Behind The Scenes Video
Tuesday September 23rd 2008, 1:11 am
Filed under: Articles, Hardware, New Technology, Photo News, Photography

Keep in mind - this is raw footage (not RAW) from both Canon XH A1 camcorder - and a few clips for the Canon EOS 5D MKII - you’ll see that the two are toe to toe (not really) on bright scenes… but in low light - NO COMPARISON… so I’m not sure of how Canon feels about my trashing their top of the line XH A1 camcorder… but common sense leads me to state the following:  if the Canon still camera team and the video team have come together to produce the Canon EOS 5D MKII - the next HD camcorder they come out with - may just floor us all…  these are very exciting times - to be someone who focuses on “creating” as opposed to the “process” and “technique” of making your vision match the “reality” of the tools you have at your disposal. To view the main movie (not the behind-the-scenes), click here: REVERIE

I found it funny that when you were stopped on the street setting up the hood shots, tourists stopped and took pictures of you. I’m sure they had no idea who you were or what you were doing but they thought you must be important movie people or something.

Great video BTW.

Hi Vincent, thanks for all your hard work, I’m as excited as everyone else to actually try this camera out.

It seems my (oldish) computer is freaking out big time trying to play the film, any chance Canon (or Smugmug)can also host a smaller version? The “behind the scenes” video works fine and I could enjoy the (short!) 5D2 clips it featured.

Love this, great work!

The scene where you had the 5DII suction cupped to the outside of the SUV (to get the skid shot) is awesome. Looking at how grainy that scene is (shot on the XH-A1) vs how clean the results from the 5DII are - man, night and day difference.

Thanks for the behind the scenes! They are awesome and I always learn more from the behind the scenes shots. :-)

The behind the scenes were very inspirational. Glad to see the list of lenses used on the main video, and would be quite interested to learn more about any techniques you may have used to overcome limitations with the camera.

I think you’ve created something ground-breaking with the advent of video in dSLR and will go down as being one of those who’ve shaken things up.

Also, being a longtime user of Smugmug (pro acct), it’s fantastic to see them be so generous in their support.

It’s photographers, companies, and groups such as these that have participated in your project that push the boundaries and make us all more inspired to learn, develop, and further our skills.

I believe many of us would love to see more of the technical side of things in future endeavors you may pursue (similar to what Chase Jarvis has been doing).

Andy, go to the dpreview.com forums. A lot of help there for your questions.

btw… this camera is second to only the canon 1ds series, the highest camera line in canon and it doesn’t have video yet.

Also, teh body is just the initial investiment, you will soon learn about L lens which are not cheap at all, atleast over 1K for the cheapest L.

For those of you who haven’t read Vincent’s article, “The Cloud is Falling,” do it now. What you’re witnessing with the 5D MkII videos is a perfect and direct example of what Vincent addresses in his writing. *Any* of you could have put this production together and generated this amount of publicity. True, not everyone has access to pre-production equipment (and as a Canon ambassador, Vincent is paid to represent Canon), but the idea is the same- use the tools you have available to create your own media, reach new audiences and perhaps reach new markets for your work.

QUESTION FOR VINCENT:
Is it possible to create a video frame by frame with the MarkII, such as needed for animation work (e.g. claymation)?
Many thanks.

[Reply]

Josh Mehler Reply:

Yes. You could use any digital camera. Take huge photos. Just think about the frame rate you want to use, and take that many photos for every second. Meaning, if you want 24fps, take 24 photos for every second of your film. Bring those stills into Final cut (or something similar) and have fun. :)

Hey Vincent

Nice work!

i have two questions for you, One can not help notice how tack sharp the movie is. For the Scene in the movie where there is an empty chair, what was your aperture ? and did you have an aperture which you used more then anyother. The DOF is magical!

Second (or third) question is while shooting a movie, is it possible to vary the aperture ie go from 1.2 to 16 while the camera is recording. and if so is it possible to control this via a laptop wireless or wired

Thanks

Vincent,

I really enjoyed this piece and do think it’s just the opening salvo in things to come including a camcorder form factor camera that takes Canon 35mm glass.

I have preordered my 5D MKII.

After reading your blog, the comments, and watching the film and behind the scenes a few times I am wondering what a more realistic budget was.

I know you only layed out $5k USD (2k for da choppa) but if you calculated how much it was to rent all the gear you used I wonder how much more that figure would really be?

Certainly to own it would be huge. 50-100K? maybe?

I do think you can shoot a great movie for somewhere in the neighborhood of 5-10k with the 5D MKII!

Hey Vincent

Nice work!

i have two questions for you, One can not help notice how tack sharp the movie is.

Thanks

Chris

For those of you that were asking, here’s the music that was used:

Reverie: Extreme Ways
Reverie (Behind the Scenes): Horse & Carrot

Both songs are by Moby on the album: 18.

This just stinks with greatness!! :)

Love the little super-hero at the end — makes it feel like my house. ;)
