Behind The Scenes Video
Keep in mind – this is raw footage (not RAW) from both Canon XH A1 camcorder – and a few clips for the Canon EOS 5D MKII – you’ll see that the two are toe to toe (not really) on bright scenes… but in low light – the Canon EOS 5D MKII is impressive - but common sense leads me to state the following: if the Canon still camera team and the video team have come together to produce the Canon EOS 5D MKII – the next HD camcorder they come out with – may just floor us all… these are very exciting times – to be someone who focuses on “creating” as opposed to the “process” and “technique” of making your vision match the “reality” of the tools you have at your disposal. To view the main movie (not the behind-the-scenes), click here: REVERIE
See it in higher resolution on SmugMug!

Hi Vincent, thanks for all your hard work, I’m as excited as everyone else to actually try this camera out.
It seems my (oldish) computer is freaking out big time trying to play the film, any chance Canon (or Smugmug)can also host a smaller version? The “behind the scenes” video works fine and I could enjoy the (short!) 5D2 clips it featured.

Love this, great work!
The scene where you had the 5DII suction cupped to the outside of the SUV (to get the skid shot) is awesome. Looking at how grainy that scene is (shot on the XH-A1) vs how clean the results from the 5DII are – man, night and day difference.
Thanks for the behind the scenes! They are awesome and I always learn more from the behind the scenes shots.

The behind the scenes were very inspirational. Glad to see the list of lenses used on the main video, and would be quite interested to learn more about any techniques you may have used to overcome limitations with the camera.
I think you’ve created something ground-breaking with the advent of video in dSLR and will go down as being one of those who’ve shaken things up.
Also, being a longtime user of Smugmug (pro acct), it’s fantastic to see them be so generous in their support.
It’s photographers, companies, and groups such as these that have participated in your project that push the boundaries and make us all more inspired to learn, develop, and further our skills.
I believe many of us would love to see more of the technical side of things in future endeavors you may pursue (similar to what Chase Jarvis has been doing).

Andy, go to the dpreview.com forums. A lot of help there for your questions.
btw… this camera is second to only the canon 1ds series, the highest camera line in canon and it doesn’t have video yet.
Also, teh body is just the initial investiment, you will soon learn about L lens which are not cheap at all, atleast over 1K for the cheapest L.

For those of you who haven’t read Vincent’s article, “The Cloud is Falling,” do it now. What you’re witnessing with the 5D MkII videos is a perfect and direct example of what Vincent addresses in his writing. *Any* of you could have put this production together and generated this amount of publicity. True, not everyone has access to pre-production equipment (and as a Canon ambassador, Vincent is paid to represent Canon), but the idea is the same- use the tools you have available to create your own media, reach new audiences and perhaps reach new markets for your work.

Yes. You could use any digital camera. Take huge photos. Just think about the frame rate you want to use, and take that many photos for every second. Meaning, if you want 24fps, take 24 photos for every second of your film. Bring those stills into Final cut (or something similar) and have fun.
Reply
Thanks Citidon, The next question that I have is, I know that you can purchase the body with a lens, is this “kit” an appropriate investment, or, should I just purchase the body, and another separate lens?

Vincent,
I really enjoyed this piece and do think it’s just the opening salvo in things to come including a camcorder form factor camera that takes Canon 35mm glass.
I have preordered my 5D MKII.
After reading your blog, the comments, and watching the film and behind the scenes a few times I am wondering what a more realistic budget was.
I know you only layed out $5k USD (2k for da choppa) but if you calculated how much it was to rent all the gear you used I wonder how much more that figure would really be?
Certainly to own it would be huge. 50-100K? maybe?
I do think you can shoot a great movie for somewhere in the neighborhood of 5-10k with the 5D MKII!

Very nice. After viewing Reverie I wanted to see how you lit the scenes. Amazing that you used only one light in the “woman in a red dress” shots. Wow! No big light kit. Just one guy to hold a 2k was it? Also was really impressed that you used an LCD as a light source. Simply cannot believe how good this camera looks in low-light. Not like 500 people haven;t told you already, but nice job guys.

I’m surprised to see there are no vibration reduction devices on the camera mounted directly on the hood of the car. I would imagine that just by turning the engine on, the camera would shake like crazy. What about the helicopter shots? I shot, recently with a Vixia HF100 camcorder, inside a chopper and vibrations where really obvious.

hey, you guys need any help on any up coming projects please let me know. I can provide you help carrying your equipment if nothing else. Your teaser flick is awesome. You have talent. My dad is a Wedding photography up north in Toronto. I was completely awed watching that in full resolution. Now it makes me wonder if Canon is going to allow 2k or 4k cinema quality in there Mark IIII Ds versions in the mere future.

Stunning visuals, and from a still camera, cant wait for the chip to advance to a camcorder, But This video was edited in Final Cut, I have edited footage from the Canon Vixia HF11 AVCHD Camcorder and it had to be transcoded to Pro Res, Since Final Cut doesn’t edit native AVCHD. What was your workflow to get from card to edit.

[...] The Web was buzzing a couple of weeks ago when photographer Vincent LaForet spent a weekend making a short, wordless movie using an early Canon 5D Mark II. He hired a couple of models, grabbed a crew, rented a helicopter, pulled together $5,000, and made an absolutely astonishing-looking piece of video. It was hard to find the thing online—Vincent didn’t want to host it on his own site because of the massive bandwidth required to serve it. (Here’s his writeup, and here’s the “making of” video.) I know that the car-rig mount consists of the following:
Avenger F1000
Avenger F1100
Avenger D200
Manfrotto Magic Arm
The only part I can’t figure out is how Vince connects the outside suction cups to the center one. The two magic arms are attached to the main unit to give it extra support.
Anyone have any ideas what the center head unit is?

[...] Check out this behind the scenes video by Vincent Laforet and here’s a link to the final video. It was shot using a pre-production version of the Canon EOS 5D Mark II digital SLR – in a similar vein to the new Nikon D90. But for me, the question has to be why? Why do you need to have video on a high end DSLR? It cheapens the whole thing in my opinion. I mean if you shoot video, then you use a video camera right? And, if you’re a stills man (or woman), then you’d use a stills camera. I just don’t get it… [...]
