most likely contribute to the development of the NEXT camera. Perhaps Canon will do a firmware update. I’m guessing they’re thinking they can wait - and do all of the changes in their “next” camera. I think that’s short-sighted in this world, given how fast things are moving, someone is bound to step in first and give us “that” camera - that we’ve all been waiting for… They SHOULD make a firmware update available ASAP. BUT - it’s unlikely. Just not the way they do business - and they’ve been around for a long time. Doesn’t mean they do things perfectly - but they do tend to know what they’re doing.

Great work Vincent, as always. About the 24p thing, I have to disagree a bit. The “what makes film look like film,” argument is old and tired. But for indy film makers 24p is a technical hurdle they have to clear. 30p does not transfer well to PAL for foreign market distribution. Many distributors won’t take something mastered at 30p and the conversions to 24p or 25p have terrible motion issues. 24p can convert to 25p easily enough and to 60i with pulldown. Even 60i is preferable to 30p from a conversion standpoint. You have to deliver on a format that distributors want in order to stay in business. So although many people demand 24p reflexively with no real understanding or need in mind, it is actually much more universal for distribution purposes right now and the lack of it in this camera is something of a deal killer for many low budget film makers. Granted, that’s not it’s intended purpose, but if it were 24p I’d use it to make a low budget feature right now. Maybe next gen. Keep up the great work.

Hey man, I dig the work you doing with this camera. It’s beautiful. I’ve got a deposit down and I’m 8th on the list at a local shop so hopefully I’ll have mine sometime soon…we’ll see. My question is about doing multiple takes and exposure control. You mentioned that you have no control over the exposure of the shot. And you have to essentially ‘trick’ the camera to get the exposure you want. But can those readings be recreated? And is there a possibility of doing multiple takes with this system that have the same look. Sorry to add to the plethora of questions you have received. But thank you for taking the time to inform. OMG what a piece of kit, being used to Nikon I spent most of the night getting used to the handling of the camera, its so differnet to my D200/D90 the latter going straight on ebay as it was put to shame in about 2 minutes of me testing the video. I cannot wait to get out today and get some test shots and video. This thing is awsome. I too had a Sont V1E Video camera with 35mm adapter SGPro and many FD lenses and sold the lot for 4,000 Euros which has now enabled me to get the Mark ii with many extras like the 580EXII Flash and much more, with the small footprint and super low light capabilities its made my previous and bulky rig redundent in a flash, Yes I know its not a dedicated video camera but first impressions have blown away the look my Sony/SGPro rig offered with portabilty.

Got my 5DMKII but I got heavy “skew” issue’s… did you or can you post a work-method with all the steps? Read you convert the movies first to ProRes for example.. I just think the skew CAN be prevented but I just want to know how.
Also I shoot with a good old pentax lens (p-wire) with a converter ring. No autofocus/IS but… aperture and focus can both be done manually on the lens itself… it’s very handy!

I can deal with the fact that the camera is a prosumer model and the video capabilities are hobbled due to it’s low price but to find out there’s no manual control only when I actually have the thing in my hands is a bummer. I spent a good 30 min’s reading the manual and thinking I was doing something wrong before I thought to check here on the blog.
Granted, I may have missed the memo along the way but I’ve spoken to 4 other photogs just today that had no clue there was no manual capability with video on the 5D MK II.

Hi Jeff,
prores 422 works at a far higher bit rates (there is two settings I belive) than h.264, therefore needs less processor power to work with, but requires more access to hard drives as the files (and data rates) are much bigger.
Also apple (prores) say that generation to generation very little quality is lost which would be a concern of mine if I was editing in something as compressed as H.264.

I shoot 35mm; 16mm HD RED etc so this is an interesting new toy.
I am a little scared now on the fps issue but mainly no manual control…!!!!
This is crazy I know this is a stills camera that just happens to be shooting video but???
You seem to have a bit of influence with the CANON guys… is it a firmware thing or what?; If it is then cool but otherwise it seems like a big mistake.

I’m a news media photographer who has been using Canons for years for stills, I now have a 5DMKII and am trying to get my head around the video for my news outlets.
What video editing software do you recomend, bearing in mind my I need to compile, compress and ftp the vision (3-5 min worth) from my laptop at the news scene. I need software that will render the scenes without jitter, particularly when panning.

If we shot at night, the camera comes with compensation and we can get somethings like large apertures, but at the day light Ive only got something like f11 or f16. And I couldnt change it. Thought you might be interested in this. We wrapped last week and it goes to broadcast next month.
We did have a few with the camera in testing but we found that they all had work-arounds. It’s a great piece of kit if you’re happy to jump through a few hoops.

I’ve a 5D mk II too, and some images present bizarre “comportament” because the vertical capture scene, making the horizontal frame too inclined, like 20 or 30 degress, depending the speed of the movement.

Yes - unfortunately you DO have to trick the camera… it is not Aperture priority. I was led to believe (innocently - as there was very little information available at the time) that you would be able to do this - perhaps with the production camera - but it looks like there will be no true Aperture priority mode on the production camera at this point. It’s disappointing to say the least. Not real sure why Canon is not allowing true Aperture priority mode - all of the buttons/settings/menu items are in place. Forget 24p - Aperture priority (where you can set your aperture, and ISO) are much more important in my opinion.
