I just received confirmation from Canon: “barring any last minute technical difficulties” the video will be live within the next 12 hours… (I will link to it from this Blog)
SmugMug has stepped up to the plate as well - and they’ve agreed to host the “Behind The Scenes” video on their servers at no cost… so this site will remain advertising-free as a result (I don’t need to raise cash to pay for bandwidth as a result of their generous offer).
There is also a pretty incredible announcement coming up from them on this blog… within the next hour or so… One that almost trumps the release of this video in my opinion- an announcement that you all have a chance to benefit from…
If you choose to subscribe via RSS to this blog - you’ll be the first to hear of it and the release… my life has been on hold for almost a week - so I’m eager to get this out! We’ve gotten over 250,000 hits on this blog since Saturday - and the numbers just keep rolling in.
For now - enjoy this 12 second clip “teaser” of the behind the scenes video - to be launched simultaneously with the “Reverie” film…
WITHIN THE NEXT TWELVE HOURS…

The problem’s probably on my end, but I saw this announcement through your blog site — RSS still isn’t picking it up (for me, using Firefox in Wondows). Can’t wait for the next 60 minutes to pass…

Comment by ChrissyOne 09.22.08 @ 3:16 pmSorry, didn’t mean to come off as such a smart ass. I agree with you; it is _great_ that SmugMug has agreed to host the video in exchange for a plug here. But a plug is no less an advertisement than a banner is.
They’re not hosting it out of a sense of philanthropy; they’re driving customers to their site, and you’re able to serve your video without paying for bandwidth. Everybody wins. It’s still advertising ![]()

Vincent, did you get to see your short film projected at HD in a private screening room yet? If so how does it look? Also, have you had any film folks (DP’s, cameramen, editors etc) see this and make any comments about its quality compared to some of the pro HD cameras on the market?
I’m really hoping Canon include a real 24p mode for the 5D mark II. Cheers for your efforts in not only putting all of this together, but also in pushing Canon to share this as well.
Exciting times!

Comment by ChrissyOne 09.22.08 @ 3:44 pm“Really? No Ads” True - no worries - cool.
I think that the video being called a “fake” is a strange sort of compliment… brings a smile to my face to be honest… I have all of the RAW stuff here - so I have zero worries… things are moving very smoothly btw… the test site and video are already up…. just a matter of last minute testing… we’ve already gotten 104,000 people today so far since midnight… so I hope those servers hold up… I’m not too worried given that both SmugMug and Canon will host it on Akamai - they do all of Apple’s iTunes stuff… we should be in good hands.

Comment by Vincent Laforet 09.22.08 @ 3:45 pmI wouldn’t spend a second worrying about internet trolls… Seems the WWW is full of experts.
Thats why it’s really cool a true professional is posting their work. Still going to be plenty of nay sayers after it comes out, but it gives the “almost” sane people like me something to look at and aspire for, study, and enjoy.
I know all the negativity got to me over the last week… Went from buying a 50D to a 5D MK II to a refurbed 1d MK III, back to the 5D MK II. Finally decided to take a serious look at what I do, what I need and what I want. And stopped reading the boards (Or trying to… They seem to be a bad addiction.)
My 20D has served me well for 4 years, even surviving rain storms and snow with some duct tape (really lucky I think). I’m looking forward to an upgrade, and I hope the 5D MK II is it… At the very least I wouldn’t need the duct tape this winter.

Comment by Ronan 09.22.08 @ 3:55 pmBy the way, your enthusiasm for the camera is so evident that I went ahead and pre-ordered one yesterday, based only on your prediction that it would be back-ordered for a year. I’m not even planning to shoot video with it! So you’re a very effective advertiser for the 5DmkII whether you intend it or not.
Looking forward to the videos.

Comment by Really? No Ads? 09.22.08 @ 3:57 pmCan’t wait to see the video Vincent. Although the 5Dmk2 is out of my price range, it is the precursor for what will come to the lower end of Canon’s line in the future.
Also, props to Smugmug for offering their bandwidth. I’ve been a fan of them for a while now and have been using them for my photos.

Comment by Oliver 09.22.08 @ 4:06 pmWill the movie contain sharp moving images of Bigfoot? The suspense is killing me. I hope this isn’t another big hoax… the hype and ‘wait and see’ is getting suspicious. :^D
[Reply]
Comment by Buck Forester 09.22.08 @ 4:19 pmAs much as Smug Mug aren’t offering their services out of complete altruism it’s hard not to see that they’re as caught up in the enthusiasm and expectation surrounding this camera and this video as everyone else. Criticising them for trying to cash in on this opportunity seems churlish to me. I’ve never visited the Smug Mug site before, I still haven’t, but I appreciate their participation in the spirit it’s given.

You have actually piqued my interest in the 5D Mark II. I actually was disappointed with the 3.9FPS and was hoping that it would have been more in the 6FPS range of the 50D and the fact that Canon went with a new battery that didn’t match either the XXD line or the 1D line. If they felt the change was necessary, I would have like to see them make the 50D with the new battery as well….

Comment by Charles 09.22.08 @ 4:31 pmYeah, I’m with Buck. The hype has fizzled. As intense as the anticipation for this camera has been, it would have been better to keep quiet until it could actually be shown. No matter how cool this camera is, it can’t live up to the hype at this point. What could have been a “WOW” is now going to be a “that’s nice, but I can’t believe everyone got so stirred up.”
[Reply]
Comment by Jeremy 09.22.08 @ 4:35 pmIt’s funny how Mr. Reichmann can’t get his facts right: he writes “1080i” (instead of 1080p) and “47 Mbps” (instead of 38.6 Mpbps)…

I see 3 avenger pump cups; what I’m wondering is how many magic arms did you use for that contraption and what’s the part that secures the magic arms to the cup?
[Reply]
Comment by Cyril 09.22.08 @ 4:55 pm@ Buck and Jeremy,
I would cut Vincent a little more slack. First, he put up 5K of his own money to do this project with no backing or guarantee from Canon or anyone else, other than they agreed to let him borrow a Camera for 48 Hours.
Even if he posted this early to create a sensation in order to convince Canon or someone else to help him get this out to the public, I don’t see a problem with that. There is a definite interest in seeing what this camera can do, and by using a bottom - up, groundswell approach, Vincent will be able to get this out there. I think that the benefit of the doubt and some patience can be afforded to him.
It didn’t make any sense to compress the movie all the way down to YouTube size, or even the size of the sample videos that Canon posted, because then you wouldn’t be able to see what the quality actually is.
If the files are as large as they are supposed to be, then there are definite technological hurdles that need to be overcome. What good is it if you see a thumbnail sized video of something that may look stunning on your 52in HDTV.

In the 1st week of september they came out with some news in the forum about this dsmc, before canon univels the new 5D. After that their plans have completely changed whithin two weeks!!!
